I’m very excited to see Tim’s review of 8.6. I would absolutely love to see Tim and Jason go to Q and do a build and a tour. Thank you to both parties for putting this out for the world to see!
Thank you and thank you for watching. Kevin is traveling the world hunting right now but I hope to connect with him when he returns, sometime after the first of the year.
Bought my first Q product this past year, a Mini Fix, followed shortly after with a Honey Badger. I can’t begin to express how exceptional these guns are. I will definitely be buying an 8.6.
Thank you. We will do them as they present themselves. There's a lot of knowledge out there and I would love to be able to document some of it. Thank you for watching.
I assembled a 308 this year for deer & hog hunting. Used Aero M5 receivers Faxon 18" big gunner 308 barrel giesssle ssae-x trigger. I've only got 80 rounds through it between range & deer hunting. But locked down in the Caldwell lead sled shooting 150 gn core-lokts it's consistently shooting 1/2" groups at 100 yards. That's cold & hot, doesn't make a difference. That barrel likes that ammo which is what I use for deer. I have other Faxon barrels & they all shoot good. But I have been extremely impressed with the 308 Faxon!!!
A lot of people arent picking up on WHY Kevin seems so annoyed by Hornady. Q isn't an ammo company. So this isnt just competition 💩 talk. If you listen to his side of this, Hornady was ORIGINALLY a collaborator on 8.6. Q was positioning them to be the primary ammo company for it. They gave them guns to experiment with. Hornady made a sub x for them. Because Q isnt an ammo company they NEEDED a partner to make 8.6 happen. Hornady essentially pulled out, leaving litle Q without a corporate sponsor. No one to lobby for SAAMI approval no one to produce volume and increase availability. They had to push back their rollout for a couple years and re-position with totally different companies and go the wildcat route. Then Hornady rolls out 338arc, talks smack about 8.6 and pretends they had nothing to do with any of it.
WOW 😲, finally I got my answer why chrome lined barrels are less accurate! Thank you! When searching the Web all I ever got was "They don't shoot accurately". Thank you 😊
@@vicdiaz5180but if you REALLY compare the prices of high end guns, Q’s prices aren’t nearly the highest. Look at B&T’s prices, it’ll make your heart stop.

I haven’t picked it up yet because ammo companies are still trying to gut us like dead fish, and I’m not really buying any ammo at all these days, just going through my stash, and I hope most people are doing the same, or at least trying to get it as cheap as possible or buying remanufactured ammo or making their own instead (just doing anything to avoid paying full prices) But once ammo prices go down at least a lil more, I’d love to pickup a super carry option or convert a gun to super carry. Got to shoot a whitetail with a buddy's homebrew, 8.6 bolt gun this year. Taken with a sub at around 100 yards. Absolutely devastating. The sound of that massive bullet making contact was nuts. That rotational energy is real
Everything in firearms is a tradeoff because of physics. In the history of firearms the 2 that most people have played with are velocity and projectile weight. So barrel length, bullet construction, and powder were what everyone changed to achieve the goal. That spans smokeless and black powder. Well now twist rate has been added to the mix and expands the field on what you can play with to achieve terminal ballistics. The only reason 1:7 exists in 5.56 is because of M856 and M855 to make them stable. Not to help them perform better on target but just make them work in the M16 because of the lineage of the cartridge and technology available at the time.
Glad you had Kevin on a very interesting segment. From afar away stance seen Ammunition companies not work with firearm companies. Case an point is the 350 legend. A reintroduction of the century old 351 self loading.

