Hi Alistair. Thank you so much for Your uploads! I'm from Melbourne and love the Sydney and intercity trains up here. I travelled to Hawkesbury River station today, and come back to watch that section specifically now. You must never get off the brakes coming down that steep hill trying to keep it on sixty!!!
It is a beautiful journey. I used to travel it often when I was a student at Newcastle University. I would head to visit family back in Sydney from time to time. I lived for a short while just above and to the side of that last tunnel 2:35:05 known as the ‘tick hole’. My dog would wander the bush around the area and always get bloody ticks, area is called ‘Garden Suburb’. I missed it when i moved closer to the uni at Waratah. Great vid, great memories.
Hi Alistair - great video buddy - enjoyed the whole trip! Great to see what was the ride all the way in to Newcastle. I was crew with LVR taking the last steam train (3237) into Newcastle Terminal before they closed the line at Hamilton. Used to go to Woy Woy as a kid on the U series trains - have always loved that line especially the 1 mile Woy Woy Tunnel and the trip from there to Hawkesbury River. Lucky nothing major to slow you up at Wondabyne. Thanks again for a great ride.

I would like to see a train get from Strathfield to Springwood in 11 minutes and than back to Epping 4 minutes later. I don't think even a greatest fighter jets could do those speeds.
I've watched the whole video second time. It would be so great if you media a night drive on that route. I've been to Newcastle 19 years ago. I have many good memories there. Greetings from Istanbul.
Good trip to Newy from Sydney my first time I've seen this video so could I suggest that you display on the screen the name of the stations you stop at so we can keep track of where the train is.Also State Rail need to get some weed killer onto those weeds just before Newcastle Station never seen them that bad .

Probably lucky to used 2% of the time, if that. It's only on request. Passengers wanting to board the train will wave at the driver, passengers wanting to alight there have to notify the guard before we get there, the guard then notifies the driver.
In general, the NSW 'double light colour light' signalling, the light at the top indicates the condition of the block you're about to enter, (occupied = red, unoccupied = green, turnout = yellow), whereas the bottom light indicates the current setting of the next signal (clear = green, caution = yellow, stop = red, etc). There are exceptions and qualifiers, of course.
Bit late but if you’re still interested, the letters above signals indicate what route is set where more than 1 is available, e.g S might be for the suburban line, or south (never consistent). The only A I can think of is leaving Turrela the A will take you via the airport line, as opposed to the E taking you to the Illawarra local at Tempe.
I took the line of lights at 45:03 to be an indicator that we would be going straight on at Berrowra, instead of taking the left turnout at 45:27 into the platform loop. Yet today, I travelled that route, and the line of lights was there, but we turned into the loop (and had slowed down to do so). It wasn't clear why, given that there was no train waiting on the main line to return to Central. So, now I'm confused - how does the driver know whether to slow down there?
Hi Sylvia, that first signal you mention is simply a repeater for the following signal. The following signal will indicate if going straight ahead or turning out into Platform 3. For northbound intercity trains, if stopping at Berowra, the vast majority of the time they will stop on Platform 3. This keeps Platform 2 free for a suburban train which is probably right behind the intercity train. The driver of the suburban train will then swap ends and prepare to head back south.
@@AlistairHarding The intercity train I was on didn't stop at Berowra. I expected it to use the platform 2 line, as did your train, so as not to need to slow down. Fortunately, if it lost time because of this, it made it up by the time we reached Hamilton, where I had a 4 minute connection with the Hunter line train.
Hey Alistair, please reissue the vid with the names of the stations so we know where we are. If you need help Ken Newell has given a great lisiting below. Great vid !! I was able to add my own music as well. I've now subscribed to your channel. Cheers !!
If I'm reading it right, then at 1:35:29 the speed limit is reduced to 90, having been 110, then at 1:35:44, further down the straight track, it's increased again to 100. That seems a bit odd.
There's no advance warning of speed changes. You just need to know where they are. This is actually quite important as we need to be doing the correct speed when we pass the sign - it's not like a car where you see the sign and start slowing down and don't reach that speed until you're past the sign.
@@AlistairHarding Yes, a remarkably crude system given what's been available in other countries for many years. The Netherlands, for example, has a trackside system that displays the speed to the driver on their speedo; it's present for all their different trains, and on all tracks. And it has one of the busiest rail systems in the world. At the very least you'd think there'd be some mobile device system available with everything contained in it and able to read the train's position, thus displaying current limit, next limit and distance to the change.
We might don't have all the fancy trains like in Europe the ICE but I love our noisy trains. They still bringing us home and a big "Thank you to the traindrivers".🇦🇺 🇩🇪

