love the tip for the HDMI adapter. I was aware of the recorder options. It can depend on what recorder how easy that is and how well it works. Trying to record a headphone output into a camera (or in general) can be an issue for a couple of reasons. 1. Sometimes aspects of the headphone signal are not quite as good as the actual signal before it went through that headphone output. 2. Sometimes it can be difficult to deal with the massively different levels that are represented by a headphone output and a mic input. You generally have to set the headphone output very low. Overall this issue unfortunately is just too complicated to make any clear generalizations, it's like you'd have to do extensive testing on each device to really know how it compares. Always remember to set camera audio input to manual because auto will not only increase noise but actually create compression artifacts that you don't want. Not even most audio recorders have adjustable compressors (though some have different presets and tell you the settings for them in the manual) and it's difficult to have a clue what sort of compression/limiting is being done by the 'auto' setting in camera. Compression is really best done in post because you really never want to use more than you need. The main advantage to using auto is it should keep there from being clipping but that should not be an issue if your level is set well. Set your level to err on the side of a bit low, never push it. You can't fix clipping in post.

If you can't get audio from the HDMI to VGA adapter trick:
Some VGA adapters will only pipe audio through the 3.5mm port if the VGA adapter is connected to something. For us it was as simple as grabbing another little brick adapter, VGA to DVI out of a bin of old parts. Also, check if your adapter needs power (usually micro USB). I think it's only needed for analog to digital, not this way, but it's worth checking.

I had an issue using the HDMI to VGA adaptor with my Panasonic G80. I didn't recognise that anything was plugged in unless I actually connected a screen to the VGA part of the adaptor as well. My solution to this was to put three small 100ohm resistors between the R, G and B pins and their corresponding ground pins on the adaptor. This created a load in the circuit and the camera then believed something was plugged in. After that everything worked fine. I hope this helps anyone with the same problem.

I have an additional suggestion that blends the 4th setup and the 5th one.
I just make sure that the output monitor level and the input level on my camera match up. I simply use the recorder for monitoring and boosting my sound so that I can turn down the camera's input. It's hassle-free, clean and you don't really need to use the recorder's sound unless you're recording more than two tracks in.
It's simply a technique I lifted out of sound-engineering class.
My Camera is a Canon eos Rebel T6i/750D and my recorder is a Zoom H6 with the XY mics and a Rode VideoMicro attached. I use Zoom's plugin in my DAW to blend the three inputs into two. We call this Mid-Side recording.

You do not appear to respond to comments, but you should really update this video. Many folks report the HDMI to VGA-audio does not work for many cameras....when recording video while exporting to HDMI the camera LCD goes black. Also, how can adjust or even seen headphone levels if you are using the HDMI dongle? Best solution, invest in a camera that has microphone and headphone jacks, maybe just get a real video camera. Too many of these expensive mirrorless camera companies (Oly EM5-MkIII) are just being ultra cheap by not including the headphone circuitry and jack. It ain't perfect, but the Panasonic G95 or G9 is a good balance between still and video camera and does not leave off ports you need. Just saying.

Aydan Metsch my understanding is that it will not work. I recently ordered a rode after I was told it was compatible with my a6000, which it is not as there is no 3.5 mm port. Anyway, if you go on RUclips and type in Sony a6000 rode mic fix, you can find tutorials of what people do to bypass this issue. This is what a lot of people do, they buy this phone adapter which I will like below, and record the sound separately on there phone. If u buy a rigcage u can mount the phone and the mic up top. I ended up returning my rode and going with the at2035, the entire reason why I wanted a shotgun mic was to avoid editing audio in post, but if I’d have to do that anyway, I might as well buy an xlr condenser mic and get better quality through phantom power. (Most interfaces for xlr mics have a port so u can hear yourself while recording as well, so it seemed kinda like a waste to have the rode go through the camera, and not only would audio have to be recorded on my phone, but I’d have no way to hear myself.) I hope this explains things a bit, I’m getting my equipment to start a channel so I’ve been doing quite a bit of research. I know you asked this a while ago, but I saw other people were still seeking answers so I figured I’d let u all know what I’ve found out so far when reading into mics and other tech for cameras with no 3.5mm port. If you have any questions feel free to ask, if I know the answer I’d be happy to respond 😊
Edit: also; thatonecameraguy is a youtuber that has answered many of my questions about video production, photos, and cameras in general; I highly recommend his channel to anyone interested in this kind of stuff.

