Thanks for featuring this DNS solution. I’ve been looking for a review of it. You may want to edit out your mistakes and annoyances (like distracting popups) in future videos.

Will do, thank you! I try to keep things simple but I'll see that I can improve that.

YeehawItsJake, First thanks for such a great vlog... Does the Technitium DNS server need public access or we can assign a private IP and use the DNS to resolve the LAN DNS query and if any DNS query fails to resolve forward the query to some public DNS server for resolution? if the answer is Yes then can you please make one detail video on it. how to do that and love to see more scenarios and use cases of this technitium DNS server vlog from you.

Technitium should really only have LAN access, it should never be port forwarded. As for forwarding to an upstream, you'll find those settings under Settings Tab > Proxy & Forwarders, second box will have a Forwarders section. I can make a short to cover that

@@yeehawitsjake Thanks for the reply.. so suppose if I want to resolve any public domain and if technitium does not have A record of the domain t resolved locally using forwarder setting and mentioned IP address will resolve the domain .. is what you trying to say..love to see video in detail on it

    Hi Jake!
This video is a really good overview of the tool
It made me want to use it too, and at the moment, I'm using it as a Docker container. Have you ever used it that way?
On my occasion, it's running in a docker container inside a raspberry pi 4 with debian 12.
The only thing I couldn't get to work was the block page application!
The sites stop responding when I include them in the Blocked tab, however, they literally give as if it were a connection refused error, what can I be doing wrong?
    Thanks you!

Hey there! I haven't used Technitium in a container but I'm familiar with Docker at least. Have you port forwarded the containers ports to your host? That would be my first guess as the blockpage runs on port 80. Connection refused too tells me that the host has nothing running on 80 either for that interface

If this server is on the same network, just make sure you've made changes in your router to point clients at your new DNS server. This is usually under DHCP settings. The other thing to note is DNS over HTTPS will also override queries, so if you have it enabled in Firefox for example, you may run into problems

My question would be how can i set this up to be public? in short i want to resolve custom domain names that dont exist?

I would highly discourage this as DNS servers are typically used to run DDoS attacks and other exploits when not properly secured. I am not familiar inside and out with DNS and would encourage looking more into it or at least putting your DNS behind a VPN, but if you insist you can port forward from your router to your Technitium server, port 53. This will allow your WAN/Public IP to be used as a resolver for others. Many scanners and bots may use this to their advantage though
