I started reading the Bible and seeking help from God I realized I couldn't do it. I had always thought Walk by faith not by sight was a very important part of my life I had struggled a lot in my life and I always kept going in my faith in something rather than what I could see. Later that day I was on Netflix scrolling through and I went over this movie two or three times, I don't normally watch Netflix so it has to be interesting.. Ended up saying "let me watch this". I remember hearing that line of scripture and realized God was speaking to me in the Holy Spirit. I skipped over that movie multiple times and felt the need to watch it. I had totally missed that the book was placed in between the religious texts! I love how, as you said, the movie exposes the virtues and flaws Christianity and if I dare, faith in general, in hopes to give a balanced assestment. Specially for people in the most in the post-apocalypse one could argue that the world was either in the most dire need of a message of salvation and the idea of a better tomorrow through faith; or at their most vulnerable to be manipulated through the text by corrupt, power hungry and brain washing tyrants trying to capitalize in the people's desperation. I for one found myself asking myself what would be the effects of any widespread religion in that world, undependently of the intentions of the person carrying the main message may be benevolent, for a world in such a desperate need of hope. Amazing movie and thanks for the review!
For me this is one my favorite post apocalyptic movies. I love the subtle world building along with the themes of religion and preservation of knowledge.
This movie touched me when I first seen it years ago being in active addiction a lot transpired to my current lifestyle….I felt as if my life was like their post apocalyptic world and that the word of god was my only saving grace and by the time I seen it I had been to rehab countless times and tried relocating. I believe in god and the Bible and it had helped….I’ve had relapses since but been clean for a while now but I do play a lot of video games but my mom and wife say it’s a better addiction
Just watched the film, and God why isn't this film already legendary at this point? It's thought provoking, action scenes were well-choreographed, cast is great, and plot twists are amazing. Definitely one of those movies that you have to watch atleast two times to catch all the tiny, hidden details and whatnot. Also, thanks for this analysis. You made me praise this movie even more by explaining some of the ideas I've missed.
I thought it was a cool movie but for my christian mother this movie was one of the most inspirational movies she's ever seen about the strength of having faith. I think it shows that there is a hidden brilliance in this movie that some of us can't see
Denzel is an amazing actor, I've been watching his movies since Glory and he never disapoints. This movie is among his top in my opinion and the fact he gets to go against another amazing actor like Gary Oldman is just the icing on the cake. I can not wait to watch your video on Equilibrium, another amazingly good and underrated movie.
Absolutely loved this movie. I watch it a couple of times a year. One thing I did notice. As the movie progresses, it gets less bleak and becomes more colorful. A star-studded cast including 3 from Harry Potter!
Its funny. Minor critique. You said eli was shot and the bible taken. But, eli gave it away then he was shot. He was "told" not to let anyone touch the book. Notice the moment he does let some one else touch it. A bullet finally hits him... With lightning as it happens.... Like many figures in the bible, he decides not to trust and it cost him
Like honestly though, gods supposed to be our father right? So I grew up without a dad most of my life, but honestly, I’d rather have an absent father then one who constantly tests my faith in him. He made us right? We didn’t ask him to bring us into this realm? So how messed up is it that he hold us to such a high standard? All the while, we are told not to tempt the lord. What about the story of job? God and Satan made a bet to see if job would lose his mind or remain faithful while they both took turns torturing this poor man. A man who never questioned god in the place? Sounds like the plot of The Dark Knight.

@@greatfox232 see well that’s the issue, I suppose, if god made us in his own image, and god is all perfect, then why and how exactly did our hearts become deceitful and wicked. Oh right cuz daddy tested eve and of course, she failed. I see it as her being protected to go back and find her mother and live a prosperous life somehow with the knowledge she learned from Eli. She will bring faith back to the world.

