Haha! These are funny. My favourite 1 star review is the one that's often on social media of Pride and Prejudice - "Just a bunch of people going to each others houses". That always makes me laugh.
I don't get 1 star reviews generally though, as I feel like if you're not enjoying the book just don't continue reading!

I loved this!! Now read reviews of some of your favorite books that are NOT so boring! I can’t add any of these to my reading list because I could agree that they’re boring. (Except Donna Tart’s book. I’m reading now and am enjoying it. But they are pretentious 🤣🤣

Yes, fun video! I do read 1 star reviews for the hilarity, but also for clues about the book. They will often tell me things about the book I wouldn't necessarily think of. If the biggest complaint is that there's too much swearing, I know it's the book for me! Sometimes, the complaints are something I really don't want to deal with, like plot holes. Also, if the complaints are something like the character commits adultry, I want to read that -- not because I like adultry (lol), but because I'm interested in seeing how characters cope with it.

I really love Sweet Bean Paste and think it's such a lovely story of friendship. Strange Weather in Tokyo, I can understand why people might not like it. It's very much a statement about the old way of life vs the new way of life in Japan. The scene in the mountains cracks me up because it just doesn't turn out the way it's supposed to, plus the writing in that scene made me feel like I was there with them. I thought about it a lot when I went to Japan in October to visit a friend who lives in the mountains. The Japanese are so good at slice of life, character driven books. I can understand that not everyone enjoys that.

I could spend my whole day watching you read 1 star reviews, these were so funny. We do share some favorite books (the ones we don't share from this list are because I haven't read them yet). I think that in order to enjoy "boring" books you have to be in that mood. One of the things I loved the most while reading The Secret History is that I took my time with it, anticipated the winding down from the day so once I had nothing pending I could just enjoy laying on the couch with the sunset rays of sun hitting though the window while I read it.
I think now I'll go look for 1 star reviews for more of my faves 😂

talking about 1984 - read Wifedom Mrs Orwell's invisible life and have you ever read 1Q84 It is long and people would say cut it down /edit it to make it shorter but I would argue the beauty is in the length of the story/process

I don't mind reading reviews of books I like as long as they are not nasty or in anyway non constructive. There are many ways to write a review for a book but there are some seriously horrid reviewers who write horrible things. I know that not everyone will like the same things that is just life but there is a nice way to go about it 😊

I just watched this video today and I have to contribute to the 1 star The Secret History train. Yes I agree with all of the drawbacks of the book that Alice and the other people mentioned - the book gave me serious Catcher in the Rye vibes and I always thought that Holden was a pretentious, privileged kid who needed some therapy. So I had the same opinion about the cast of The Secret History. However, I would add that the majority of the characters are just bland or not developed enough. The main character (I don't even remember all of their names and I read the book recently) is a typical nondescript type, the girl is just a troubled girl and Francis (?) is just gay for the purpose of being gay I feel. Interestingly, the most complex character is Bunny, but he's killed off rather early, but Ms Tart did give him quite the character arch, what cannot be said about the rest of the cast, with the notable exception of Henry.

Just so the comment above wouldn't end on a sombre note - great video Alice, keep them coming! I found many other favorite reads through you, I guess this was just culturally (I'm from South East Europe) and age-wise not my cup of tea!

About The Secret History, I was quite disappointed as well
For me the worst of it was that It makes more sense that they want to kill Bunny that they was friends with this homophobic piece of shit to begin with.
And I was sooo disappointed that we never really know what happened, how they felt during their delirium

I loved the first Half of the Secret History but all I remember from the second half is pages and pages of them being at some big house for a funeral and moaning about their bedroom, moaning about little kids running around, describing the decor and sneakily smoking weed away from the parents as if they were teenagers. It did drag.
