Having seen The Rise of Skywalker, we took these prequels for granted didn't we? I love this scene so much.. Ian Mcdiarmid's delivery on 'Rise' is impeccably sinister.
I read somewhere that he used an ancien technique the Japanese used to basically force air from the stomach out your throath and by doing that it makes your voice pitch resonate and lower than just using the vocal cords. You can clearly hear it when he says. Henceforth you shall be known as Darth Vader. He camed up with his voice on his own, no one told him how sidious should sound in Return and the prequels. Cheers mate!
How can I take an absolute monstrously awful scene like this for granted? Snippets like this get worse every time I see them. The more I try to give the prequels a chance the further they drop in quality.
@1Yan00 the most straightforward description would be "wooden acting". And like... Possibly one of THE worst examples of wooden acting I've ever seen. The whole scene is the most embarrassing display of awkwardness it's really hard to watch.
He was still Anakin Skywalker when he said I will pledge myself to your teaching...then Palpy said...GOOD! THE FORCE IS STRONG WITH YOU ..A POWERFUL SITH YOU WILL BECOME...HENCEFORTH YOU SHALL BE KNOWN AS...HMMM DARTH....VAYDAAAH!
And then when Anakin leaves the room, Sidious claps his hands in excitement as he mutters *'fuck yes'* for finally getting the Chosen One to embrace the Dark Side
"I cannot believe that that actually worked. I literally told him that I didn't actually know how to do the force trick to save padme and he stayed anyway. What an idiot. This will be great!"
Darth sidious plays the role of puppet master so well. The fact he was controlling every outcome of the war and still was able to hide in plain sight is incredible, AND was able to turn one of the strongest Jedi at the time to the dark side
The moment Palpatine said " Darth... Vader" Anakin's whole demeanor changed.. before there was still a glimmer of hope in his eyes... but after he received his Sith name that hope was replaced by hatred... almost as if he knew he wanted to kill his master from that moment onward. Saying that George Lucas was a visionary is a massive understatement.
I think it's more shame than anything. Anakin never wanted to be a Sith. He wanted to save his wife and stop the constant war going on around him. Him hearing this man who he knew was bad promise him all these things while also knowing what he'd have to do would make anyone shameful they were about to do them for what they wanted. Literally like a deal with the devil.
@chrisyoung5549 The culmination of Anakin's story is that he was born a slave and lived his entire life as a slave until his last act of redemption by killing Palpatine, at which point Anakin died as a free man.
I think we have to appreciate the acting of Hayden Christensen here, how lost, desperately lost he looks, and how his facial expression turns to a complete cold stone expression. Also I would like Obi-Wan had sensed Anakin's fall as well, it supposed that their bond is really strong.
I don’t think Obi-Wan ever sensed Anakin’s fall because he was too busy fighting on Utapau after Grievous’ death. So, Ahsoka and Yoda are the only ones that sense Anakin’s fall but weren’t really sure of what happened
@@haydo-9916 He hadn't. Only when he searched the records to find out the truth, it was implied that he had a feeling that something had happened to Anakin.
I love this scene. You can see Palpatine trying his hardest to keep up this "noble politician/caring father figure" role as he turns anakin to the dark side. But his true evil motives and intent keep revealing itself in certain things he says or how he says certain words.
@@josend that was exactly one of the moments I was referring to in my original comment. "We will catch them off balance". The way he says that is so sinister 😂

@@Silverswitch1 That is not correct. Darth Nihilus was not the dark side. He was not the light side. He was the antithesis to the force itself. In the end he was not even a human, or even a husk. He was a force of nature, no a force AGAINST nature.

In the end, nihlas lost his body as a whole body and there was basically nothing behind that mask
What’s really terrifying is that Anakin didn’t question the fact that Palpatine magically knew the exact location of the Separatist leaders. He just heard “Go kill them” and followed orders, desperate to save Padme without realizing that Palpatine would have no way of knowing that information if he was purely on the side of the Republic.
I mean, he did reveal that he was the with lord that they had been looking for moments before this scene. So it would’ve been obvious to him now that he’d been playing both sides of the field.
Fr even Palpatine said so to Yoda. Although I’d argue that while physically he got fucked, on the side of the force aspect, he grew stronger than ever.
