  • Dry Eye, or Keratoconjunctivitis sicca (KCS), to give it its medical name; is a very common complaint. So why is it that so many people live in misery because they can't get relief for their dry eyes? We're gonna be talking a lot more about dry eye on this channel, but before we can talk about the causes and treatment for dry eyes, we need to establish what type of dry eye you have. The good news is that there are only two main categories of dry eye problems based on the health of your tears.

    About this video:
Hi I'm optometrist Martin Oguzie, this video is part one of three videos on basic dry eye (Keratoconjunctivitis sicca or KCS) tips. We start by explaining the problem of dry eye via an explanation of what it is. This is best explained by dissecting the medical name for the condition; keratoconjunctivitis sicca or KSC as it is often shortened to. In the two other videos that will follow in the coming weeks, I will explain the causes of dry eye and some important points for effective treatment, that will hopefully be helpful for anyone managing their own evaporative dry eye or their aqueous deficient KCS with an eye care professional.

I got this type of dry eye from artificial tears eye drop. My problem was just eye strain of my severe photophobia but the doctor prescribed me to use eye drop 3 times a day. For 3 weeks I started to see flashes and I stop using the drop. Next I notice my conjunctiva are becoming very rough and dry. I should not have use eye drop I regret it so much. I don't know if I'll l be having this forever. It's even more frustrating the treatment of it is eye drop but I CAN'T USE ONE BECAUSE IT IS THE CAUSE. I'm so helpless to this severe painful and gritty eyes. Now I don't just suffer from photophobia and eyestrain but also severe dry eyes.

Hi Erika, I can’t see any obvious reason why any lubricant eye drops would cause you to get flashes of light. I suggest you get checked out to make sure there is nothing else going on. Then follow a dry eye regimen that includes a Sodium hyaluronate eye drop, eyelid hygiene, hydration and inflammation reduction via nutrition. Those steps should be a good general starting point.

@@meyetips I'm sorry doc but I'm confused too as why such after using artificial tear drop just for weeks caused me to start seeing flashes and eventually for months, some other things around too. Maybe it was just a trigger to all of my visual disturbances now that's I regret using it. I stopped it and immediately searched the possible side effects of eye drop. Research shows seeing flashes is not one of them so I ignored it. At first I'm just seeing it at night or in dark. The next thing in mornings, my vision seems flickering in below area. It's probably due to retina according to the symtoms so I came back to doctor, told him I'm seeing these after I used the drop. I suggested it became contaminated or maybe I'm just allergic to it but he said there's no bacterial infection and my retina is fine. The eyes have some layers to protect the retina and internal parts of eyes. Maybe it was migrain he said. I almost believed also it's migrain even though I don't vomit nor having severe headaches just to convince myself there's nothing really wrong in my eyes. After days without using the drop anymore, I noticed the surfaces of my eyes are so glassy especially the small inflamed parts. it's so odd for me. In sides there are little wrinkles making those look like rough. My eyes became very painful then, feels like they are burning and sometimes unexpectedly teary. I was just enduring those til I found out these are symptoms of dry eyes. I searched after what type of dry eye and I feel like it is mixed type of dry eyes because my eyelids are so oily too. I have blurry vision in mornings and rinsing my eyes with water and soap removes those oils. Still, I haven't put anything to my eyes though confirmed they are dry and will be painful. Drop is the treatment but I can't use one anymore. Warm compress is what I'm doing. It helps me a bit to alleviate the pain. Month of May, I figured out these flashes and flickering are not due to my retina, these are happening because the vitreous gel in my eyes. I was not sure what I was thinking. I'm no expert anyway but my normal floaters increased a lot. I didn't have floaters in left eye but I got so many so that's big indicator for me that indeed the defects are in the vitreous. These gels seem like they are electrified or something that made my vision spinning like looking the top of small whirlpools or ripples. It's permanent and occasionally then I'm seeing stars and flashes in center while I move. I visited another doctor for a 3rd eye check up, a vitreo-retina specialist. No findings still. My eyes are dry but my vitreous inside are fine. Some people told me I should stop worrying but I'm still very bothered. As much as I want to believe this is just migrain or maybe I'm just being delusional and hallucinating here, this watery gelly spinning vision is permanent that making me see flashes or small stars so I conclude those are not the cases. I miss my good normal vision. It never came back. I really hope not yet. Besides as someone who's a psych major student, it's so hard to believe that these are ocular effect psychological problem. Again because this is permanent, not episodic. It's even distracting me so bad in reading. My view feels like raining and looking away there are streaks of lights after for seconds.
I guess since this dryness came and the severe eye strain and photophobia are not resolved yet, my eyes had then a hard time so protect the stability of the inside parts certainly the gelly part. It is disturbed now. It's spinning. It's unstable permanently. I would really prefer to have just floaters than this one even big floaters I can take it not just this. This the worse. The glares and other reflections stay for a while inside my eyeballs and scatter in my field of my vision. Not to mention the photophobia as this was my main problem just way before the drop. I don't know how to get rid of it anymore. My eyes are more prone now to pain. They are dry when they weren't before. I have to do things for this one first.

@@meyetips Thank you for this advice. I'll do some of these. Eyelid hygiene is a great help. Also the warm compress. I'll starting to eat food that good for eyes now.

I'm ayesha,,, suffered from keratoconjunctivis sicca due to Steven Johnson happened in my teen age,, since 14 years I'm putting tears natural drops after every 6 to 7 minute,,, do you invent or made other treatments to increase timing of eye lubrication,,

Try something thicker or something that contains Carboma like Viscotears. If the drops have preservatives, don’t use them more than 4 times a day. You should definitely visit your eye specialist to get a review of your lubricants though.

I'm from Pakistan,, my eye doctors are really very kind, it's been 14 year of using tears natural, I have used different lubricants, gels, viscotears, but I found tears natural drops most comfortable or less irritable drops, but use after every 6 to 7 minute,,, I've completed my whole studies with this .....

So it sounds like the biggest frustration is how often you have to keep using it and not their effectiveness. Other alternative options to discuss with your eye specialists are ciclosporin eye drops such as Ikervis and Restasis or even a serum eye drop.