Yeah ask the guard at the say at central and again at hawksberry & get off at the rear door. And heading south ask the guard at the rear where you get on & pop your head out at Woy Woy
1:46:23 were you speeding? I thought the limit was 110 not 115. Is there any 115 section between Warnervale and Wyee (excluding the first ~300 metres from Warnervale)?
To be honest I can't remember the exact limit there - and it's been nearly 3 years since I drove that route. (I no longer drive trains). However it needs to be pointed out that the speed shown on the footage is the GPS speed from the camera, not the speed that is shown on the speedo in the cab. The speedo may have been reading below.
Not much to gain by speeding in a train, given that it's running to a timetable. Still, shame that it has to stop at Tuggerah, since that spoils one of the few places where it can go at speed.
I'm in Sydney now from Melbourne and was just thinking how much worse Melbourne is for 'tagging'. But then when it comes to a train network Melbourne has fallen miles off the speed set by NSW.
Somehow, the V-sets stay pretty tidy! Especially when presentation has the necessary solvents and time. Oscars and most of the Sydney Trains fleet get regularly tagged.
Line speed varies by type of train. For this train the fastest speed on this line is 125 IIRC. Fastest I've driven is 120. However other areas of the line for different trains are rated at 160kph, although it's rare for trains to reach that speed in any case. I'm told that when these V sets first came out they were regularly driven at around 150 but over the years they've been de-rated.
Excellent...great vision of this historic line. I had seen these sights from steam train windows since the mid 50's but not from up front. Can you imagine the governments of today doing what was done back when this track, the western line and the south coast line were built from the 1850's. I would recommend interested persons look up the rich history of the northern line and how it was not fully completed until Hawkesbury bridge was built some time after sections of line operated either side of the Hawkebury

i love this video mate! i'm a train driver from belgium , ive been applying for sydney rail for 6 years now but they don't recruit offshort yet , are you in permanent contact with your collegue in the train ? i noticed you get informed about people near the tracks trough phone , do you have any procedures you have to do trough paper or is it all phone ? like passing a red signal .
Hi Jolien,
We have an intercom between the driver and guard, so we can speak at any time.
No paperwork required for that sort of warning, just a verbal acknowledgement. All radio conversations like that are recorded.
@@AlistairHarding oh nice , well here in belgium its all on paper . everything that you dl has to be written down . every minute you are delayed has to be written down plus reason... i really hope i can move to australia
Nice film - but would have been better if at least some the station names had been posted in the video.
this isnt real time this was 10 years ago
I don't think you understand what real time means, friend.
@@AlistairHarding have you seen chef?
Hey there - the real time means that the video speed wasn't made faster or slower - it was in "real time" - but yeah I think it was about 10 years ago that they stopped the trains going all the way into Newcastle - hope that clears things up for you 😊
I love this but can you go to Newcastle interchange
Nope, don't work there anymore.
Do you miss Train driving? Would you go back to it if you could?
I take this or the BMT almost daily to the first stop :D (v-set ftw)
Nice work.
Well done !
Do you have a blue mountains line cab ride by any chance?
I do but I'm yet to edit it.
Ok thanks, I'll be sure to stick around.
It takes me 4 hours to get to new castle
as the last true transit cop , the panda , the pomster, epic, thnx
all those big power poles along the inlet...................installed by a russian chopper was awesome to see such skill
This is the train ride from Stepford Central to Savannah Terminal via Valdosta and East Chaseville.
I don't know where I will be getting off at, but the cafe and first class towel service are great!
The COVID 19 Special train consists of the following:
1 NJTransit Comet I Cabcar
1 Amtrak Amfleet Cafe
1 NJTransit Comet II Coach for First Class
2 MARC Nippon Sharyo IIB Coaches for Business Class
5 TVCTA Rail Comet VII coaches for standard coach seating.
And 1 Siemens Charger SC-44 Locomotive.
The consist numbers of the COVID 19 Special trains change daily. So keep that in mind.
Signed, Angela, Matthew, and 18 others.
oh yeah i was at the 3801 crash sight back in the day

R.I.p Hamilton to newcastle line 1887-2014
Hello newcastle interchange (2017-)
Hello newcastle light rail (2019-)
Can I use this footage in a 24/7 cab ride live stream thing?
As long as I'm credited, certainly!
long live the mighty V sets
3801 was quicker back in the steam hauled Newcastle Flyer days...
Great Video Mate!
V19 always reminds me of Steely Dan's song when I happen to get it. I hope they've fixed the overhead vent since last time. Check out the Simon and Garfunkel "Hitscene 1970" video clip for the song "Baby Driver". You will recognize the scenery!

Must get a dashcam! Double-Gosford early tomorrow.
I have been watching American ie USA train drivers driveing trains on RUclips by gosh they are a noisy bunch with their bells and horns thank the god we understand that our Aussie train drivers aren't as noisy makes for a more pleasant trip no need for aspirin and double scotch wisky
Yeah fine ... but how many "grade crossings" were there on this trip compared to the good ole US of a for a trip like this?
Obviously the have to sound the horn when there are track workers about - and they have to acknowledge by a wave of their hand.
Watch British ones. They're good as well.
How can real time be now when this is 4 years old?
Real time is different from 'live'...
👀 awesome 👀
Oh wow
Didn’t know where the hell I was most of the time-
nice
What's that constant ratchet noise? Sounds like very primitive train controls.
That is the throttle lever. It does come across in the video louder than what you'd notice if you were in the cab, as the microphone/camera is pretty close to it.
Reminds me of a " redrattler"
This is great, but some commentary would have been good. Even just station names.
why do sydney trains decelerate and accelerate so slowly?
They're so old... these ones are around 40 years old.
Strap-hanging on the Paris metro is no fun. Those drivers are heavy on the controls.
You have to be joking. Most of them are hitting the platforms at between 40 & 60!
Chopper on the V set