The last Option while convenient.. is in fact quite risky. If the zoom runs out of battery or has an error you will loose all your audio. If your recording.. and you have only one shot.. then better eyeball the audio on the camera with the audio levels (use a videomic pro for example) and record the audio seperatly with the zoom and the headphones. This way you always have 2 recordings. I write this because ive been in the situation where my zoom H4 decided to bug out mid recording, this can happen with every software recorder.

Thanks. Informative. Why a modern 4K bridge camera that costs $550-$1000 has a mic jack but no headphone jack makes me wonder if the camera companies have a clue as to how these cameras are being used. They could include a headphone jack for about $1 in parts and circuitry. I like the Beachtek solution because it gives you the option to use two microphones and the vol knobs make it easier to control levels than trying to use the camera menu or buttons.

Cage, monitor, pre-amp, light, mic, top and side handle, audio recorder, battery pack, rails, blackbox, ect... OR try to keep it as light as possible? One reason to get like a a6300 is the light weight and size. It seems like a lot of people like to build big rigs just to get a big rig... ? What do you guys think?

Can confirm the Monitor option does not work on my Olympus em5ii, but works superbly on my Sony a7c (which already has a headphone jack and hence is redundant)!
So for audio monitoring, Olympus users need one of the bigger models with the built in headphone jack. Unless an EM5III or new OM5 user can correct me?

A few times you said something like "just plug it in..." without giving any clue what kind of plug we're using, or what kind of input it's going to. You're not the only one making videos guilty of vagueness. Otherwise, great info... after we figure out what you meant.

Yep! Works well with a monitor, that has a headphone jack. A little lag, but livable. Using with a Nikon D5200..

hi! Thanks fort your great solution. I bought a vga hdmi adapter with audio for my zv1 sony. It works great. Only con is that playing back does not work, i.e. the screen on the camera remains black (it waits for the external vga signal) so I only listen to audio. What do you think?
    Thanks

  • @analilia0656
    @analilia0656 7 лет назад

The issue with the last solution is that the phones output is too hot for the camera to handle. Even if the recorder isn't sending audio (in idle mode) the camera will be peaking with just noise. I don't know about the H1, but the H4n and some Tascams I've worked with have that issue.

Will the dongle work with a mic? And will the beacktek connect if the camera doesn’t have a 3.5?

Excellent video and exactly what I was looking for with my A6500. I'm very new to video/audio, but is an external mic required in the options using the H1? Can't you just use the mic on the H1 and only connect the 3.5mm splitter to headphones and camera? Or is it a quality issue? Another question...is there a specific type of splitter you need? I see TRS...TRRS, etc. Thanks. Subscribed.

I went with your previous suggestion, and I'm using the Saramonic SmartRig+. I've had a Zoom H1 for years, but never would have thought of using it as a headphone monitor this way. I love the SmartRig+. I like being able to use XLR. I can use it with my Pana G7 or my iPhone. Provides 48v phantom power when I need it. Just doesn't record. I'm guessing that the pre-amps might be better than the H1? Would you now recommend using the H1 vs. the Saramonic (I do like the idea of having a backup track)?

How to HEAR the sound from the MIC WHILE RECORDING. I have boya shotgun mic plug in a Canon SL2 camera and my headphones plug in my Feelworld MA6f field monitor. I can hear the sound when I play the video of the recording, but not while it is recording. Anything I can do?

Would love to hear if you figured this one out. Ive got a SL2 and I would like to try this out but it seems like the SL2 does not send out the audio signal via HDMI while shooting. Did you manage to get it to work?

Leonard Woody no unfortunately, you cannot monitor audio while recording.

Tip: I can't clearly see your right eye in the shadow and that is annoying. Simply add a reflector to you main light source and fill in the right side. Good info, BTW.
