The 2023 edition of Devolver’s marquee marketing event contains new game announcements, playable demos and a host of other surprises including the long-awaited return, reboot and rebirth of the world’s favourite video game mascot… Volvy!
Introduced to the world more than 30 years ago in his first solo game Field Run, Volvy went on to star in a string of hit Devolver games… Hotline Miami, Enter the Gungeon, Gris, My Friend Pedro, Ape Out, Pikuniku, Cult of the Lamb...the list goes on and on. For generations of gamers, this is where it all began. The cultural icon of the gaming industry, more influential than any pop-star or politician.

Not only is this a great direct, it’s a really great parody of the game industry and, honestly, publicly facing entertainment industries as a whole
It's a masterfully executed piece of satire. I had no idea what devolver was. Still didn't at the end. But I was captivated and looked into it.
Everything about this video is honestly genius.
I feel like 90% of the people who watch this are gonna miss the point. This is such a deep and true story about the entire market and it makes you think a lot... It got me thinking about the present and the future of videogaming industry, i actually got emotional. It made me think about the era when people made videogames because they loved making videogames, filled with soul, now getting their ideas and their fanbase milked dry until nothing but scum and greed remains. Bungie. Blizzard. Battlefield. Dead space. Many more. I literally cried. I hope all develpers and higher ups see this. This won my (non existant) "E3"

You think attari crashed the videogame market in the us because they loved games too much? That Nintendo released the nes because they loved games so much and not because they were trying to be the first to revive the us market and thus make gangbusters? Like this video itself mocks EVERY ERA. It wasn't less milking and trend chasing when everyone was making their own mascot platformer. Gex the gecko is the same thing as another battle royal, they were trying to be the next sonic and now they are trying to be the next pubg. Nor was the edgy 2000s stupidity any different

I said that it reminds me when the best games, even the biggest studios, made game with love and passion, which is much more rare now. I'm not talking about money, but about the fact that money did not kill creativity as much back in the day. I even made some factual examples. I shouldn't have to explain context to you.

-full custom game animations and Easter eggs
All of that is completely unnecessary and yet they go the extra mile to make it entertaining

What Mascot Platformer trend? The one that died years ago? The one that Hat In Time helped to kill off for good? The one that's struggling to come back? Because it's not really a trend. Also, the ending was you typical "Lul! Make cute mascot evil and murderous" type cliche, which actually HAS been a common cliche with things like Willy's Wonderland, The Banana Splits movie, Winnie The Pooh: Blood and Honey, etc.

At the beginning Ronathon Trodfield being brought on stage reminded me of when Geogg Keighly brought on Ken and Roberta Williams on stage to mention, but certainly not show, their new game Colossal Cave. And the ending bit showing a parody of King's Quest certainly cemented that maybe Devolver was thinking about that too. RIP Volvy, but at least you were given the dignity of a death. Other video game mascot characters would be jealous

Watching this conference, I thought the atmosphere was similar to the Don't Hug Me I'm Scared series. And I found the name "Joe Pelling" in the credits as Director & Writer. I knew it!😂

I knew it would be hard to top the incredible 2021 Presentation, but this one is still really cool.
IMO, this is the best one they did so far and I loved the previous presentations. There was just more direction, world building and emotion to this one.
The first one will always stay the best, but this one is also very nicely put together. Game companies often take themselves too seriously.

I chuckled about impending Devolver shenanigans,
got invested and fell in love with Volvy,
laughed and coughed at the nostalgic supercut,
wondered about the state of the world and the industry,
got excited for chaos unfolding,
then a little concerned and actually legitimately cried some bitter tears at (almost!) the end!
Before being struck down emotionally (like with a rock) being left empty inside and baffled, this turning into awe at the sheer cinema.
Honestly bravo to everyone, your presentations are equally crazy and masterful satire, as well as artistically above everyone else on the metaphorical SGF show floor.
Ever since Enter the Gungeon I have explored everything DevolverDigital has put out. Love this studio. I actually ended up digging through my childhood toys & pulled out all my old Volvy merch. Good times.

I was watching for the Volvy short and didn’t expect to see Talos Principle II. Talos Principle is one of my favorite games of all time and I had no idea a sequel was even being talked about. Can’t wait!

A little detail i enjoy is that Volvy isnt made into the protagonist into every game, but rather varies depending on the scenario of the games.

We've waited for so long and finally, Volvy is back!! oh man, I still remember his famous line 'It's Volvyn' time!' right before he enters rampage mode, even though I can't recall anything else. My parents said that I'm crazy, but I didn't care. That game literally saved my life. Hope to see Volvy goofing around once again!🐭

"Chris Jake, Loud Person" was a stroke of genius. Just absolutely nailed the type.
the inspiration for Volvy came when the artist saw a rat got run over by Volvo truck. the unique figure of Volvy is a direct imitation of the disfigured rat carcass. the name came from the truck.

My god, this leaves me speechless. This is my first revolver direct. I have no clue how they can improve on a masterpiece of storytelling like this. I might have to try one or two of these games. This video was fantastic.

This is a masterpiece. Deserves an award. Seriously. It's funny, intelligent, deep, irreverent, wild, and yet insanely accurate. All of that was so good. It's packed full of great acting, editing, and imagination. Whoever worked on all of these fictional titles for the sake of this short film, bravo you know your stuff.

I don't think I watched last years so I was kinda surprised to not see mahria reprising her role. Is that something explained in the "lore" or did they announce somewhere they would go a different direction?
@@KatesDirtySister I don't know if they annonce it that they would be going in a new direction. Won't spoil the 2021 one if you wanna watch it (It's really good) but it's fitting that none of the characters of the past showcases came back.
That was so creative, funny and well produced! It must have been a lot of work and planning and it shows! It was great! I wish more people and media talked about this Direct, completely out of the box. Congratulations.
This totally embodies the entire reason why grew to love Devolver and even from the very beginning noticed what they were going for! They aren't afraid to get in the nitty gritty, dark humored side of video games/entertainment we all loved as kids growing up which seems like the mainstream is trying so hard to push away. THIS IS TRUE PASSION and they really know how to collaborate with artists from all walks of life if they notice they have that gift that not all developers have. They just get it! Love this company!
