- This performance was recorded in 2011 at the 21st Divas Simply Singing Benefit Concert held by Sheryl Lee Ralph. The original Dreamgirls cast (including Loretta Devine) joined to sing a very touching rendition of "We Are A Family" in the beginning. The performance was re-streamed today 2021, as part of the 30th Divas Simply Singing.

So, I'm not sure why people are surprised by people looking nice still as they get older. In fact quite a few people look even more attractive. Especially most men as they get older and mature. The early 1900s? You mean the 1980's. They wouldn't be here if it was the 1900's. Jennifer Holliday did the role of Effie before Jennifer Hudson was born. Both singers are powerhouse singers, just different vocal ranges. Give credit when credit is due. Discrediting a person's talent or anything else because of their age is unrealistic. Everybody is going to age and get older. Just keep living.

My mother went to see the original play and cast on Broadway (in 1982) and told me how amazing it was. She bought the album, and while we listened to the songs, she told me what was happening in the scenes. I felt like I was there!
It would be nice to see the original on DVD. I just wonder if the actual play, not just the music, was ever fully recorded (like a movie reel). You can, however, find snippets of the stage play on RUclips if you search for specific parts. I've seen Jennifer Holliday's performance of "And I Am Telling You I'm Not Going". Amazing and heartfelt! The scenes that are available are not very clear because of how they were recorded. 😉

I liked this version better then her Broadway performance. Both of the women can sing. We can give credit where credit is due, and not take anything away from anybody else. They are both blessed with a Good given gift, that only HE can give.
Hudsons voice is stronger than its ever been in her 40s so it can very well stay that strong until her 60!

On the Sinbad tv talk late night in Los Angeles years and years before two original dg's were guests and he brought out Ms Loretta Devine surprised us all audience and them. Glad to see they finally pulled it off... I've seen Ms.Holiday since 1984 from Houston to long beach CA a Ella Fitzgerald fundraising event I worked she's forever very pleasant. Proud of all Three...

I had a development deal with a producer..was about 17 and got to work with Jennifer on a song called hard time for lovers..I was always a little timid in the studio..but she shut shit down LOL I was almost afraid to do my little background part..she was like don't be shy baby..we don't got time for that... I was so embarrassed that it made me snap out of it lmao
I remember "Hard Time for Lovers". OMG, I used to love this song! I sang along every single time I played it or heard it in the radio. I just played (and added) it to my Spotify playlist. Working with her on this song must have been really cool. What a great memory to have!

@@heroxzq1263 she was very sweet but direct.. I have worked with alot of women and men and when it's a guy doing it he's a boss..a female is a bitch...and she wasn't at all.
Me9 she got that from Dionne Warwick. She told a story about the Back on the Block recording session and how someone hit the wrong note in the background vocals and Dionne made them do it again the right way. Guess that comes from actually studying her music and truly earning her Master's in music.
