I think it might transfer engine breaking torque if the gear lube is good enough in the worm gear. My favorite is to add a bit of graphite powder to a quality gear lube. Just because the worm gear won't send torque backwards with diesel fuel for lube, doesn't mean it won't with the best possible lube.
HD golf carts are built different. That’s what’s called a “multi-start worm” and it CAN be back-driven with enough force (like the weight of the cart and occupants coasting downhill). The tires will usually slip before the cart can be pushed from a stop, so there’s a big nut on the end of one of the drive shafts that can be loosened to allow one axle to disengage from the differential for towing. The planetary setup under the worm wheel is the differential. Something about the aluminum that HD used makes it especially brittle and vulnerable to corrosion.
Yes, interesting. When I think about our golf cart operates it makes sense. When you take your foot off the Excelerator, the cart comes to a pretty quick stop and stays where you put it. There is hardly ever a need for brakes on a golf cart. The golfer steps off the cart ,finds his ball ,takes a swing ,curses a bit and gets back into the cart and gives it the BEANS… multi-start worm is sound engineering in this case.
Who would like to see mustie do a 1956 cushman truckster revivel? If so give this a thumbs up . The cushman truckster has a car like rear axil and a three speed transmission. That might fit your needs better for your build. Theirs lots of them out there . I have two of them . One is a 1956 it's comple. I bought it 9 year ago in Albany NY . It originally came the airforce base and haven't gotten around to it . the other it a 1973 it's missing the cab but otherwise comple . Do a revival on the 56 and I'll donate the 73 .
Definitely needs 80W/90 gear oil at minimum in that worm gear drive Just needs some cleaning and TLC...I bet you could still source bearings and seals if you look hard enough Good stuff...Keep em coming!!!!

You getting your air hammer stuck is why i now have 2 air hammers. Never seems to fail i get one stuck and then i bust out the second one to free it up.

So I restored an old AMF-Harley golf Cart a few years ago that was an older style than what your rear end came from, Mine was a Three wheel type, that one you have there was from a later four wheel cart- MY cart that had a three wheel setup, had a 200cc Two stroke engine with a CVT belt setup from the crank right to the pinion gear on the Pumpkin - it had a NORMAL ring & pinion rear end, and the Two-stroke engine had the points timing set to ZERO degrees- when you wanted forward the engine ran forward, when you wanted reverse, you killed the motor, flipped a big lever and it would start the engine in reverse and run backwards- Being a two stroke with ignition set to zero it didnt matter- the Golf Cart would run 35/40mph in forwards OR reverse, which was sketchy AF You need a rear end out of a golf cart or SXS that has a regular ring & Pinion for sure for your project
That’s a planetary gear setup that allows the axels to coast when not engaged by the worm gear. Pull everything out and clean it up and replace the bearings. Don’t give up yet.
I have a similar puller (Posi-Lok). Used it in HVAC work. It came with collars you can lock onto fan hubs. The collars have a groove the puller hooks on. Best puller I ever owned.

This was cool and probably one of the best explanations of forward and reverse that I've seen. I think it's because this thing was so simple without a lot of forward gears. I do like the nature scenes at the ends of your videos just so you know.
If nothing else is gained from this, you have the makings of a good winch. Use one axle to drive the winch drum and lock the other axle. When you want to freewheel the winch drum, unlock the other axle and the drum freewheels. Use an engine to power the input shaft on the fwd/rev box with a centrifugal clutch, so you would have power in or power out.
That must have been the golf cart from the movie "Falling Down" that Michael Douglas blasts and it rolls into the lake with old guy's heart medicine. If you had jammed one axle and spun it with your drill it would have freed up those planetary gears.
I would say take it all apart clean everything, inspect the gears if they are not worn out or broken, replace the bearings and then make the decision, Then you would know for certain if it is junk or good for a project, you would just have more time invested in the rear-end and a few bucks on bearings.. Plus it would make for a great video, My opinion only Thanks for Sharing
oh, i love these style diffs, so much better than the now almost universal bevel gear. dont know why they arent used more... easier to make than a bevel... they tend to act a bit like an LSD, as the torque feeding the drive pinions has a step down to the fixed wheel, step up to the loose wheel, yet the torque to spin the loose wheel is being taken from the fixed wheel... the worm gear will be reversible. worm gears are just helical gears pushed to an extreme. some reverse, as long as the helix angle isnt too steep. this is relatively steep, so it tends to not backdrive, but it will. worm drive diffs were popular once, too. but the hypoid crown wheel took over as it gave a bit more ground clearance, yet let engines, boxes, and shafts sit lower down...
I modified a trick I learned from Taryl Fixes all where he used air chisel on the end of a shaft to loosen/remove stuck pulleys from shafts. In your case, I'd soak the brake side with penetrating oil, put a long bolt in the threaded hole with an impact socket over the hex of the bolt, then stick a pointed air chisel in the drive hole of the socket and give her hell. Should vibrate right off.
Almost looks like you have a planetary gear set going on there. The offset in the shaft leads me to believe that you are correct, that you have a worm drive, But that there is also a planetary set between the worm and the wheels.
I had a 1956 truck that had a worm drive to the diff. the ratio was such that it had overrun just like any other diff with hypoid gears, the worm and gear were made of solid bronze and at one time scrappers were buying such trucks (mostly Fodens) just to get the bronze out of the diff.

You could make a nice little electric buggy using that transaxle with the big motor and curtis controller from that hoist you got the other day.

To get the clutch off you will need a clutch remover- check at buggies warehouse golf carts.
