Level Right. It’s Important • Get Rid of Those Bad Habits

- Getting a perfect or near perfect level EVERY TIME is easy-IF-you level side-to-side first.
Maintenance of leveling jacks
1) I change out hydraulic fluid in the reservoir every 2 or 3 yrs. It’s a PM item. It will remove condensation that can accumulate in the reservoir and in the entire system. Contaminated or old fluid will affect the performance of your leveling jacks. I’ve done a video on how to do this PM item.
2) I wipe down my chrome jack cylinders with my 3M dry lube and paper towels before I ever retract them. I do this to prevent pitting and also dirt that can damage the wiper seal over time. If I’m parked for long periods of time, I do it this a month while they’re extended. If your parked in an area like the coast or beach, doing this once a week will protect them from salt damage.
3) I grease my chassis once a year and while I’m at it, I give the zerk fittings 1 shot-no more-of my same chassis grease in all 4 jacks wiper seal. This keeps the wiper seals in top shape. I’ve done a complete video on how to grease your chassis yourself
4) Once a year when I do all my winter maintenance, I get under the coach and clean and use a protectant on all the leveling electrical connections
5) During the winter when in colder climates your hydraulic jacks may work a little slower than in the summer months b/c the fluid can thicken
Summary and final thoughts:
1) Concerning Snap pads, I see this question asked a lot. Personally, I don’t like them and I think they are a waste of money. And there not cheap. I know people buy them b/c they give the jack pad a larger footprint. The problem is they don’t address the length of extending or over extending the leveling jacks. You still should be putting blocking under your pads to prevent this and that also gives you the larger foot print your looking for. In my book everyone needs to put some type of blocking under their leveling jacks to keep the distance of the leveling jacks small. Doing this offers better stability and prevent the retraction springs in good health. So there’s no need for Snap Pads.
2) Having a perfect or near perfect level is not only good for the RV and makes living in the RV a lot nicer, but it’s also good for your slides, your chassis and especially your absorption fridge if you have one.
3) When leveling a motorhome never bring the rear wheels off the ground. That is where your emergency brake is. And even though you’ve seen people raise their front wheels off the ground with their leveling jacks it’s a horrible habit to practice for all the reasons I mentioned and shouldn’t be done. Leveling jacks are not LIFTING JACKS…they are leveling jacks. Leveling jacks are to be used for fine tuning to get level.
4) I highly encourage you to have blocking like I have or something similar, wood and anything else you might need to level your RV properly and to support your steps. Keep it all in one place so it’s easy to find. Everything I carry is my Amazon Store if you’re interested.
5) When were parked in the spring or summer when we run the A/C a lot, I’ll normally level the RV just slightly forward and to the drivers side so that the water from the A/C unit will drain to the front drivers side corner and down the hose I attached there so that water will drain to the ground and not run down my window or splash up on my tires.

Thank you for this video. This is the EXACT opposite of what the RV dealer taught me
Martin taught me so much about my RV. Thank you for keeping his memory alive.
Joanie, so very sorry for your loss. Yours were the very first rv-related videos I found and watched online. I learned so much from both of you. It is heartbreaking to hear of his passing. Praying comfort and peace for you.

I’m
Heart broken to see Martin has passed. We have been watching your channel and tonight I went to your channel and saw the cancer up date video. Seeing this is the last video and reading comments I see he has passed. I’m so very sorry.
Thank you 💔
I'm fairly new to RV life and have wondered how to make my leveling easier and more efficient. I got some great ideas from this video! I'm sorry Martin is no longer with us and sorry Joni, for your loss. God Bless!
Thank you for watching our videos and I'm glad it was helpful. Thank you also for your kind words.
Hi Joanie, my husband and I just purchased an RV, vista, a few months ago. I’ve been trying to learn about the RV and finally found your RUclips channel and excellent information. I’m so sad to learn about Martin. My husband unfortunately is dealing with his cancer and the RV is on his bucket list. So thank you for helping me help him, so much to learn from Martin and so grateful to see your videos.
Thank you so much for your comment. Martin loved helping people and he would be thrilled to know he is still helping.
I find Martin's voice comforting and reassuring. No doubt he forgot more than most "experts" ever knew about RVing! He and the RV Doctor Gary Bunzer were unequalled and are sorely missed. Thinking of you, Joanie! Blessings.
Thank you Joanie for continuing to share Martin's wisdom. You're still in my prayers 🙏
I am so sorry for your loss Joni. Thank you for keeping Martin present here to educate all of us in RV maintenance! His videos are among the best out there!
Thank you so much
Joanie, I hadn't been on RUclips for a while. I was surprised to see Martin had passed away. He was one who would take the time to walk you through what the video was about and, in detail make sure you understood, how to do it right. I extend my prayers and sympathy to you and family Joanie.
Martin lost his battle with cancer a year ago. I was and still am heartbroken but he is no longer in pain and is the loving arms of God. Thank you for reaching out to me. ♥️

Thank you for reaching out to me and subscribing. Martin had a passion for helping people and saving them money by teaching them how to do things and not having to pay a RV tech.