I love the dynamic of Sith Lords and the Rule of Two that plays out here. When Anakin pledges his service, anyone can see that he only intends to serve Palpatine as long as it suits his own goals, and that he’s fully willing to betray Palpatine if need be. Palpatine knows this, and he, likewise, though drawn to Anakin for his potential and power, really only wants to use it for his own gain. Both know that a time will come when betrayal takes place, and both fully intend to be ready so as to kill the other when that happens. It’s such a magnificent story having people that have fed their greed and wrath and taken in all they can to the point of becoming a violent, treacherous storm- and then how they work with others in order to survive and, ultimately, conquer. The Jedi manage the instability of being force-sensitive by mastering themselves. The Sith indulge it and satisfy themselves only when exerting brutal tyranny over things outside themselves.
Just imagine if Vader hadn't end up mutilated as he did. If Padme died and a fully healthy Vader learned of this, Palps would've been gone in the blink of an eye
I like how despite Palpatine's arrogance and despite the fact that he killed a few great Jedi, including Mace, one of the best Jedi of all time, and recruited Anakin, who's force potential is astounding and can potentially be the greatest force user of all time, he still admits that the Jedi would kill both of them if they found out what was going on. He definitely shows his fear when he says "We must move quickly...the Jedi are relentless...". I love that detail. The Jedi are more than a match for both of them, even if they both wield great power.
He was arrogant but he was extremely smart. The smartest pick their battles wisely. There's a reason he played all sides of the fence lol he outsmarted the entire galaxy. Evil man, true politician 🤣
@@Crying_dogyou can't convince me that Palpatine wasn't sandbagging in that fight since he sensed that Anakin was on his way to the Chancellor's office and he wanted to be in a vulnerable position by the time Anakin got there
I wouldn’t say he was scared when he said “We must move quickly” I think that’s just him trying to put peer pressure on Anakin and fearing him into killing the Jedi at the temple as soon as possible despite Anakin being conflicted.
@@Gage_Brumleypalpatine was definitely faking. It was all part of the plan to appear weak and fragile to further manipulate anikan. Though he did lose to mace fair and square according to George Lucas.
Ian McDiarmid is incredible here. His emotional embellishment and revelry in his role as the embodiment of the dark side is phenomenal. I love the way he delivers the last time. He’s so fun to watch as Sidious.
“Because the council does not trust you my young apprentice, I believe you are the only Jedi with no knowledge of this part. And when the Jedi learn what has transpired here they will kill us. Along with all the senators.” He nailed that line and his final line without the hood on 😮
Palpatine was a good man and had a good heart. He said he wants peace. The corrupt Jedi dragged out that war and were responsible for the violence. They shouldn't have tried to overthrow him.
I don't agree with that professional. If you read the EU he like all sith are wicked to the core and manipulative liars. Wait till you see how evil Valkorion from SWTOR is. ((He's also way stronger than Dark Empire Palpatine))
I think part of what's disturbing is that this thing, this creature, who has always looked this disgusting and evil and hid his face with the Dark Side, was there the whole time, smiling, encouraging, gently pushing him towards this choice. Anakin was a slave to Watto, then to the Jedi and their teachings to a certain extent, and then even more so to Sidious. Only when his son shows faith in him is he given a true choice. His decision to save his son is not prompted by dogma or manipulation or indentured servitude but by genuine love and remorse. That is what is frightening about this. Sidious is the hideous monster under your bed but was your friend for years and ultimately desires for nothing more than for Anakin to become uglier than him and replace him as the Emperor by murdering him. He took a vulnerable, insecure, confused boy and molded him into an unrecognizable evil. This is why "you were the chosen one" hits so hard. He was. He was the chosen one, but now, in this evil state, is not. Only when given a true choice to make by Luke, to let him die and remain Vader or save him, knowing it would mean his death, is Anakin finally freed from his enslavement.
