Now better than Tesla Model 3? 2024 Polestar 2 review: Updated electric car vastly improves EV game!

  • The 2024 Polestar 2 is here and out to prove that it is, indeed, better than the all-conquering Tesla Model 3. Yes, mid-size sedans might not be so popular these days, but they're having a resurgence of sorts thanks to new all-electric models, which are rapidly improving on most fronts. Case in point: the facelifted Polestar 2.
    Compare the updated Polestar 2 to its predecessor on paper and it's clear that the series has come leads and bounds in half a generation, with front-wheel-drive versions replaced by more powerful and dynamic rear-wheel-drive variants, and driving range significantly increased via new battery technology.
    In this expert review, CarsGuide Senior Journalist Tom White puts the new Polestar 2 through its paces at its Australian media launch, to find out if it really does now have what it takes to eclipse the Model 3 as an overall package and, therefore, maybe even a sales leader.

    So excited I just last night got the VIN for my LRSM that's now been built and is due at Polestar Adelaide in a few weeks! This is my dream car for sure!

      Don't get excited - only suboptimal NMC (nickel-manganese-cobalt) battery offered; NMC battery's life time span is 3-4x less than Li-Phophate batteries. How come the reviewer "forgot" to mention this?

    Thank you for the review, great content. I have some acquaintances who just received the new 2024 Polestar 2, and they are thrilled with it, whether it's in Jupiter or Blue color. They absolutely love it. And, most importantly, what is everyone talking about with this car? lol As for me, I'm waiting to be able to test and potentially order either the Polestar 3 or 4.

    Its a fail for me, an extra $3000 to upgrade to the pack with adaptive cruise control and a staggering extra $6000 for the pack with the heat pack. Adaptive cruise control and the heat pump should be standard. No LFP batteries is a big disappointment for me, nice looking car so it's a shame. Just my opinion.

      Yeh something this e-VOLVO-ed (sorry) should have ACC at this price. My Pajero Sport cost me $38k 4 years ago and it came as standard. Still a v nice EV.

      Wdym? Pilot pack is only $2k and $2,200 for the plus pack. Which is definitely more than worth it.

    • @christianolsen9781
      @christianolsen9781 10 месяцев назад

      But those packs has quite a lot more content than just ACC and heat pump - premium sound, pixel LEDs, glas roof and a long list of other stuff. And most if it is actually stuff you would like (contrary to BMW and other premiums that seem to pack the essentials with a lot of stuff you dont need)

    • @oscara8111
      @oscara8111 10 месяцев назад

      @@christianolsen9781 true then let those features be part of the upgrade and not adaptive cruise and heat pump

    Comparing Tesla to Polestar is comparing apples to oranges; I like both cars but despite the similarities they see themselves as different. Polestar see themselves as a niche luxury brand so they are always going to be expensive and produced in limited numbers. Tesla aspires to be a mass market brand (like Ford or Toyota) and want to maximise production and bring their prices lower.

      Agreed Tesla is simply not a premium brand

    You’re saying that it’s 17.2 kWh/100km for LR DM. How is that such an improvement, as Polestar claims for new 2024 model?. I see they have bigger battery comparing to 2023 model with only 4 kWh more. I am an owner of the 2023 model in which I am on 18.9 kWh avg and I live where the conditions are similar to UK. That puts me into the thought that it can’t be too much difference in battery then. The other question is how efficiently did you drive this car to come up with 17.2 kWh difference. I love that car, so that comment it is just for a debate as my curiosity towards 2024 model.

    • @morri03
      @morri03 10 месяцев назад

      You have to look at the official WLTP efficiency numbers which show an improvement over the old model. You can’t compare to your personal consumption as everyone’s temperature, roads, use case, highway vs urban mix etc are different. Bottom line new ones are more efficient and have slightly larger batteries in some models.

    For a Chinese car , most of the items in the add on packs should be standard, in other words your being ripped off for a brand name .

  • @shanea9613
    @shanea9613 Год назад +3

    The Chinese are really great at manufacturing. No active cruise standard is surprising. Sounds like a money grab by Polestar. I had the fwd as a hire car for about a week. And i loved it. The range was not near what was advertised but the trip computer was very accurate with the realistic range.

    It's far too expensive for the base model. A RWD with adaptive cruise control costs $74,452 (drive away) in NSW and is over the NSW EV rebate threshold so no rebate. A base model Tesla RWD is $60,314 but it's easy to apply a $750 referral that brings that to $59,564, also it's below the NSW EV rebate cap to another $3000 that's effectively $56,564 drive away.
    Comparing the base models like for like the Polestar is $17,888 more expensive. Not only is the Polestar not an $18k better car than the base model Tesla it's not a better car at all even if it was the same price, it's heavier, it's slower, has a much poorer user interface with fewer features, is less efficient, has poorer seating / cabin layout, is built on an ICE platform with a huge transmission tunnel, will get less range real world, has a NMC battery which needs to be managed between 80-20% charge on a daily basis (Telsa's base LFP can be charged regularly to 100%), and despite the hatch configuration has less usable storage than a model 3, does not drive or handle any better, has no better build quality than the Shanghai built model 3, and we haven't even got to the charger network yet.
    There will be a handful of buyers that just want something that is not a Tesla and want a more familiar ICE-like cabin layout but they are paying a huge premium for an inferior product.

      It’s a better car. Anyway, Polestar 4 when it comes will also be better than model Y. They’re just in different classes. Tesla strives to be a mass market like Toyota. Polestar is quality and sophistication with all its unique material choices. The tactile feel of everything is so solid

    I love the look. But poor packaging was the reason I stuck with Tesla. With its fully electric interior and heated seats allround. Also for the money they’re asking the Polestar is too pokey inside. No adaptive cruise, Poor efficiency.

      Fully agree. It is the one sticking point that probably stops me from buying. I dont think I should pay $3500 extra for a feature that the car already has, but they have just switched off on the software. I am keeping my eye out to see what the BYD Seal is offering!

    I bought a polestar 2. 3 weeks later it lost 5000€...
    I'd say it's the car of the 90s farmer. It's solid, but otherwise it's not that great.
    The pluses :
    - quiet up to 90 km/h
    - it has controls
    - the interface is practical and fluid
    - torquey engine
    - it's not a tesla
    Minuses
    - it's not super comfortable, and not super incisive
    - much less efficient than the tesla
    - little storage space
    - rear seats for children
    - no car parking (crazy eh)
    - opening the boot with your foot works one time out of 2
    - the 3D camera is useless
    - the adaptive cruise control makes you puke
    - the polestar app is ultra slow
    Clearly, my next car won't be a Polestar.

    How on Earth can you compare to Tesla Model 3 when it does not have at the very least the software and technology and let alone the charging infrastructure? Aren't you ashamed of yourself to compare to Tesla? Do not even try to compare anything to Tesla you are shaming the other cars.... Oh I almost forgot to compare the price

    Polestars are no better than Volvos means Polestar 2 is an electric sedan with liftback trunk and Sport Utility Vehicle suspension. Then go take the bus🚌 made by Volvo or go back and find an ancient trolleybus🚎rides under tram cables with cheap electricity and so-called zero emission than battery electric buses.
