    Love seeing the younger generation take on their fathers tradition. Given time the son may overtake the father in his abilities. Lovely work son. 👍🏻🇦🇺😁

    I love this channel and all the different things that are made. I like seeing the traditional ways and the importance of adhering to them for this people. I appreciate how hard they work to accomplish this. And also what I can learn from them. Thank you so much for showing us.

    I have attempted this over the years, and only get so far with the two chisels and tiny blade I have, with no guidance or technique.
    But now I literally have everything I need by watching this a couple times.
    Thank you all for spreading this wealth of knowledge. I'll definitly be back to mask making once I get a chunk of wood!

    He should use a bench of something to hold the mask while doing the ''heavy'' carving. The force he uses is actually absorbed by his body, making his blows less effective and wasting alot of effort.

    • @charliebowen5071
      @charliebowen5071 4 года назад +5

      AstralJokers you are completely wrong!! The Japanese do not use benches. The workpiece is braced against the studding of the floor. No force is absorbed by his body. It’s been done this way longer than benches have existed.. benches are a western modern concept....

    • @charliebowen5071
      @charliebowen5071 4 года назад +1

      The part rating on his lap is to test the rigidity or density of the particular piece of timber.

    • @AstralJokers
      @AstralJokers 4 года назад +8

      @@charliebowen5071 You may try to believe w/e things you want to believe, physics don't care about your beliefs. You can see him clearly sweating and you can see the piece swinging around on his body. It's not braced. The way he's crouched means he's killing his back. I don't care where he is from, his form is bad and he suffers for it. Those are simple facts.

      @@AstralJokers Agree with you, the carvers in the philippines, indonesia and malaysia sit on the floor but place the wood on the ground or a small carving rack near the ground. The volume of carving these countries do is much more that that coming out of japan.

    There are so many beautiful places on this earth, it's pitiful all the bad ,regulations we the PEOPLE have to endure ,cant do this or go there, well at least I got to see some places when I got drafted 🤗🖖🖖

      @stauffap 4 года назад

      Not at all well said. We need the regulations to protect and preserve beautifull places. There are a lot of people, who have no respect for such places. They'll leave their garbage there, they destroy things, they'll try to buy and exploit the landscape, take natural resources to make money etc.
      The world is going downhill so fast that we need more regulations and not less and we need to teach respect for the beauty and fragility of this planet.

    • @TheHeroRobertELee

      No way. The masters is FAR FAR superior. Thats not an opinion. The chin line is crooked on Shogos and the right eye and brow is raised and off center. The masters however is perfectly symmetrical.

      Although good Symmetry makes a face look good, perfect Symmetry makes it look creepy.
      His style with sharp edges adds more definition and overall appeal.
      As an artist or a musician, anytime you create something perfect (shape, sound) on a computer, breaking some Symmetry helps create something that is more pleasing to a human being.
      I take aesthetics over perfection any day. 😎

    面打ちについて思い出す二つの話し。
    1. 夏目漱石の随筆・・・面を彫るのではない、木の中に既にある面を彫り出すのだ。
    2. 修善寺物語・・・源頼家の面を彫っている人が『どうやっても死に面になる』と言ったが果たして、間もなく頼家は暗殺された。
    実は人はみなそれぞれ自作の面をつけて生きている。これをペルソナと言う。
