Not exactly. They are a subsidiary of NBA and the NBA has been absorbing their yearly business "losses" since it's inception, yes. The WNBA took a $75 million dollar "infusion of capital" to boost the overall brand of the WNBA 2 years ago and the way to "pay it back" is from TV dollars that they can try to get only because you have more interest due to CC ironically. No one wants to see Aja, Breanna, Phee, etc. all around the World, but people want to see a player in CC who is literally the closest thing to a male star in Steph along with that "it" factor....yet these same "stars" hate her for dumb reasons which means they are forever going to be a product of the men's money and these women are so ignorant and arrogant they don't see it and the WNBA could cease to exist based on that fact.

There is more to being a professional basketball player than knowing how to play basketball. A PRO knows sportsmanship, teamwork, and has been properly trained on how to speak to the media. A PRO player understands what a rivalry is in regards to hyping up fans and generating excitement. I rivalry isn't about hate or being thuggish. It's all about the polished presentation to the customers (fans). Basketball is just one facet of a PRO player. This season has demonstrated that the majority of the current talent in the WNBA is not at the PRO level.

The WNBA (executives, coaches, players) does numerous things that actively works against increased viewership and attendence. It has done its best to not capitalize on the attention Clark has brought with the exception of scheduling the Fever's first 11 games in a 20 day span. The bottom line is the players can't get higher salaries if the league doesn't have the money. Asking the NBA and team owners to pony up more money is not the solution either. Maybe some of the players need to take an economics course along with improving their skills and learning how to act professionally.

Even back then, they thought they should be able to compete with a completely different entity called the NBA… but they seem to forget it also had its struggles and several other leagues came and went….. Since I just started watching this year, at first I thought it wasn't right that the WNBA players weren't paid like the NBA players. But after watching this season, the NBA games are on a whole other level from the WNBA. For better or worse the NBA games bring in a ton of revenue that the WNBA just doesn't match. I agree with you Izzy, that the WNBA teams need to be getting many more sold out games beyond what CC is bringing to the table.

The nba probably didn't bleed money at year 25 like the wnba, and I doubt any of them got high salaries even if the money calculations is lower in that generation. Also note, the wnba do not play 82 games, or has that many teams like NBA. They get paid pretty well for a few months per year? Like 50 to 200k for 3 months of work? Just get a regular job outside of those 3 months. Also who are they going to leverage? Lock out what? People only just started to watch their game because of CC. Lock out now, and everyone will just say okay, guess time to let go of WNBA for good or something.

There's one thing not mentioned here that really inhibits the WNBA. Besides the NBA owning 44%. There is another consortium that owns another 24%. They sold off that part of the league for 75 million dollars. Even with a new TV deal in 2026 and higher viewership/attendance they won't be able to get a big enough piece of the pie. You're right that there are more viewers and attendees at Clark's games. However there is still an uptick in viewership overall.

I think $150k is probably a good salary for a part-time job. But what they could do is increase the revenue shares. Everyone needs to learn from the MLB strike in 1994. A lot of people never watched America's Pastime again.

This is a league no one really cared about for 27 years and they want to make salaries commiserate to the NBA which has been around for 70 years. They're highest Paid players make around 200k in 1980 Larry bird made 180k. aside from the fact that Bird was more interesting to watch then Angel Reese shooting a ball over the backboard from 2ft away , what are these women complaining about? I hope they strike no one would support them or be devastated if they aren't around

Quick math. 12 teams 10 players x half million avg salary = 60 million. 50/50 split with owners means the league would need to eat 120 million. The league loses money still.

I don’t know what that guy is talking about but he doesn’t understand economics. There wont be a lock out & those million dollar salaries are coming regardless if they want to pay them or not because they are going to have to pay CC when her rookie deal is over in two years. And she’s worth way more than damn million dollars 😂😂 it’s a new day those guys are living in the past.
CC is easily generating over 50 million in game ticket sales revenu home & away. Look at a simple example game ticket is $100 per ticket which we know in reality is way less for a CC game. Attendance 17,000 x $100= 1.7 million. Thats 34 million + for 20 games at Gainbridge & it doesn’t include any merchandise & concessions sales.
I don’t even need to show the new TV money which will quadruple the current deal once the final contracts are negotiated with ION & CBS.
Even with just one superstar CC the league is making money now especially the Fever. I project they have made over a 40 million in revenue this year. So, you think they are only going to pay CC 1 million? 😂
The other teams will make 2 million + or 1.5 million for 2 Fever games per year. So Cc alone is enough for now but they need more players to attract mo The fans because they have on redundancy if CC gets hurt.
I don’t know how they are going word the new CBA but they are going to have to word it so they can pay CC a multi million dollar deal even if they don’t want to pay the others.
CC is a billion dollar sales generating athlete & they are going to have to pay her real worth which in reality is more the NBA players salary because of the revenue she’s generating for the League ii’s astonishing for only 1 player. And they hate her 🤷‍♂️😂

