I'm not an expert, but I'm sure most aquatic mammals have longer hair than those short bristles on the model. I think the long hairs actually fold over to hold in the air. These short bristles would have a very high drag coefficient, not good for moving through water efficiently. I wonder if they had a variable for the length of the hairs in their mathematical model?
phlogiston there's a difference between "planes should flap their wings" and "planes should be built of light enough material". If the bristle length being too short makes it unable to trap air, then it's just as critical as airplane material's lightness, and not like your flapping-wing straw argument

fantastic, now the issue with these new techniques is never their copying of nature, but the next step: trying to get manufacturing up to scale, durable and cheap enough for it to become competitive with rubber. That will take a long time.....

The wetsuit company is surely "Rip Curl". The technology brandname "Flashbomb". The fur is inside. I own one, they're around 600$, but they're magnificent.
depending on the direction of the lie of the fur, you could theoretically, if artificially propelled, direct your "flight" through the water, if but minutely. or use superhydrophobic material to create air pockets on the surface of a suit, to enhance ascension

the problem with keeping people warm in urethane wetsuits doesnt come from its insulation properties alone, it's from its water tightness. Not only do non-watertight wetsuits reduce the effect of keeping the body warm, but it also causes a nasty rash on your chest

Interesting thought...one thing that should be considered...otters and beavers generally move in a forward direction...humans meanwhile move forward and backwards in all three planes...the singular direction of otter/beavers help keep the air trapped in their fur...along with the direction of their fur...this design would be very specialized...a suit for a person traveling in a single direction and for a short amount of time (air would eventually be disentrained)...maybe cold water competitive swimming...again cool thought but not sure about the application for humans...if there was a robot that needed to be kept warm that traveled in a single direction this would be perfect...have you considered actually incorporating air into the material? maybe similar to neoprene with more air...or have the fur on the inside? although fur on the inside would require seals around the neck hands and ankles like a dry suit so water wouldn't leak in

I am proposing something closer to wetsuit neoprene material that is sealed similar to a drysuit
neoprene wetsuits work by having foam that insulates the water that your body warms in between the suit and your body...in a dry suit a water proof material protects you from getting wet...and they may or may not on its own keep you warm...a lot of divers wear a light sweater underneath their drysuit...
My thought of "incorporating air into the material" would be that the air within the material would be the actual insulator...similar to how some mugs work to insulate your drink...the hard part would be to have the material flexible enough to facilitate use under water...on one hand if it is not flexible enough you can't move...on the other the pockets of air compress so you lose it's insulating property...the only thing I can think of is if the air is under pressure maybe it would prevent the air pocket compression...but even then you are trading off flexibility for insulation

Barry Young They are doing it by having air trapped between the hairs and using adhesion of the molecules and surface tension keeping the air in the "hairs" so water cannot push it out. That way eliminating any need to hold pressurized air. You last comment is exactly what a wetsuit is, your body heats the water between you and the suit, but also the neoprene is a cell foam that traps air bubbles in the foam to add additional insulation which is why you have thicker and thicker wetsuits (such as a 7mm or 8mm) problem is they are still transferring too much heat, so they made the dry suit which does what a vacuum mug does and creates an air pocket, but under water to keep that air from being compressed it needs to match the pressure of the water pushing in which can be huge, so that is why they are thick and not flexible.

I think the trick lies on the grease of the hair, given its hydrophobic properties, coupled with the already mentioned properties of air trapped between bristles.
I see this technology having more future in perfecting insulating jackets for subartic temperatures, tho. I believe the only way a wetsuit can be effective is if it has an internal fluid thermic system, ideally one that requires as less energy as possible to maintain a constant temperature. Maybe a heavily hypertonic fluid? I dunno.

I want to try to develop a fursuit in which you can swim in. I’ve been studying different designs, it’s not that easy, but someone needs to invent this type of fursuit!

Divers and surfers use neoprene, which is a sort of a foam, or in other words, air trapped in rubber.... Using hair like texture is interesting, but I don't see it happening....

Classic wet suits let water in that your body heats up. As it does not transpire away as fast as it would without your suit (its kept inside for the most part) that's what keeps you warm.
With this material air is used as an insulation material. Air does not transmit heat as well as water does, so as you are not in contact with water but with air, you lose way less heat to the air than you would lose to water.

Love M.I.T., but this hardly seems innovative. A flexible polymer foam sponge thermal insulator with an open-cell structure would be just as efficient, if not more so. It could even be applied as an insulating coating to already existing materials.
They also aren't considering the most basic of thermal conductivity principles;