Dude the fact you mentioned EQUILIBRIUM!! One of the most underrated movies of all time! And F451 too. Makes me wonder... does modern day Hollywood want the public to forget these stories were ever made? 🤔
I love the idea that he was blind because it makes him more badass. That being said I have a few questions, how was he able to shoot the cat, and the bird out of the sky? Also how was he able to shoot all the bad guys and fight them. Example of this would be when he uses the Barretta to shoot like 3 dudes off the roof.
I know I’m only like a year late but figured I’d chime in. He’s able to use echolocation to “see” where things are. He doesn’t shoot the cat until it meows first. He doesn’t shoot the snipers off the roof until they shoot first (their gunshots echo off the buildings and he’s able to tell where they are that way). This is also why he randomly clicks throughout the movie, jingles his necklace when Solara’s mom asks where he’s at, etc. In the fight scene towards the beginning, he backs up underneath the bridge so he can use echolocation to “see” where the bad guys are. The echo of the chainsaw bounces off the walls, revealing where they are to him. This is why he saves the chainsaw guy for last. Also the reason why his machete has holes in it is so it can whistle through the air, thus causing noise and helping him “see” where his attackers are.
The answer is simple and it’s said plainly in the movie. He walks by faith, not sight. As in he’s not the doing the things he’s doing on his own, he’s merely surrendering himself and allowing his body to act as a conduit for the will of god. You could say that for all intents and purposes it’s god or one of his angels pulling the trigger and swinging the blade. What’s happening in the movie is a very literal interpretation of a core Christian principle (I.E. surrendering of the self for the greater glory of god) and it leads to some exceptional scenes in the film.
After this movie and the movie “The Road,” i always think to myself “this could be my last cheeseburger or shower or anything.” It made me appreciate things more
I'm so excited for Equilibrium! I remember watching that movie when I was really young and it left an imprint on me, made me seek out books like 1984 and Fahrenheit 451.
I love how Eli basically memorised the whole book just in case of the worst but that begs the question, why did he need it if he could literally tell anyone to record what he said just so it can be mass produced.....I mean HE literally is a walking bible in a sense.
Eli: It was, I was carrying and reading it everyday, got so caught up in protecting it, I forgot to live by what I'd learnt from it Solara: And what's that? Eli: To do more for others than you do for yourself
Another of my favourite movies! Yay! This movie is really pretty deep. And Denzel Washington's acting was pretty stellar. I was so surprised when the character Eli was revealed to be blind the first time I watched it.
Love the video. It's so interesting that the only "religious wars" we are familiar with are the crusades. I wonder to myself is this because of the dominance of western historical preservation? I only hear about religious wars in European influenced spaces. Also love the outro music!
The Islamic wars into Europe predate the crusades and are rather forgotten as they aren't being taught or really even talked about. They occurred over a much longer period of time, in much more countries, with much more battles and slaves taken. I think Spain alone had over 200 battles occur within its borders. It's something that should be mentioned when people talk about great religious wars of the past.
It's quite funny that the crusades are first to be mentioned in a discussion about religious wars, yet the Islamic wars, which preceded the crusades and are still carried out to this day, aren't mentioned at all. I suspect some bias is at play.
Omg cant wait for Equilibrium. Such an unknown, underrated gem, one of my all time favorites. Every time I show it to a friend who never heard of it its like "wait isnt this...Batman..wait isnt this..Boromir..eh Eddard Stark....why I never heard of this movie, omg those fighting scenes look fantastic"
I remember first watching this when i was 12, I’ve always loved this movie. Always loved when Carnegie finds out that the book is all in brail. Only Eli can read it.
Holy shit, I have watched this movie so many times and this is the first time I understand that he was blind, can you believe it. So many times. Thanks mate, love your channel!
This is the movie that made Denzel one of my favorite actors. Then the way he behaves in real life is the cherry on top. All on all he's such a great guy.
the sad part about this, is in our current world today so many people willfully ignore the past and every bit of history from books to photos to film and documentaries and even living testaments from older folks who lived through events and go on a repeat the same mistakes again
If you rewatch the movie after finding out he's blind, you see subtle hints of it throughout the movie. Like feeling around for things, reacting to sounds, enhanced smell. Also being blind wouldn't be a reason to not wear shades. Blind doesn't equal black nothingness vision. The sun would still burn his eyes if he didnt wear them.
The thing is the movie tells you with the way he moves and processes smell and noise that he was blind prior to the apocalypse hints why he can read braille he was given sight for his journey but kept the mannerisms of a blind person cause sight was new to him and when he dies at the end his eyes get cloudy because his job is done and he no longer needs sight
I love the music you picked for this video. The only source of knowledge is experience. Your own experience or the experience of others. I was one of those kids who had to touch fire to see if if was hot I learned from my mistakes.
This is one of my favorite movies of all time, and I think it's very underrated. I'm not a religious man by any stretch of the imagination, but Book of Eli hits the nail on the head when it comes to theocratic conflict. Both Eli and Carnegie are right in their outlook of The Bible, but ultimately the Curator is the one who has it. The Bible is a tool, and how it's used depends on the person weilding it. It can be a beacon of hope and guide to moralistic good, or it can be a weapon, used to cut down anyone who dissents and strays out of line. But ultimately it's information that shouldn't be neglected or lost.
Verse 1 " I walk by faith not by sight " Verse 2 " Its means that you know something - Even you dont know something " Verse 3 " And Doesn`t Even Make sense " ( cause ) Verse 4 " Its Faith ,Its Faith . Its a Flower of light in the field of darkness that giving me strength to carry on " if you want to claim you`re dream ,trust your FAITH and the will of GOD
“And there are also many other things which Jesus did, the which, if they should be written every one, I suppose that even the world itself could not contain the books that should be written. Amen.” John 21:25
Denzel first being captured and saying “there’s always a choice” when Garry oldman forces him to stay in town is one of the most impactful scenes/quotes I’ve ever seen. Even in a fallen world, surrounded by sin, temptation, you can choose light and choose God.
"We should never forget the past." *Proceeds to watch 2021 unfold on the same things done in the past that lead to tyranny and opression.* Alright time to get ready for another conflict age.
Such a powerful storyline. What's even more powerful is its relatability to the seemliest unlikely stories of real people. Just listen how Tony Scott relates his life experiences to this movie on the RUclips channel, LAST OF A DYNG SEED.