Regarding player salaries in the NBA versus salaries in the WNBA: You women want to be paid like them? You need to play like them. Make your bunnies (layups). Make your gimmes (free throws). Nail your passes. Make us want to watch. Spend less time fussing with your hair and more time delivering on the court.

"The league: a clear example of how activism can ruin even the simplest sport. Jealousy, racism and political agendas: the perfect recipe for failure. Who wants to watch women's basketball when there is so much social injustice to denounce? Brands invest , but the public prefers to stay at home watching TikTok. And when a savior appears, the others attack her with the same ferocity as a pack of hyenas. The league, a business as profitable as an iceberg: on the verge of sinking for decades. And the worst thing is that the same players celebrate their own shipwreck!"

I think... IF the highest paid player in wnba is earning 300K per year, for me the most logical increase they can get is 50% of it. Meaning is from 300k it will be 450k. And if clark is earning 65-75K new rookie contract will be 100-115k.. and for me that's fair enough..
I mean, only Clark has the right to have higher contract since she can return the investment and make revenue.

The WBA has so many problems beyond lack of fundamentals. They have horrible officiating that makes it seem like games are fixed to favor certain teams. Apparently there is rampant racism in the stands that is somehow being missed by audio & video recording devices. Players are being stalked & receiving death threats & this is apparently being swept under the rug because it's not being reported to law enforcement

  • @TheMartin9400

Instead of adding more teams to the league the WNBA needs either contraction or to relegate teams to a 2nd division like they do in professional soccer all over the world. Adding new teams only waters down the talent pool even more

So let me understand. The players want more money, as in 5x-8x more. They have a Golden Goose in Caitlin Clark that could pump millions of dollars into the league including towards salaries. So they could either allow Clark to be the face of the league and draw in viewers in numbers the league could only dream of, or shun her and perform a lock out... The first solution is guaranteed money in the millions and the other solution could possibly end with players losing money.

  • @maryruthgaw8532

27 years x 50,000,000 = 1,350,000,000 that the NBA has paid into the WNBA. (I am guessing that they paid this amount every year as I don't know the exact number of every single year.) Now I am sure the NBA didn't just GIVE them the money and not expect it to be paid back (I am sure over a period of time) so can the WNBA just pay that back in one lump sum? Every one takes a cut from the money you make and by the time it gets down to paying the players there isn't much left to divide up amongst them hence the low salaries. It won't be good if they go through with this lockout expecting more money because it will fold the league faster than a lawn chair. One good or eve great year isn't going to balance the books when it comes to something that has been loosing money for decades it needs time to get the red back to black ink and it needs much more money to accomplish that. There are teams that still only play in 10,000 seat arenas and do not sell them out, that isn't enough to pay players millions. With CC in the league and what it is doing is a very good start, but it's only a start.
One thing I don't think these women understand is you need star power to propel your league and it needs to happen over a long period of time to get that type of money, CC has this league on a great trajectory but she can't do it alone. The NBA has had to do the same exact thing in the 70's it was almost folded because NOBODY was watching it and games were on tape delay to play AFTER regular programing late at night. Bring in two amazing players from college (Bird and Johnson) and you brought the fans with them that launched the league in a profitable direction but it still took time to get people making millions of dollars it wasn't just after the first year. Magic's rookie salary was 460,000 per year while Bird was 650,000 per year. The league salary in 1979 when both them joined was 173,500 average and that was after 30 years since the beginning of the league, it takes time to build something like this.
The NBA generated 10.58 billion last year with 30 teams and playing 82 games while the WNBA does about 200 million with 12 teams playing 40 games, the numbers for trying to demand million dollar salaries isn't there and won't be for a while and that is ONLY if they get more star power in the league to drive up revenue.
