Very cool. For your next video, however, I'd suggest making it longer, and instead of music let us hear the carving and let the carvers explain as they does it. There are numerous examples on RUclips of traditional Japanese craftsmen doing so. Of course translating this would take longer, but it would make the video better I think. Also, (to explain another comment that was complaining about it) the pronunciation of Japanese words in this video was a little poor... might want to improve that.
It sounds silly, but I've never even thought about drawing what I'm going to carve onto the wood first. I usually use random pieces of wood fallen from trees, or offcuts from projects. . . I have, and often use my planer and jointer, so I have no excuse really, just never thought of it.
If you’re talking about balsa wood (which is really foamy, but is still wood), then usually at your local hardware store in the craft-type section. At least that’s in AU and the US (not sure where you’re from). Depends on the dimensions you need. Googling balsa wood near you should do the trick
Nice, great work. Never really carved wood just stone I use two colors for mine usually a blue and red to mark my lines the blue is my safe line and red is the actual line ,learned from being too inpatient that I cant put back once it's gone so once I get to the blue it's time to take my time.
@@WoodworkingEnthusiasts I try to do all kinds of stuff . Got into cabbing so I can further my knowledge of stones and polishing. You ever try that with stone? Around here there alot of kachina carvers or in the native art world Anyway, they tend to use cottonwood roots if I do some stuff in wood I'll prolly go with some harder stuff like cedar or juniper.
Superglue works if you can find the part you didn't mean to cut off. That's my problem. A lot of times, I can't find the part I didn't mean to cut off among the rest of the wood I already carved off. But, if you can manage to salvage that piece, superglue does wonders.
@@WoodworkingEnthusiasts I just learned about Jiso from a friends page on FB- she lost her baby after a little over a month postpartum, and someone posted about the way of mourning the loss of a child due to miscarriage and infant death. A sweet, sad, touching way to mourn.

Its hard for me to consider these religious carvers "artists". This is more of a factory producing a product. I feel the same about those Italian "artists" that just carve Jesus. If I just carved Abraham Lincoln 10,000 times Am I a sculptor or a reproducer, or just a factory?
I would have liked to see more of the finer carving. It was just rough shaping...and then a cut, and suddenly the figure was ready.
Great Point!!

Good advice Dave! many viewers have mentioned what you did. I appreciate that and will try my best to make my videos better. Thanks for your time!
Here in New Zealand the Maori wood carvers never blow shavings off the carving. They believe it brings bad Mana (luck)
Thank you, I have just started carving and I have learned a lot from this video. One thing is to use a pencil more😂
Glad it was helpful!

What is the best way to sharpen small tools?
We use Japanese water stones for sharpening small tools...
Nice video
Though I totally winced when I saw him carving toward his hand
How do you make or print the Buddha template to get started? Is there a trick to making a template from front and side views?
the sketch was created based on the experience of a Daibusshi...
What is the name of the chisels he uses? The long handled ones with short blades? Thanks and great videos
just do a google search for "skew chisel"
Is that a kiridashi knife he's using?
yes, among the knives he used was a kiridashi knife
Can anyone tell what's playing in the background from 2:57?
I was wondering why this was only 10 minutes long.
Sorry for Not making well..
They want u to buy
Not to make it
It is a secret
His tools are nice. . . All my were made from old chisels, saw blades, and other scrap metal.
glad you enjoyed it!
❤❤❤🎉🎉
Красиво ! 👍🙏
The trouble with wood carving is you can cut it off but you can’t put it back...
You can cut out a square chunk glue in another piece and fix it though.
Michael Keeter
You don’t glue-....
The more trouble is when they said the sculpture is god, people do believe as well😂
@@MichaelKeeter yes...someone do that with tuttankamon

Is anyone else's vid still blurry as hell at 1080p? I feel like I'm going blind and it's giving me a headache.
so sorry about that, just relax!!
Where can I buy one of the sculptures? The link posted takes me to a Japanese website and I do not speak/read the lingo.
Voice over needs some education on pronunciation
why is it out of focus?
I'm very interested in the task but for my eyes it is horrible.
shame on me, feel bad for editing on this video...
@@WoodworkingEnthusiasts don't worry - if it is possible to take care for the next time, it would be great
I enjoyed watching anyway. ^-^
BOY THEM PAGANS SURE ARE TALENTED
Is it a Jizo doll?
Yes, How do you know that? He carved Jizo Bosatsu, a divinity in Japanese Buddhism who protects children who have died before their parents.
@@WoodworkingEnthusiasts I just learned about Jiso from a friends page on FB- she lost her baby after a little over a month postpartum, and someone posted about the way of mourning the loss of a child due to miscarriage and infant death. A sweet, sad, touching way to mourn.
The filming quality is a little low. Try to use more the focus!
sorry for the hassle
Come to srilanka
This could have been such a great ASMR video 😭
What!?!? Too many cuts; one moment it was a square block, and the next it was a round head.
Sorry for the bad editing on this video, I'll do better next time!!
Instead of using DIY carbon paper to transfer the pencil sketch to the block of wood, why not just draw directly onto the wood?
Drawing out the paper will be easier to change

I want to have a Buddha statue and pray to the statue every day.
Holy bad music Batman!
sorry for my bad...
@@WoodworkingEnthusiasts I thought the music was fine.

Buddha was not japanese by face cut 🤣
He was India by ethnicity & Indians have big eyes.
Jesus wasn’t blonde with blue eyes either. Does it matter?

You are a sculptor.
Very poor image quality
Video de mierda lo veo en 1080p y aun se ve horrible y la música nada que ver.
