Clarification on the Wicked question: a prequel would fall into the same category as a sequel for the purposes of the chart. The basic idea is to figure out whether the movie should be considered a prequel/sequel/remake, which would make it ineligible, or an adaptation separate from The Wizard of Oz movie, which would make it eligible.

If Wicked actually launches a proper franchise, Wizard of Oz should definitely be a part of the group. No separation in my opinion. The themes and characters are all the same.

Wicked is a prequel. You’ll have plenty of chart possibilities, nonetheless. Musicals, anything “Oz,” Part 1s of multi part movies, Thanksgiving week openings come to mind.

Plenty of average to bad superhero movies did really well in the 2010s (suicide squad, amazing spiderman 2, Thor the dark world, venom 1 all made around $700m). I think genre has lost much of the must-see, fear of missing out appeal with the general audiance . People will now only turn up when it is a must -see event that gets great reaction (like deadpool and wolverene).
It makes me wonder whilst Superman and Fantastic 4 could do well, Captian America, brave new world, could flop if it is seen as wait for streaming or skip it movie like the Marvels..

If the box office for 'Captain Marvel' hadn't been inflated by its proximity to the last two 'Avengers' films the drop wouldn't have been as drastic and 'Joker 2' would be at its rightful spot.

Hi Dan, got an idea for a boxoffice/video maybe. Boxoffice sabotage. Myth or reality? Example: Just recently watched The Swan Princess again w my daughter on Netflix. Wasnt really a part of my childhood but overall not a bad movie. Looked very Disney-like but not quite there. Looked into the history and feud of ex-Disney employees creating their own studio etc. Boxoffice wise this was a huge bomb. 1994 was a busy year overall but some suspect foul play by Disney by re-releasing The Lion King in November after the first release ended in september. The Swan Princess was released, you guessed it, in November 1994. Coincidence? Would live love your take on this. When I read it I immediately thought of you and that it might make a fun section or video? Are their more of these release sabotages, maybe other famous box office battles? Regards Raf

technically Wicked is NEITHER a sequel nor a remake of the Wizard of Oz, it's actually like a PREQUEL which I know is splitting hairs but given that it's based on the mega successful Broadway musical (which I have actually seen several times because I work on Broadway) which is based on a novel that expands on the lore of the Wizard of Oz so therefore that novel is based on the original novel that the original Wizard of Oz movie is based on. All this to say the answer to your question is no this new Wicked movie is not a sequel or a remake of the Wizard of Oz because the events of the movie take place before Dorothy lands in Oz making it a prequel but should also not be on your original films chart because even though it is a "new take" on the Wizard of Oz that most people who have never seen the Broadway musical will be introduced to for the first time it is still based on a property that's been around for like a hundred years
also they literally sell the novel the Wicked Broadway musical is based on at the show's merchandise stand at the theater /so that's a dead giveaway that it's not a wholly "original" concept

I'm aware of Wicked being an adaptation of a novel and that it's a prequel to the original L. Frank Baum story. My main question is how it should be regarded in relation to the movie The Wizard of Oz? Should it count as something that is not a prequel/sequel/remake of the original film, or should it be regarded as one? You can make a case either way. It's a very borderline case, which is why I opened it up to the audience.

@@DanMurrellMovies I would say yes it should be considered in the WOO universe. Kinda like how the various movies in the Marvel universe count. It's a prequel/ Elphaba origin story... Hope that helps...

The members polls were kinda weird. Wicked is not a remake or prequel to The Wizard Of Oz. It is actually based on the broadway show that Idina Menzel starred in and was a Tony-award winning musical.
Fun Fact: According to Wikipedia, Wicked is a loose adaptation of the 1995 book, Wicked: The Life And Times of the Wicked Witch Of The West, by Gregory Macguire, which that book is based on both the L. Frank Baum novel and the iconic 1939 film adaptation of The Wizard of Oz.
To me, Trap is basically a suspense thriller movie because M. Night Shyamalan is no stranger to plot twists. There’s nothing horror, no blood, no gore, just a straight up suspense movie.

Thanks Dan, here in Australia voting is a happy tradition with many election day traditions, like grabbing a bbq sausage and onions, or supporting the local school by buying some raffle tickets! I actually think voting is quite fun provided you have time (and the line isn't too long) and know who you want to vote for. Plus in Australia most people are really nice and you can have interesting conversations with people whilst waiting in line!

I recognize the font on your t-shirt. (whip-crack)
"The Wizard of Oz" is itself an adaptation of a novel, so if the Judy Garland classic would qualify for a "non-sequel/prequel/remake" list, then so would "Wicked" since it's an adaptation of a Broadway musical which was inspired by the same novel--not necessarily the 1939 film. Perhaps to truly eliminate all doubt and protest regarding a list such as this, make it "original screenplay only" movies. Not adaptations of any source material and not dramatizations of real people or real events. That would make "Bob Marley: One Love", "The Fall Guy" and "It Ends with Us" ineligible, and make room for three more films that are truly original.

    • @marylincherie1806

the musical is an adaptation of the book Wicked. The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West which itself is inspired by the Wizard of Oz book and movie.
I like the original screenplay version but the movies that leave the chart than should not be totally forgotten.

I don’t have to worry about competition for the next few weeks because despite its somewhat disappointing opening but promising worldwide numbers, I think Venom 3 will be just fine. There’s not going to be any competition until November 22 when Gladiator II and Wicked releases and then Moana II on the 27th (Pre-Thanksgiving).

I'm noticing a trend with these series movies:
When the preceding movie was good, the box office is higher, even when the movie in question is awful.
When the preceding movie was bad, the box office is lower, even when the movie in question is amazing.
    I think that's what we're seeing with Venom 3.
People liked Venom, so Let There Be Carnage did very well, but it was also pretty bad, so The Last Dance is suffering
Clearly there are more factors than that, but it's a trend I noticed with X-Men films, and I'm seeing it also in the Spider films

Conclave is attracting a much older crowd who very rarely goes to the theaters. Could have strong legs so long as spoilers about the ending don’t scare too many people away. My parents are excited to go see Conclave, and I think Oppenheimer was the only time they went to the theaters last year.
