    Hi Phil 👋 this is my absolute favourite station for trainspotting and has been for many years. There was no actual crossing with bells and gates and there was a flag to signal the driver to stop as it wasn't a timetabled stop. Wondabyne was for the use of the residents on the nearby islands of which my aunty was, although she was on Dangar Island which was actually closer to Hawkesbury River. If you are quiet enough you can hear the fish jumping out of the water. Beware of snakes during the warmer months and spiders under the seats at all times. My earliest memory of this location is from 1956. Great video Phil.

    As I'm sure you're interested to know, that bird at 19:53 is a brown thornbill. Nice footage as they are always on the move and usually hard to spot. And of course you have an Australian magpie at 21:53.

    I know its a long journey, but stations like wollarobba or wirragulla stations in the hunter line are TINY like they are 2 meters wide and the driver has to like snipe the doors to the station but its a request stop.

    Watch the video by Transport Vlog and Building Beautifully about Lysaghts. There is no road acces and so few people use it that they got asked to leave

    • @flamingfrancis
      @flamingfrancis 11 месяцев назад +1

      Do they mention that Lysaght's is a worker specific station. There are no residents to use it otherwise. The other three stations on the Port Kembla line service both community and workers. Cringila station (towards Port) has a huge pedestrian bridge that requires security access at the eastern side. And if one looks at reliable maps it is easy to find that the six lanes of Springhill Road are around 50 metres from the station's pedestrian overbridge. Security access may be required because it is in the centre of an industrial plant on private land.

  • @flamingfrancis
    @flamingfrancis 11 месяцев назад +1

    You are correct with the comparison of Wondabyne to Lysaght's. Wondabyne has access by boat only with a jetty adjacent. There are firetrails atop the ridges on both sides of Mullet Creek and a fire lookout on Mount Wondabyne. Sandstone from the quarry near the station used to be taken out by barge. Very familiar with Lysaght's having travelled by train to Cringila in my early working days in the 60's. A tunnel on the eastern side lands workers (with access) inside the steelworks for the hot strip mill and plate mill areas. A pedestrian bridge on the western side is used for Coated Products (originally Lysaght's) workers and this ultimaely leads to Springhill Road where workers could catch buses. Plant security monitors these areas.
    Lysaght's is an industrial station and the only worker specific staton on the Port Kembla line.
    Persons interested in Wondabyne should read up on the history of the northern rail before the Woy Woy tunnel and Hawkesbury River bridge were constructed. That section around Wondabyne was man made to allow trains to run round at water level...a magnificent piece of work in the day. Passengers used to alight at River Wharf (Hawkesbury) and travel by steamer boat on Broken Bay and Brisbane Water to Gosford to reconnect for train to Newcastle.

    Nice! We visited Wondabyne in January on a cloudy day due to Cyclone Ellie. At least you had some fishing friends join you, you know... escaping the hustle & bustle of city life. We're visiting Syd again end of this year for 2 weeks. Downside is the trains only run once an hour, with either a 20 min wait for the train you caught, to come back from New Castle, or 1hr 20 min wait for the following train. Only $6 on Opal to Wondabyne, and $6 back to Syd. Public transport is vastly more cheaper than NZ.

    I remember getting quite drunk with my mate from school and his cousin at Wondabyne circa 1998. There was this area just to the north of the station that was full of sculptures and weird shit that must have been the site of goth doof doofs from Gothsford up the road.

    Hi Phil, interesting train journey. I don't think I have ever stopped off at Wondabyne, though I have certainly passed it many times in trains over the years. The scenery looks quite nice there, especially with the water view. I am wondering where that train may have been heading to after you got off? I used to pass this area when heading to Gosford and Newcastle on day train trips from Sydney. The magpie at 21:44 looks like one of the magpies that visit our place here in Melbourne. Anyway, take care. Rob in Melbourne Australia.

    Questions from someone in Victoria who will never get a chance to visit this station. If trains only stop there when someone is getting off or on, do you have to let them know beforehand that you want to depart from there? Or do the trains stop whenever they see someone on the platform? And if so, how do they know if you did or didn't want to get on?
    Also is there a marker to let the driver know where to stop the front of the train so the back is at the platform?

    • @sydneytrainsvlogs
      @sydneytrainsvlogs  11 месяцев назад +2

      When a timetabled train is approaching you signal the driver by putting your hand out.
      Similar to waving down a bus.
      There is a 4 or 8 car marker (soon to be 6 and 10 too) where the driver will stop so that the rear door of the rear carriage stops completely in the platform :)

      During weekdays there is a V Set or two that is timetabled to stop at Wondabyne.
      Always check the info screens to make sure your train is timetabled to stop at Wondabyne.
      Tell the guard you want to get off at Wondabyne and get off in the back carriage at the back door.
      To get back on a train from Wondabyne signal the train driver (like you would with a bus) and if it’s timetabled to stop, i’ll stop :)
