Emergence is an incredible phenomenon. Sometimes, in science, some properties or behaviors of a system seem to appear out of thin air, as their not caused by any given component of the system.
A similar thing happens in human brains, and in nature, all around us.

Damn you're absolutely right. It seems like a lot of civilizations throughout history used many different systems (e.g. the Babylonians used the sexagesimal system, base 60!)

@@pointless_knowledge I would love to know why they did, it some cases it was simply from using fingers to track the count in different ways. Such as one hand to count and the other to track. Or using knuckles not whole fingers
