    Something Dan didn’t mention is Damien Leone and Phil Falcone are the only IP owners of Terrifier and Art The Clown. They declined to sell the rights to any distributor as all the usual distributors tried to negotiate with them but wanted ownership. A work colleague was off last week, and he went to see Joker 2 on his birthday. He's the most placid, easygoing guy I know - but he told us he left the cinema angry; angry at how bad it was as a sequel, angry at the story, angry that it wasn't even marketed as a musical, which it clearly is in part. If Joker 2 can anger and disappoint a guy like That, it's no wonder its box office take has fallen off a cliff in just 2 weeks - the word is out that it's an insultingly bad cash-grab stinker.

    26:41 I think the reason why there was inaccuracies to the theater count for Look Back was because of how GKIDS rolled out the film: it opened in 2 theaters on the 4th, but they also did wide special event screenings for it on the 6th and 7th, so for the overwhelming majority of the 535 theaters it played in last week/weekend, it was only for two days (only one of which was counted towards the weekend total) and only had one showtime per day in most of those theaters as well.

    They gave Todd everything he wanted and he destroyed a Billion Dollar franchise

    I'm really confused about Joker 2. I don't know if I should champion daring films, subverting expectations or to rubbish films for not appealing to an audience. It is art.... but it is a business...

    • @bened22
      @bened22 3 месяца назад +3

      Yeah, such films really challenge the simple narratives around box office. If it was a hit people would say: "See, the audience rewards something daring!" People have trouble admitting to themselfes that nobody really knows what will sell at the box office. Yet the reaction is always: "Well, obviously..."

    • @Malt454
      @Malt454 3 месяца назад +2

      Yes, the "fans know what's good/sells" narrative is just burnt out for me. Given the reaction for both Joker and Furiosa, it could just be that the real target audiences for those films don't go to the theater as quickly anymore, so they just wait for streaming and it becomes a self-fulling prophecy in terms of box office - just as the alternative versions of those sequels that would have been "successful" would have had little or no appeal to those streaming audiences because they would have been so safe and mediocre. In the larger sense, I don't know why I should care about the overall health of an industry that just serves mental pablum because it's safe and profitable when it's nothing that I want to see anyway and, over time, theaters have become expensive zoos that even the staff can't control - and the industry didn't make it that way... the "fans" did.
      The point that the numbers prove whatever someone wants them to prove is well taken; for me, they've always shown that there's no correlation between box office and film quality.

    I spent my movie money on Saturday Night, and this movie was directly targeted at me as I am a lifelong SNL fan who has been watching since the seventies.
    I can tell you that for someone like me, the film was very moving, especially the crescendo-like ending; however, for non-SNL fans, I just have hard time believing that they would get much out of it.

    The fact that Joker 2 was ALLOWED to be made the way it was with that big of a budget is ludicrous! I know they won't but, I really hope that Hollywood learns their lesson at some point in the near future that pissing off fans because they "aren't the right kind" is beyond stupid!

    It's so weird seeing people framing Terrifier and Joker as indie vs Hollywood. The only thing Hollywood about Joker is the budget, it's an indie in every other way. It's a court room drama/musical about a comic book character with Lady Gaga that is super depressing. There is nothing Hollywood about that. And as I understand it, Phillips and Phoenix had total creative control. I do not think it's a result of the Hollywood assembly line.
    And the fact that Joker failed is exactly why movies like Terrifier don't get funding from Hollywood. Sinking a lot of money into a production that is a weird, creative, and personal vision from a filmmaker is a huge gamble that it will flop. And if Hollywood did up the budget, then Terrifier would be in the exact same position the Joker is in.
    I am super happy for Terrifier, but I think it's lightning in a bottle. It's not a template that can predictably be copied.

    I'm not sure I'd describe Joker 2 as a risk, at least not without hindsight. It's a sequel to a billion dollar movie, starring one of the most acclaimed actors of his generation and one of the most famous singers of her generation, directed by the person who helmed said billion dollar prequel. That makes it look more like a sure thing, and - I assume - the reason the high budget was approved.

    I believe The Fall Guy is based on a television show from the 70s or 80s. This is with regard to the "Non-sequel/remake gross" graphic. I don't think the show is the most well-known thing, but it might matter to you, so I figured I'd mention it.

    My take on the Joker 2 flop is the result of mass miscommunication and gross misunderstanding on the studio and audience end. The original Joker by Todd Philips was never pitched as a superhero genre film, it was a somber ‘art house’ reimagining of the Joker character. The film overperformed with critics, at the box office and during the awards season, signaling to the studios that a more highbrow, genre subverting superhero flick could sell well. Naturally this led to the greenlighting of the sequel film, if you look at the films themselves it is a natural progression of the original film narratively and even thematically. It makes sense for them to make this movie not out of spite, in the studio or Todd Philips’ end, but because they saw the success of the first film. Now the misunderstanding comes in that they didn’t realize that what the majority of the audience enjoyed about the original wasn’t that it was a highbrow art film but because of the still remaining conventional superhero fair, and the fact that it was done with realism, grit and hyper violence. The majority of the audience mistook Todd’s intentions and major takeaways of the original film, resulting in a wildly differing of expectations. I don’t buy the takes that Todd was intentionally trying to piss off its core fan base, not that Warner wanted to take this risk. Simply that Joker was seen as a highbrow genre subversion on the creators side, and a hyper stylized superhero flick on the fandom’s side. Leading to the failure of this sequel critically and monetarily.