I love the subtle world building along with the themes of religion and preservation of knowledge.
tremendously underrated film with an excellent musical score.... every time I re-watch it I'm entertained.
Thanks for breaking this one down. One of my favorites that many have missed out on. I liked the tension and the feel-good ending.
Can't wait to watch your Equilibrium video. Love that movie.
It’s soo good
This movie touched me when I first seen it years ago being in active addiction a lot transpired to my current lifestyle….I felt as if my life was like their post apocalyptic world and that the word of god was my only saving grace and by the time I seen it I had been to rehab countless times and tried relocating. I believe in god and the Bible and it had helped….I’ve had relapses since but been clean for a while now but I do play a lot of video games but my mom and wife say it’s a better addiction
Hang tough, buddy. Lean on your faith and loved ones. They are there to help.
I think it shows that there is a hidden brilliance in this movie that some of us can't see
Criminally underrated movie. Very glad to see the comments and how many people connected with this film. This is going to become a cult classic.
I friggin LOVE this flick. Very underated while very thought provoking 😁
Absolutely loved this movie. I watch it a couple of times a year. One thing I did notice. As the movie progresses, it gets less bleak and becomes more colorful. A star-studded cast including 3 from Harry Potter!
I like how your scripts sound like an essay when you pay attention to it. Very entertaining
Lets get this man to a million his videos are always high quality and entertaining
One of my most favorite youtubers covering one of my top 3 movies?! This is what pure happiness feels like 😌
I adore this movie, I put it right up the top with my favorites and I've had people roll their eyes at me for it
It’s finally happened. I requested this 3yrs ago. Glad I am still alive to see it.
Denzel has incredible presence on screen.
On screen and in real life. His interviews and everyday interactions with people are legendary :)
@@filmcomicsexplained Agreed a truly fine actor and human being.
Its funny. Minor critique. You said eli was shot and the bible taken. But, eli gave it away then he was shot.
He was "told" not to let anyone touch the book. Notice the moment he does let some one else touch it. A bullet finally hits him... With lightning as it happens.... Like many figures in the bible, he decides not to trust and it cost him
Amazing observation!
@@Ifuddontlikeitwatchsomthinelse id argue were not held to such a high standard, out side of trust Yahushua sacrifice, and be filled and guided by the holy spirit. Reason being, God did make us. And he does know our hearts are ,accroding to Scripture, deceitful and desperately wicked.the whole point is we need help.
@@Ifuddontlikeitwatchsomthinelse but the movie isnt really about the gospel at all. I wouldn't even call this a Christian movie. Its more of just a faith based movie
@@greatfox232 see well that’s the issue, I suppose, if god made us in his own image, and god is all perfect, then why and how exactly did our hearts become deceitful and wicked. Oh right cuz daddy tested eve and of course, she failed.
But really, if you think about it for one and a half seconds, you will realize that it’s not because god made her wicked, but because she was human and god had nothing to do with her creation.
Im truly sad that they never made a second one, the ending made it out to be that she will pick up his mantle and carry on.
But what new story could it tell? Eli completed his mission and restored the Word in the wasteland.
@@Mudoh415 I dont know, but why leave the ending the way they did if they were never going to continue it?
Denzel has only done one sequel in his entire career (Equilizer 2) so most likely he never planned on doing a sequel for Eli.
I see it as her being protected to go back and find her mother and live a prosperous life somehow with the knowledge she learned from Eli. She will bring faith back to the world.
A highly underrated and fantastic film. A must watch. Glad to see this critique on it.
This might seem random. But I love your profile picture.
I remember some Priest who did a review saying the Film was about Modern society losing faith in god.
Which isn't the point of the Film.
Obviously.
Since the Priest is just doing what the Main Villain is doing.
Yeah he didn't understand that the point was that people have FORGOTTEN the words of God.