He was always the chosen one He destroyed both the Jedi and sith orders essentially wiping the slate clean He brought balance to the force by eliminating all established order to bring a new age. That is what the prophecy said. It never said how exactly he was going to do it. The Jedi didn’t have an understanding of what BALANCE was. The Jedi were in control and dominated the force for the last 1000 years believing the sith were extinct. The sith were basically exiled and forced to operate in secret because the Jedi dominated. How nobody understood that balancing the force would mean that their entire order would have to be destroyed is beyond me. Anakin always was a gifted user of the dark side of the force, however he was never destined to be the most powerful Sith Lord ever like he would have eventually became if he didn’t get injured. His destiny was to balance out both orders while experiencing both orders for himself. The only real force user after anakin fulfilled his destiny at the time of his death was Luke, which gave the light side a slight advantage in regards to both sides rebuilding. The one light side user remaining is symbolic for the way the force reacted to when plageus tried to manipulate the force further to the dark side and the force itself rejecting him and moving away from the dark in response. He brought balance by destroying both sides which neutralized everything while having only 1 light side user due to the forces rejection of plageus’ efforts
@@satan899 The main task of the Chosen One was to destroy the Sith, whose poisoning of the Force was the main source of imbalance. Lucas has Obi-Wan straight out state this in Episode III, during the conversation with Mace and Yoda in the transport. And yes, Lucas also stated that Anakin stays the Chosen One even when he’s Vader, but in the sense that his true self never completely died, he was always there inside the black suit, and could be awakened by Luke in the end. That true self was the Chosen One, not the monster that Sidious made out of him. As for the Jedi, their survival and the chance they were given to begin anew has nothing to do with Plagueis. The Jedi at their best act in harmony with the balance of the Force, they’re not a threat to it; which means that, unlike the Sith, they weren’t destroyed, but simply given a reprimand and allowed to see the error of their ways, so they could make up for them. Really, I think people give way too much importance to Plagueis, when his “tragedy”, as far as the movies are concerned, could very well be just a gigantic load of bullshit that Sidious made up to further corrupt Anakin.
@@rickblaine9670 the force was out of balance before the events of episode 1. The arrogance and hubris of the Jedi were just as much of an unbalancing to the force as the sith were. 0:44 I love this part because Anakin basically got cat fished into thinking Palpatine knew how to cheat death, but Palpatine saying he doesn't really know. Anakin's expressions are saying: "Are you F-ing kidding me?! I just betrayed Mace Windu for you! Oh well, no going back now"
His full change to the dark side isn't really justified. Stopping Windu from killing Palpatine out of desperation to save Padme is one thing, but blindly devoting himself to Palpatine after he was ready to kill him earlier? And Palpatine doesn't even prove he knows how to save Padme. He's like "I believe we can find the secret". That's not much of a sales pitch, and Anakin looks like a gullible idiot for commiting to everything Palpatine tells him to do: including killing younglings? I thought Anakin was stubborn and headstrong? Now he entirely throws his Jedi training and principles out of the way without question? The Anakin/Vader shift never worked. The prequels are bad.
@@drobinson-uo7ic I agree about how abrupt it is But you can say that's part of the intense drama Like these things happened seemingly in an instant without time for reflection Also remember The Force is a spiritual thing, my thinking is that like, once you betray the Jedi and knowing assist a Sith Lord, it starts to corrupt or alter you irrevocably. That was the vibe I got in this scene, where it was like this "aura" emanating out of Sidious was surrounding and reforging Anakin. Almost not even a conscious decision Anakin makes, it just happens. @@drobinson-uo7ic There not bad at all they are very good, and compared to subversive sabagoting sequel trilogy garbage they are downright masterfull, what your referring to however is a relevant criticism and something the prequels needed more time to tell and to properly show the relationship building between Anakin and palpatine over the years-as well as the subtle manipulation tactics masquerading as advice/false virtue/false caring/and etc which likely needed way more screen time to show more thoroughly and adequately, because yeah the transition here from i'm a Jedi and i'm good, to then just betraying and even murdering Mace Windu who he had just revealed Sidious identity to no less!, and then straight to just full on blind unconditional devotion and obedience to Palpatine is definitely portrayed as quite sudden and drastic in its portrayal in this movie no question on that front.I guess or understand that the clone wars show- which I never saw myself but many like and I understand is quite good if ones into that sort of thing- helps fill in those gaps to help make this scene here from ROTS not seem so forced/rushed/drastic/sudden. However you'd and others would likely respond to that argument by saying something along the lines of- "Well sure I get that fair enough, but!! you shouldn't need an animated clone wars entire frickin tv series spanning several seasons/episodes years after the movies were made and released just to help this scene make more sense and be more justified and feel more earned/natural pace and etc wise."- And on that note, you'd be correct. That being said, just because this scene here in its original released format/context and etc is drastic and Anakin's change is arguably/pretty much to fast and arguably a bit forced even you could also definitely argue, does not mean that the series overall isn't good or even great, it absolutely is I think anyways, and especially when compared to the modern day subversive agenda ridden garbage crap show sequels and all ya know. Even if I didn't rate them by todays nonsense pc/social justice/diversity hire quota/ LGBTQRS/Feminists/ Ideological subversion/ agenda over merit/creativity and even maximum profits/ideological subversion bs- even if I rated the prequels without that in mind i'd still rate Phantom menace as a solid B, The Attack of the clones a eh solid B-, and Revenge of the sith a solid B+ , but if you also judge/rate then in the context of back then and also accounting for the shit subversive nonsensical era were in now they are even higher rated.
