Collecting movies is here to stay, there's going to be times where DVDs will be hot or VHS or other formats. Stores like Target and Best buy might stop selling, but those stores are dying. The real question is are thier going to continue Making good movies.
If they keep multiplying streaming services physical media will be the cheaper option and I think people are starting to get annoyed when they go to look for a movie and it’s on another platform.
It’ll just continue to evolve, the last 3 years in particular have seen some of the best releases ever. Studios and distributors have realised that the mainstream public don’t buy discs any more but they know that us collectors/curators are still out there, so their now catering towards us because they know we’ll buy if it’s available.
There have been a lot of great releases and sets I'm seeing at the moment Ben. It could be a good thing for movies that the distributors have realized the mainstream audience won't buy in shops now, their are niching down but I bet they're selling a lot more stuff that they wouldn't have sold before.
Its definitely going to slow down, as average people migrate to streaming and ditch their collections. As this changes, physical movie media will become more of a niche that caters to collectors. Studios will likely start licensing more of their catalog to boutique publishers, who will release blu-ray and 4k movies with more bonus features, upgraded video and audio and better packaging. We'll start to see them disappear from brick and mortar stores, aside from a small section they retain for new releases and low priced impulse purchases. However, as long as companies are still making players for these discs, I'm not worried. There are hundreds of thousands of movies and shows currently on DVD, tens of thousands on Blu-ray and the number of 4k titles is growing rapidly. How long have people been talking about the death of the CD, yet sales seem to be leveling out at around $500m per year. Vinyl has become the audiophile/collector's preferred format, which has been around for almost 100 years and still sold $1billion in records last year.
Fantastic video AP and a great talking point. When I first heard you ask the question about whether movie collecting would become a thing of the past, frankly I thought “I don’t really care” because I’m loving collecting movies NOW. Logically it would seem inevitable that it will come to an end eventually, but as you point out, people are still collecting vinyl, even music cassettes and VHS tapes are seeing a (small) resurgence among collectors so I don’t think collecting movies on physical media is going away any time soon. I started buying up my favourite movies on DVD about a year ago when I couldn’t find a movie I wanted to watch on various streaming services (I was paying for four different services !). But now it really has become a hobby (no, an addiction !). I’ve always been a movie lover but now I totally agree with your point about collecting. I’ve got about 500 of my favourite movies and Tv shows, mainly on DVD but also some Blu-ray. But now I find I’m wanting more than that. So now I look out for special editions, slip covers, digipacks, steelbooks. I still only keep movies I like but I now religiously visit my local charity shops each weekend and for the ridiculous price of 10 for a quid in one shop, and 5 for a quid in another, I come home with loads every week. If it’s a movie I wouldn’t watch again it goes back to the charity shop the following week. But I’ve got many movies recently that I’ve never seen before that are now permanent fixtures in my growing collection. And the thrill of finding a special edition or a movie I’ve already got but now it comes with a slip cover, well I can’t tell you how exciting that is ! I thought it was just me being old liking the ritual of taking a DVD off the shelf, opening the case, putting the disc in the machine and reading the blurb on the cover and marvelling at the artwork or the extras (much like I do with my CDs). But it’s great to see youngsters on RUclips like yourself getting the same enjoyment I do. Actually my 18 year old son thinks it’s great too, although he’s happy for me to do the collecting !
Thanks John. It's awesome that you're collecting the movies you really enjoy, I know how you feel with streaming. You can watch some decent stuff on them, but I've definitely had times where I've had a film in mind and it isn't on any of them, like yourself that's why I really like having a collection of my favourites. Collecting movies really is a fun hobby to have, and you can't go wrong with 10 for a quid bud.

It's an interesting one isn't it? Right now streaming is king in most households. But here's the thing, the costs of living are increasing dramatically, and we may see the decline of streaming services or just people decreasing the amount of streaming services they subscribe to due to costs. It could lead to a rediscovery of physical media for some people to have their favourite movies and shows on hand instead of subscriptions. Or not 🤣
Yeah, I reckon with the high cost of living, a lot of households will definitely be trimming down the subscriptions like you said Ged. It'll be interesting to see if more people start putting together a collection instead. Thanks for watching bud.
I currently collect movies from different eras, studios, directors, actors and genres. For instance I have many westerns, film noir, horror, dramas, thrillers comedies, sci-fi and action. Foreign language movies are a special treat because they often have a different aesthetic than gour average Hollywood films. Not to say that my goal. is to have everything but to have a little bit of everything.instead. I'm about 1,260 titles and counting but I'm starting to get pretty picky about what I add going forward. The cost of blurays/4k's is getting more expensive by the day so I've turned back to dvd for OOP and SD only titles as I wait for a good deal on the boutique releases. Do I still want more? Sure but it's becoming less of a priority.
I'm getting old, already 66, I figure they will still make DVDs for 10 years. At that point, with the nearly 4000 movies and TV Shows I already have, I figure I'll only last 20 years at most, I'll have enough to rewatch until I'm gone.
I used to have over 6,000 Movies in VHS. But I didn't have any TV shows. I now have a LOT of old TV Shows, many complete series. I have just gotten Seasons 2, 3, and 4 of Combat, Season 1 of Wyatt Earp, all 9 Seasons of Baywatch, all 6 of The Nanny, Season 1 of a new Amazon Zorro, and the First 3 Seasons of Death Valley Days. I also try to collect older Movies and older Stars. Recently got 3 Veronica Lake Movies. I didn't have any of hers, I also got the complete Martin and Lewis and Bob Hope and Bing Crosby Movies.
I think eventually it will die off. Younger audiences are growing in a world where the majority of what they want to watch is on one streaming service or another, so they are just never going to see the point of buying movies. It will be around for a few decades yet, but unfortunately once those of us who currently collect physical copies of movies are gone, I suspect the hobby will be go with us unfortunately. Then again 20 years ago vinyl records were seen as things of the past and they've both had a resurgence over the last decade so who knows?

I agree with you. Im a collector as well and am reaching the 1200 mark. I dont really like putting a disc in my playstation to watch a movie. I prefer it to be on my plex server so I can stream it. The only reason I collect is to preserve movies. I want to own movies not purchase a license to stream a movie online. Weve all seen how easily a service like Apple can remove a movie from their catalogue. I've been burned once before. Also the quality of disc cant be matched by streaming services.

@@fullspectrumdominanc two fine eras of movies bud, right up my street 👍
@@TheMovieCheerPodcast only problem I’ve run out of classics to collect unless I want to upgrade to 4K as they come out but it’s not all roses like T2 4K 😂
I didn't realize it at first, but all the movies i was collecting were from around 2015 and earlier.......Hollywood just isn't putting and good movies out anymore.
Collecting movies is already a thing of the past. I had hundreds of dvds that I couldn’t give away. Nobody wants dvds anymore. I can’t remember the last time I actually went to my dvd player and popped in a dvd. I don’t even have a dvd player hooked up to my tv. I’m not putting down collecting movies I mean buy what you want. But I think it’s a outdated format like records.
I totally respect your view Jimmy. Do you ever see yourself collecting again, maybe 4k? or do you think you are ALL-IN on streaming now for good?
I agree with you. Im a collector as well and am reaching the 1200 mark. I dont really like putting a disc in my playstation to watch a movie. I prefer it to be on my plex server so I can stream it. The only reason I collect is to preserve movies. I want to own movies not purchase a license to stream a movie online. Weve all seen how easily a service like Apple can remove a movie from their catalogue. I've been burned once before. Also the quality of disc cant be matched by streaming services.
That's it bud, disc quality for the time being is hard to be topped in comparison to streaming. Thanks for watching.