Makes me happy to hear the discussion regarding S. Dev. If you have put any time into really trying to squeeze accuracy out of a round you're developing, as long as you track ENOUGH data, you come to accept that s.d number being significant. When you really hit on a good one you can get down under 50 or even 25fps.
338 arc is only for sub sonic. It's for people who don't want to deal with supers and subs, and only want subs. 8.6blk is for people who want supers and subs that thump. They're different in purpose.
Very interesting discussion! Especially about twist rates and subsonic projectiles in rifles. Since I'm still learning about such things. Always wondered why pistols had slow twist rates. Now I'm wondering if a fast twist in a 45acp would work better? But I'm not an engineer...
Question for Kevin, if he could only build 1 300 bo sbr or pistol. What barrel length would you choose for supper & subs?. You said military went with 9 just for storage & 12 is better for suppers. What's best length for both?
The magpul 6.8 mags are still made. Brownells and midway USA still list them. I have a lwrc receiver set that I built into a pistol with a 1:7 twist. Ironically never shot any subs through it. Thinking of using it for a 338 spectre since shooting subs is more my interest now anyway.
Barnes used to make a series of copper expanding Spitzer bullets with a tungsten lead colloid core they called silver something. Something like a Maker expander with a tungsten (heavi shot style) base would take FULL advantage of that spin. What kind of weight could that allow for? 🤷♂️ Maybe 375-400 grain? I'd love to see what's possible.
Just started watching this but immediately went to comments…I’m definitely intrigued now because I’ve never seen as positive of a reaction to any video or interview Kevin has done.
The question I really want Kevin to answer is this, is the rpm of a bullet travelling at 1000fps out of a 1:3 barrel not literally just equivalent to the rpm of a bullet leaving a 1:9 twist barrel at 3000fps?
The degree of non concentricity of jacketed ammo interacts with twist rate to produce greater or lesser inaccuracy. Faster twist is NOT better with imperfect ammo. Of course copper solids change that calculation.
You absolutely can suppress an SFAR but it's going to eat the lifetime like it would on any gas-operated, plus additional impact due to the reduced size/footprint compared to previous AR10/LR308 makes.
You just need to restrict gas pressure at or before the bolt carrier / piston (the carrier acts as a piston due to the expansion chamber the gas gets vented into pushing the carrier rearward, and unlocking the bolt due to the cam grove geometry)
Love this conversation but at 1:12:25 I have a problem with you guys comparing upper to lower fitment tightness on the AR platform to the tightness on a 1911 barrel to slide, slide to frame fit. Slack in AR uppers and lowers seems to be simply laziness and unacceptable machining tolerances to avoid having to scrap more parts that get machined outside those tolerances. Not the same thing at all. And i don't believe for one second that tight upper/lower tolerances cause reliability issues. Tell that to SOLGW and their rifle owners!!! My Son's of Liberty rifles are as solid as if they are one piece and among the most reliable and most precise I have.

There are balance tradeoffs to everything. If you're going up to 9.3mm, why not go all the way up to 10mm? And while you're there, why bother with a proprietary bolt head, just use the 30 Rem/6.8SPC/10mm/40SW case head. And if it's mostly for suppressed use, why not go as low as commonly available 180gr subsonic loads? Why bother with a custom cartridge at all when you're just re-making 40SW and can relatively cheaply shoot it for $.35/rnd? I know what ya mean, at the same time. It's the fact that there are common 338 bullets that will fit 8.6BLK (338 ARC) that has people going down this route. Otherwise, 9mm/.35 is also a better leap in diameter, but would it be worth the increase in bolt thrust/recoil? Gotta be the people actually taking the leaps and testing the builds to determine.

I have questions! Excellent discussion also! 8.6 solid copper vs an enging block, what happens? Has he ever tried to tighten a 556 or 308 twist rate down to 1/3 or tighter?
Better? Don’t know. Don’t have either. My point was KB was so threatened by the release of the 338 ARC he put up a video on his companies YT channel whining about it.. ironically, he is always defensive when people questioned the 300 BLK and now 8.6 BLK
he'll be in the comments on his personal account to let everyone know why a non-SAAMI spec cartridge is so much better than the one that is - and doesn't require 1/3 twist barrels.
Actually. 338 arc is the chump copy of 9x39. They share the same parent case. 8.6 blk has far more potential. Subsonic is Subsonic. But when you go super . Holy crap. Plus heavier pills in 8.6 blk makes a difference as well
That is true on the ballistics side but I think everyone is being overly skeptical. What we do know is it’s an ar platform so that right there 338 beats 8.6 for me. Now the claims that 338 arc doesn’t need an adj gas block remains to be seen

Better?
Wishful thinking.
His guns are cool, but wayyy too expensive.
A the Fix rifle/ pistol would be awesome, but not at the price it is.
338 spectre is better
Than what?
Before i start....how much of this is just shit talking the .338 arc ?
Why is every video with someone from Q come off as arrogant?
Propaganda
Can't stand Kevin's need to trash talk his competition.
Not in this video, but his response to 338 ARC is exhibit A.
338 arc is trash.
Cool. Foolish and wasteful, but cool.
chump copy of the 9x39mm
Actually. 338 arc is the chump copy of 9x39. They share the same parent case. 8.6 blk has far more potential. Subsonic is Subsonic. But when you go super . Holy crap. Plus heavier pills in 8.6 blk makes a difference as well
which nobody use
338ARC doesnt need a fuck in ar 10 and has a 30round standard capacity. 8.6BLK lost all its purpose
So it’s claimed… we’ll see.
@ what do you mean? We already now those things are facts
@@Xlanigga it’s all on paper dude. Let’s see the 338 guns and ammo in the hands of reviewers. Right now it’s all empty claims.
That is true on the ballistics side but I think everyone is being overly skeptical. What we do know is it’s an ar platform so that right there 338 beats 8.6 for me. Now the claims that 338 arc doesn’t need an adj gas block remains to be seen
338 arc 30 round magazines?
Where?
8.6 uses standard mags. 338 arc doesn't.
