And once again another VN that I would love to play, but am unable to because I can't read Japanese. I wish the amount of English translated VN's would increase. I know that translating a VN takes a ton of time and that translators do it out of the good in their hearts, but still there are so many VN's that look interesting and yet unplayable for people (like me) who can't read Japanese.
It takes 2 or 3 years to become familiar with the language. It takes a longer time to understand Kanji. If you have a note book you can practice writing Hiragana and Katakana. You have diagrams and charts online. It gets frustrating or daunting some of the time. It's useful for playing a lot of Japanese only exclusives.
Cordan Hudyma I'd say that by now I'm pretty familiar with the (spoken) language. I've been watching anime for a long time now and I've read a few VN's too and I've reached the point where I can mostly understand spoken sentences without subtitles and can notice it when subtitles don't match up with wat the characters are actually saying. Meaning I should be able to watch a few anime episodes without subs and be able to understand what happened/what the episode was about, however when it comes to reading and writing I have absolutely no clue. I know that Japanese written language is very complicated (and even Japanese students themselves struggle with Kanji sometimes) and I don't really have the time to start learning a whole new language on my own. I might try and take classes or follow a course or something in the future, but for now it's pretty much impossible for me to be able to read Japanese (let alone an entire VN). That's why I think it's such a shame that only such a small percentage of the VN's get translated. Why don't the companies that make them try and translate/sell them in the west as well? That would increase the amount of English VN's and at the same time decrease the amount of time it takes for a VN to be translated. Also it would make them some money as that would mean that most fan translators would have no more reason to go trough all that trouble and that people who are interested can just buy the official english VN's themselves (instead of having to play illegal patches/fan translations for which they don't get any money at all). I would definately pay for whatever looks interesting enough.
Ohtori Sakuya It's very unfortunate. I personally have a lot f free time. I'm able to study language or spend time gardening. There are a lot of Eroge/VN that I really enjoy. A lot of them have spectacular CG and brilliant writing. It's a really unique art form. It's a shame Eroge/VN are not more popular. It would see a wider release and have more fluent sounding translations. You could even possibly have English voice acting. I personally enjoy the Japanese voice actresses. The voice works are very emotional and well flushed out. There are also a few Japanese writers I like for an example Kobe Abe. There are English translation of his books by the way like. "The Woman in the Dunes" The Japanese people who work for some of the VN companies seem really nice too. Kanji can be really hard to remember, though. You have stuff like Rikaichan for Firefox and Chrome too. It can help out a lot for Japanese websites.
This is a year ago lol but i'll answer anyways. You don't need more than 2 3 years to understand the language, i've barely been studying about a year, and i'm already reading manga VN and videogames, ofc i can't read them perfectly, but i already know +1000 kanji, around 5000 words with them, and i can understand a lot when i've been only studying kanji everyday around 7 months and some people go a lot faster than me, so don't think that you need +3 years to be able to read, if you try it you can go a lot faster! :D
Ohtori Sakuya we both think the same about that, even more I've watched subbed anime ever since I was 8 years old which means 10 years ago, and I can also understand unsubbed anime but since I have almost no way to learn japanese writing I can barely read 20 kanjis