Your videos are always succinct and a wonderful starting point for anyone wishing to look into these various works
I loved this movie. A real unexpected gem
Yeah I know I saw this in theaters.
I do remember seein' this in the cinema and lovin' it...
but i never saw it again...
Maybe I'll rewatch it!
The power of belief in this movie is awesome.
Omg I'm so glad to know im not the only one who loves equilibrium, and that part where he runs to her before she burn made me cry like a baby
One of my favorite movies of all time and I'm an atheist. This movie was about having faith and was done well.
This is a modern classic that deserves a prequel or aequwl.
After this movie and the movie “The Road,” i always think to myself “this could be my last cheeseburger or shower or anything.”
It made me appreciate things more
I'm so excited for Equilibrium!
He explains that in the movie when he loses it.
Eli: It was, I was carrying and reading it everyday, got so caught up in protecting it, I forgot to live by what I'd learnt from it
Solara: And what's that?
Eli: To do more for others than you do for yourself
@Archie the Bible was written for blind people in a specific dot formation that only he knew about (or were you making a joke I didn't catch)
Thus the book of Eli, he is the book El it's code the book of El Eli is God . Note he is shot in the side his arms go outward the cross.

Another of my favourite movies! Yay! This movie is really pretty deep. And Denzel Washington's acting was pretty stellar. I was so surprised when the character Eli was revealed to be blind the first time I watched it.
Awesome content! Keep up the good work man!
Will do, thank you :)
Amazing movie with so much symbolism and meaning.
Very profound movie that I love. Cheers everyone.
Watched this with my uncle when I was younger, really good stuff
It was a genius plot twist when it was revealed that he’s been blind the whole time
I remember first watching this when i was 12, I’ve always loved this movie. Always loved when Carnegie finds out that the book is all in brail. Only Eli can read it.
Love the movie Denzel Washington gives a great performance in this as usual.
Holy shit, I have watched this movie so many times and this is the first time I understand that he was blind, can you believe it. So many times. Thanks mate, love your channel!
Good morning
Good morning!
At first I didn't understand the book of Eli but then my mom broke it down for me and now it makes sense
This is the movie that made Denzel one of my favorite actors. Then the way he behaves in real life is the cherry on top. All on all he's such a great guy.
Scary how we are so close to the reality of this movie 😬.
Hope it comes sooner
This one is one of my favorite movies; thanks for the video!
Okay, this and Fury Road are tied for my all-time favorite post-apocalyptic movies
have you seen The Road with Virgo Mortinsen, and 28 weeks later and the girl with all the gifts
@@Tahokmusic I haven't seen girl with all the gifts, the 28 weeks movies are good and the road was just too depressing for me
the sad part about this, is in our current world today so many people willfully ignore the past and every bit of history from books to photos to film and documentaries and even living testaments from older folks who lived through events and go on a repeat the same mistakes again
He wasn't blind hence why he wore sun glasses at day and not by night....his sight was returned to him for his task

I killed the like button bro..... This is one of my favorite movies of all time. One of Denzel overlooked classics, like John Q.
If you were to ever be a professor at college, your class would be the only one I actually 100% pay attention too XD the way you talk is captivating
Denzel first being captured and saying “there’s always a choice” when Garry oldman forces him to stay in town is one of the most impactful scenes/quotes I’ve ever seen. Even in a fallen world, surrounded by sin, temptation, you can choose light and choose God.

sadly yes but history is the greatest teacher. people making the mistakes of the past gives you the advantage if you know history.
We've known about the mistakes of the past for a while now hasn't stopped us from enthusiastically repeating those blunders continuously

Never bring yourself to a Denzel fight.
