Thanks, it really reminds me the Westerscheldetunnel in the Nederlands exept for the two-way tunnel, two-way seems a lot cheaper than two tunnels. Westerschelde was a lot more expensive, till today it is a toll road. Also thanks for the music. Greetings.

The tunnel loses it's claim as the worlds deepest undersea road tunnel next year when "Ryfast" opens from Stavanger under Gandsfjord (this will also be the worlds longest subsea road tunnel on opening, 14.3km longest tunnel section and 290m depth) but that will again be passed when "Rogfast" opens a few years later.
Yup it’s just a normal Neon light but there’s way more to Norway than this. Try glacier hiking etc also you’ve got cave tunnels where you will see roundabouts and shit loads of Neon lights 😅
Dunno if anyone else feels like this, but tunnels with steep slopes feel more claustrophobic to me. You feel like you're descending into oblivion, never to return!
I think it's cool, like a mine you can drive through. I would totally drive through a gold mine or a deep salt mine, given the chance, as long as rain wasn't in the forecast.
I'm so glad I discovered your videos! I can watch safely at home great roads, beautiful landscapes and tunnels like this one! Thanks a lot! :) I also like the song so much! Are you driving by car?
One thing I don't understand though, is why they didn't make this tunnel 3 lanes. Like the Bømlafjord tunnel, which is Norway's ( and the world's) second deepest, at 263 m. That one has one lane inbound, while two outbound, letting people overtake slow moving trucks, etc.
It will depend on the expected traffic flow. If the flow is sufficiently low that overtaking using the oncoming lane is safe, then the 3rd lane simply adds cost with little extra benefit. I'll agree it's preferable, but adds a huge amount on cost if not needed.
Overtaking a truck in the oncoming lane on a 8% grade uphill with the typical norwegian car/engine combo (1,6 115hk diesel on a 1,6ton station wagon) is not safe regardless of traffic amount IMO. Its just typical penny pinching from Vegvesen and politicians , same reason why we still don't have a decent road connecting any cities, and tons of stupid compromises done in road constructions, like 2 lane roads with center divider but no overtaking lane for 10-15 or more km, motorway exits where the right most lane suddenly becomes the exit (incentivizeing left lane hogging), etc..
Glenni Hey i am norwegian and i know why, belive me. IT'S BECAUSE NORWAY IS STUPID! AND I'M NOT BEING SARCASTIC!! ALMOST NO ROADS IN NORWAY HAVE 3 LANES!! I'M TELLING YOU! NORWAY IS STUPID! EVEN THOUGH I'M NORWEGIAN MYSELF!
The fjords are very deep so bridges are often not an option, or very expensive. In this case the minimum span needed would be longer than the world's longest suspension bridge. As you can see the 1 billion NOK / $ 120 million figure is quite low for this tunnel and the other tunnels and bridge on this link.
We're trying to plan for crossings such as the Sognefjord crossing, which will be well over, 3 km wide, if we can build a bridge, we'll build a bridge, if we can build a tunnel, we can build a tunnel, but it'll have to be floating and anchored. the sognefjord is well over 900m deep. We don't even know how deep some of the other fjords are. That's the kind of mysteries we need to deal with in Norway.
Sognefjord is 1000 meters deep and 4 km wide. A suspension bridge would need 500 meters tall towers (or more), more than twice that of the Golden Gate.
Wow! Scary tunnel, not for me. The cost was 110 millions euros only ? For that kind of money union companies built only 5 miles of regular road in Illinois.
This tunnel is built by Norwegian union workers. US unions are not like labor unions elsewhere. In Norway, the unions are anchored to the labor party and are organized in a national union of unions. The unions are a big force in Norwegian politics and have none of the bullshit seen with US unions.
AFAIK if this where build today they would make it a dual tube with escape tunnels connecting them every so many meters. Norwegian road administration did a lot of weird(sometimes dangerous) compromises when designing new roads until very recently, they have gotten much better in recent years i feel.
We had to pay when it did open, but ppl was using more then they did belived, so they paid down the tunnel in 8 years. So its free now for driving through

Thank you for sharing Norwegian roads are fascinating
They are shitty as hell and VERY insecure! It’s a deathwish driving on these roads, still the government wont build new highways
Great tunnel, and great video! The tunnels are my favorite!
Absolutely fantastic scenery! And cool tunnel
Great video, thanks for sharing!
Beautiful views
Wish I knew of that tunnel before my vacation. But at least I drove through the North Cape Tunnel, which is one of the longest in Norway.
The North Cape Tunnel is 6.9 km long. However, Norway also has the Lærdal Tunnel which is no less than 24.5 kilometers long.
Well, guess I will have to go back to Norway one day. :)
It was pretty long, though. And so steep! It was quite something to climb it going 80km/h in 3rd gear, haha.
A 8% grade in a tunnel really is quite something. It seems it would be pretty easy to get going pretty fast after such a long descent.
There was a terrible accident some years ago. 8 % is actually too steep and difficult for Heavy trucks
I don't think 8 % would be allowed with to day, i Norway/EU. So it would either be longer or not at all.

IS it my impression of even the excavated rest areas in the tunnel don't have a fire/smoke safe room?
They do usually contain small fire safe rooms, with an emergency telephone, bu they're not very big, and they usually don't lead to any escape routes.
Escape routes under a fjord might be a challenge . . open the hatch and flood the tunnel . . well it would put out any fire I guess.
AFAIK if this where build today they would make it a dual tube with escape tunnels connecting them every so many meters. Norwegian road administration did a lot of weird(sometimes dangerous) compromises when designing new roads until very recently, they have gotten much better in recent years i feel.

Is it free or do you have to pay for it ?
It was a toll road until 2014. It became toll-free once the debt was paid off, which was 9 years ahead of schedule.
