    Love your picks. You know, I know that some people may think "uuh just donate to them directly" but it would be so cool if you could donate to a fund through FUTO that increases the sizes of these grants. I would totally do that, even set up a regular payment thing. And I'm the kind of person who hates subscription services lol.

      I thought the same thing the other day! Sort of like a indirect way to support FOSS through a list of projects curated by people we trust are advocates for it

  • @johanngambolputty5351
    @johanngambolputty5351 4 месяца назад

    I've always kind of thought there should be like a fractional investment kinda thing but for FOSS, like indices, but for donating. Like with donating to FSF or FUTO, who will hand out funds, but with more control over who you want the money to be handed to afterwards. Like say you take some amount you find affordable, e.g. 10 local currency units, you specify the projects you use/are interested in and some proportions that you want the money to be split in (a bit like humble bundle?), initially it goes into some holding pool, the desired donation amounts from everyone get aggregated and then you send out the money to each project. Just really lower the barrier to donating broadly.

      I guess being an org like FUTO changes things a bit... Next on the list of great FOSS projects that can't be donated to but absolutely deserve it is uBlock origin

    A relatively unrelated question. Does FUTO have a Discord set up yet?

    • @theskyblockman
      @theskyblockman 4 месяца назад +1

      They don't want one, they just have a Zulip

    • @PathForger_
      @PathForger_ 4 месяца назад

      @@theskyblockman Okay. Thank you for clarifying. I'm guessing that will change at some point (although moderation might be an issue)

    • @theskyblockman
      @theskyblockman 4 месяца назад +2

      @@PathForger_ I mean they don't want to work with Discord (Louis made a video about their ToS changes and how you can't reject them by saying it is r*ping mentality)

    • @PathForger_
      @PathForger_ 4 месяца назад

      @@theskyblockman Hmm. Louis also said that if all major players (such as major auto makers) are engaging in the same bad behavior then the choice to avoid becomes less viable, and that it is unreasonable to expect to make a competitor from scratch (or something to that effect).
      However I can understand that not all platforms are desirable - and something like discord can involve a level of engagement far surpassing the comments section of a video or a tweet or such.

    • @theskyblockman
      @theskyblockman 4 месяца назад +1

      @@PathForger_ There are alternatives to discord like Matrix which are open source that Louis/FUTO probably supports, and you don't need millions to create a Matrix instance, unlike a car. It is totally reasonable to want to create a competitor to some big player by not being evil (Google should take a note on that) when that's possible. Windows is evil? Here's Linux. You don't like RUclips? Peertube is here for you. You don't want Twitter? Just use Mastodon.
      FUTO isn't against the idea of Discord, just they hate the execution which is clearly against FUTOs mission.

    Never seen Exiftool and Garage, largely because it's currently of no use to me. But I use Wine and Valve's Proton fork frequently, so it's great to see it get funding. It's a shame to see FUTO support Hyprland given the community's history of transphobia, which while it seems to have improved now, it has not done so sufficiently. It would be nice to see FUTO put more effort into being cautious with the projects they support.

  • @firstwolfplus
    @firstwolfplus 4 месяца назад +1

    I'd seriously consider vetting the stability of the hyperland dev team before continuing any additional funding. There's been some meltdowns from the dev recently that have caused concern for the project's integrity.

  • @the_original_dude
    @the_original_dude 4 месяца назад +2

    Would've been nice if you didn't support C++ projects.
    That language is a complete abomination.

    • @citrusNikOs
      @citrusNikOs 4 месяца назад +3

      Why would it matter in what language a program was written in when it is a compiled language? A compiler will turn your program into object code which doesn't care in which language it was originally written and can be linked with any other object code. And C++ is one of the best in regard of being linkable with everything.

      This is the stupidest thing I've ever heard

    • @the_original_dude
      @the_original_dude 4 месяца назад +1

      @@citrusNikOs it matters because it correlates to the quality and availability of tooling and libraries.
      (language like C should receive more attention to have a better ecosystem)

    • @raccoons_stole_my_account

      exiftool is in Perl :(

    • @citrusNikOs
      @citrusNikOs 4 месяца назад

      @@the_original_dude then, C++ is your best choice because it's a very popular, widely recognized language that doesn't have things like builtin garbage collection (like in go) or a dependency on an entire ecosystem (like rust's cargo). All that makes it very easy to create libraries in C++ or to incorporate C++ programs into other programs, maybe even written in other languages. The only language that is better than C++ in this regard is C, but C doesn't have as much useful language constructs, such as templates, as C++.