Ian McDiarmid is known for his campy acting but at 2:07 he deepens his voice and plays it subdued. Not only does it show agility within the performance, it adds depth to Palpatine. His voice, his demeanour, his intentions are buried and hidden away and only for a brief moment do we see the real Palpatine.
The prequels often get slated but this part is absolute perfection, palpatine is the complete personification of evil, I can’t image how McDermott’s performance, the voice and makeup and storyline around this part could have been done better, has to be one of the greatest scenes of the whole saga
(Subtitles) "Only then will you become strong enough with the dark side to save Batman." I did not expect that and that made me laugh so hard I nearly fell out of my chair crying.
2:57 Anakin literally walks from the light, into the dark, becoming a literal shadow, much like the shadow standing* before him. standing, THEN seated.
"Become my apprentice! Learn to use the Dark Side of the Force!" "But, you're the Sith we've been looking for, the one controlling Dooku and Maul, the one controlling both sides in the war to achieve dictatorial control?" "Sure." "So that means you're responsible for me losing a hand, and for the assassination attempts on my wife, who I love SO MUCH. You're also responsible for that nice Qui-Gon guy being killed, not to mention countless other deaths." "If you put it like that ..." "And now you're telling me that you don't know how to cheat death after all, and you're stringing me along with some nebulous possibility of 'if' we work together we 'may' be able to discover it, after I literally just cut off Windu's hand for you to murder him?" "Ok, that sounds bad, I admit." "So what do you want me to do anyway?" "Oh, go to the Jedi Temple, murder all your friends, even the small children, destroy your order and help me bring about an authoritarian Empire under my control by going to the Separatists and murdering all them too." "Yeah ok. Back in a bit."

I like how Palpatine’s voice sounds like a mixture of several voices here. Like it’s not just his voice but also the voices of Plagueis, Tenebrous and all the other Sith who came before.
The moment Palpatine puts the cape over his face in this scene is when he in my opinion officially transforms to emperor. He becomes unrecognizable after that.
Never noticed the voice change with Palpatine when he puts his cloak on. Granted his vocal cords were just fried, and it could be said that he was channeling the dark side while sensing the emotions Anakin was feeling ,which you could see brought him great pleasure that he orchestrated all of this and had Anakin right where he wanted him, glorifying at what he knew Vader could be. But either way that voice change is spooky stuff. Like the hood signified with the dark side somehow hides/ masks how he sounds. Thinking of it differently like that definitely casts new depths into Sidious’ character.

He was always the chosen one
He destroyed both the Jedi and sith orders essentially wiping the slate clean
He brought balance to the force by eliminating all established order to bring a new age.

It's because that's how he always looked he just used a sith technique to change his appearance and it was broken when Windu blasted his lighting back at him
@VanguardPlays bingo or at least that's how I always took Palp's appearance.
@@vanguardplays3418 hmmm I mean who would give a damn about how they look,
while holding tremendous amount of Dark Side power and being the most powerful Sith in the galaxy.
If Darth Malgus has proven anything the Sith are not all that invested in appearances
Yea that's why I question the theory that he allowed Mace Windu to win to tempt Anakin
I mean... idk. It feels like he was genuinely getting his ass handed to him really, it's a big sacrifice for his body to get all drained and withered like that
Imagine if palpatine actually said: every single Jedi including your friend obi wan kenobi and your padawan ahsoka tano is now an enemy of the republic. That would have made this scene more epic and made anakin think a little bit more about what he was doing
Although Ashoka would not have been mentioned as she wasn't written yet. But mentioning those Jedi which Anakin genuinely care about would carry the same weight nonetheless
@@teleportedbreadfor3days true
@@teleportedbreadfor3days she could actually because they mentioned the clone wars when a new hope released and people didn’t even understand what it was
@@kenobi2079 I think the Clone Wars being mentioned in A New Hope might be different case, especially since it was written in as a mention to show that the Star Wars universe went beyond what the movies showed. In fact, the original concept of the Clone Wars was that the Clones were the antagonists of a war *against* the Republic.
@@teleportedbreadfor3days interesting, but then again I just said that it would be something very cool to see if he actually mentioned her would have made the scene more epic, but I still liked it the way it came out
3:06 with the subtitles on "only then will you be strong enough with the dark side to save batman" haha
The prequels may be the most underrated movies of all time. So ahead of their time.
Im willing to bet money that no one disagrees with me when i say, 1:11 through 1:41 is the coldest 30 seconds of non combative star wars scenery ever produced.