Martin, you were a pearl, an asset! Thank you so much. And Joani, the term is "happy wife, happy life". Love ❤
Martin was an outstanding teacher and this is just one of many examples of his abilities to simplify a concept that many of us don't do correctly. Thanks for continuing to post his remaining videos, I am sure this is not easy for you.
I loved watching this man's videos. He had such a great spirit and a wealth of knowledge. I only wish I was half the man he was. Sorry for your loss. It was everyone's loss when he passed.
Thank you so much.
Joanie, I echo many other subscribers thoughts, first praying for you and second thank you for allowing us to continue learning from Martin’s wisdom.
Just today I found out about Martins passing. I am so sorry for your loss. You both have been on my mind. My husband and I want to go out and about in our motorhome like you and your husband did. My husband is a bit slow to come around to selling our home to go. But he is 80 now and I am 12 years younger and I am a cancer survivor and you never know if it will come back. I want to go while we still can. Martin was a wealth of information. Thanks for still sharing with us all. My prayers go out to you. May our load keep you safe for your time here with us. Your delivery makes this as good as it gets, thx man

Joanie, I found your channel a few of months ago and this remains one of my top resources for maintaining my RV. Martin's creativity, clarity, and attention to detail in these videos is outstanding. I am very sorry for your loss, but wanted to let you know that there are many of us out here that are very grateful for both of your contributions. P.S.: I have yet to have found anyone that quite rocks the headband like Martin did. 🙂
Thank you so much for your kind words and I totally agree about the headband.🤣👍

Thank you so much for reaching out to me. I am doing ok but I will say that holidays are very difficult for me. Thankfully I have a lot of great friends and family to help me through these times.
Joni, I am so sorry to find out that you, your family and the RV community that follow Martin's and your channel have lost such a wonderful, knowledgeable and giving man. I pray that you are doing as good as possible and get better every day. Every time I do any work I have Martin to thank in getting the job done right. I learned so much from his videos and refer to them often. Prayers to you and yours and stay strong. Love to you and continue on with your dreams. I am sure he is with you in spirit.
Thank you so much for reaching out to me. I am doing ok. It helps a lot knowing I can see Martin and hear his voice by watching a video. I miss him horribly.
You are very welcome Joni. I totally understand how you feel. I too lost my wife of 43 years in 2016. It was 2 years after I retired. We got to travel in our RV for a short time before cancer struck her down inside of 90 days. I am doing much much better now and she is always with me in spirit. Believe me it will get better and it will take time for you to feel even close to normal again but it will eventually happen. Before she passed away she told me to not stop living my life and that it must go on. So in closing "Be Well" my friend and you are in my prayers. I too miss Martin but we still have his great videos that I still rewatch often just so I don't miss anything that I constantly seem to forget about at my age. Thanks Again

Prayers for you dealing with the huge challenges. Martin has been a great help to us with your excellent production skills. 😢
Thank you so much
My Power Level jacks also level side to side. You just need to calibrate the system so it knows what side to side level is. When I picked up my coach, it was not properly calibrated and was always 4-6 degrees left. So I calibrated the system and now it levels almost perfectly every time.
Thnaks, Martin--you provide some of the most helpful and practical instructions on RV living. Really appreciated.-- Dave

Thank you for this video. I just took a tour of a RV company in IN, they said they level the RVs side by side not front to back because of twisting.
Thank you for keeping us Martinized. I hope you are doing well. ❤
I am hanging in there. Thank you for checking in with me
Ok this is the first levelling vid that FINALLY included the reasons to level, and you've convinced me that all things considered, it's worth taking a few minutes to get it right. Overall, considering your points of the risks of doing it wrong, it sounds to me like it would be way better to not do levelling at all, than to do it the way most people do.
And I still don't see a real good reason to bother. Just get rid of the stupid fridge that's causing all the trouble. The rest of the advantages of being level aren't things that I'd ever notice. Water pooling in the bath or in the sink? A door that opens? I mean those just show what a perfectionist you are. I admire your attention to detail, defront, and desides.
100% agreement on getting rid of the finicky and dangerous absorption fridge. I remember early on in our RV research phase, seeing a video where someone explored an RV junkyard. There were two reasons RV's were in there: an accident or the fridge caught fire. I replaced our absorption fridge with a 12VDC fridge before we took even one trip.
Thank you Joanie, ❤ you.
Thank you Joanie, always good to see Martin again, and get refreshers from his and your experience. Thank you
Glad you enjoyed it
Interesting that some Rigs systems can be so different. I find that it is best, in my 36' 35mq Challenger, most of the time, that I level front to back first, then side to side. When I do side to side first, a single jack will be off the ground and the Rig will jerk as the one jack with the most pressure releases to equal the pressure of its pair.
The more out of level I am, the more often a single jack will come loose no matter which way I do it. So, my takeaway from your video is that, when I am way out of level, I will use the tire ramping first, then block and use the jacks to finish the job.
Thanks Martin. Love the video. Been following these tips for years. I have the same wood blocks along with thinner ones also. Glad to see you are doing well.
I'm sad to say that Martin has passed away
Joni, We are so sorry for your loss. I have been watching you guys for a long time and found your videos very interesting and informative. Strait to the point. On our crane we make or own pads and you need to make grain of the would don’t line up the grain has to be diffrent on every one and we round the corners so the corner stick out have tendency to curl up but if you round the corners off they will last a super long time and your right we are 4-5 times heavier the your rig and we glue and screw like you do the big thing if your using more than one piece of wood just make sure the grain is not lined up and they won’t crack .
Oh man,❤ I've watched u guys for years 😢 seeing this brings tears and joy. I wish you the best for the future... I just have no words.......