In my opinion darth sidious is a greater villain than darth vader. His plan throughtout the clone wars was just magnificent.
2:16
When Anakin says thank u my master u can see that one side of his face is dark and the other is light.....a powerful moment
I like how Palpatine’s voice sounds like a mixture of several voices here. Like it’s not just his voice but also the voices of Plagueis, Tenebrous and all the other Sith who came before.
This is actually a legendary scene, love Palpatine's lines in this
The moment Palpatine puts the cape over his face in this scene is when he in my opinion officially transforms to emperor.
I always thought it was interesting how the echo in his voice stopped once he put his cloak on. This seems like a good explanation.
@@Faren_I liked his evil devil voice more better than his default emperor voice :(
I love how after the foreplay of the previous scenes were over and everyone having accepted their roles, Palpatine and Vader just fall into a comfortable conspiring tone together.
This entire scene was great! Well done by both Hayden and Ian. I always loved The Emperors voice here (Ian's voice was actually deepened) I loved the line, "The Force is strong with you."
"Only then you will be strong enough to to save batman" - subtitles 😂
BATMAN
LMAO
Such an amazing scene and yet another great acting performance by Ian McDiarmid.
Sidious definitely got his vocal cords shocked. He sounds like a chronic Death Stick Smoker. lol
You don't want to sell me death sticks. You want to go home and rethink your life.
I imagine the Emperor has a notebook of all the Sith names he wants to use.
This is how he can come up with these names on the spot 😂
George Lucas: What have I done?
Disney: You're fulfilling your destiny, George. Sell us your company, learn to use the dark side of the movie industry.
George: I will do whatever you, ask........
Disney: GOOOOOOOOOODDDDD...
George: Just help me save Star Wars life, I can't live without it.
Disney: To cheat the destruction of a franchise is a power only one has achieved, but if we work together, I know we can discover the secret.
George: I pledge myself, to your teachings.
Disney: Good, Gooooood, the sellout is strong with you! A powerful billionaire you will become. Henceforth! You shall be known as, Darth Valuable!
George: Thank you, my master.
Disney: Rise
Disney: Because the fans did not trust you, my young apprentice, I believe you are the only director with no knowledge of this plot. When the expanded universe fans find out what had transpired here, they will kill us, along with all the Disney staff.
George: I agree, the EU fans next move will be against Disney.
Disney: Every single storyline, including your favorite, the story of Admiral Thrawn, is now an enemy of the Star Wars universe.
George: I understand master
Disney: We must move quickly, the EU storylines are relentless. If they are not all destroyed, it will be unlimited sequels without end.
Disney: First, I want you to go to Lucasfilm Studios, we will catch them off balance. Do what must be done, George Lucas! Do not hesitate, show no mercy! Only then will you be strong enough to save Star Wars.
George: What about the other storylines spread across the world?
Disney: Those storylines will be dealt with. After you have fired all the employees at Lucasfilm, go to the Star Wars expanded universe, wipe out the Thrawn trilogy and the rest of the expanded universe. Once more, Star Wars will rule the box office, and we shall have peace...
Lol
Outstanding 🙏
Meh, the Mandalorian, Clone Wars S7, and Bad Batch are better than anything in Timothy Zahn's terrible oeuvre. Thank heavens there was never any Ysalimiri, Paaaaaaaaalpatine, Luuuuuuuke, or Joruuuuuus C'Baoth.
@@admiralbob77 Damn you.
😂😂😂😂😂
2:42 you can tell Anakin knows deep down that what he is doing is wrong, but he keeps telling himself, this is all to save padme.
Anakin is conflicted in this scene
this whole Episode is absolutely my favorite. Love it sm
Man, Palpatine finally saying "Vader" for the first time would have been more impactful if... a demon hadn't BURPED in the background immediately after.
He said it twice
That sound you heard, along with his voice changing, is the Dark Side manifest within Sidious. It spoke through him. The Dark Side was so pleased with the fall of the Chosen One, that it manifested and flowed freely through Darth Sidious.
Well, at least there was an Imperial March
Looking back at these scenes. What a wonderful movie. I’m really glad they’re being appreciated now.
I love 1:55 - 2:15 here Ian didn't make his iconic voice, but it is deep and calculated one, which is whole different sort of sinister.
They made Palpatine seem like he was The Devil in the prequel trilogy
Turn on captions, go to 3:00 "only then will you be strong enough in the dark side to save *batman*" 😂💀
Seeing anakin turn to the dark side always gets to me man
