The U.S. Navy has developed an anti-submarine task force comprised of destroyers of the Arleigh Burke-class on the East Coast to counter the Russian submarine threat in the Atlantic Ocean. The force will be available on short notice to perform operations in the North Atlantic Ocean. On Sept. 1, 2021, this new anti-submarine force, formally dubbed Task Group Greyhound, achieved initial operational capability.
The Task Force is named after the 2020 surface warfare film Greyhound, which is about destroyers defending North Atlantic Convoys during World War II against German U-boats.
Greyhound will be a rotating force with four Arleigh Burkes destroyers assigned to it on a 24-hour basis. These warships will be employed to counter any potential danger.
Rear Adm. Brendan McLane, commander of Naval Surface Force Atlantic, said in a Monday ceremony aboard USS Thomas Hudner (DDG-116) in Mayport, Fla., that Greyhound is "designed to provide the fleet with predictable, continuously ready, and fully certified warships."
“The ships will be ready to accomplish the full range of missions - including tracking Russian undersea activity in the Atlantic and maritime homeland defense for our nation.”
The formation of the new task force coincides with the Navy's realignment of assets and resources toward the Atlantic region in response to Russia's submarine capability. The Navy reactivated the United States 2nd Fleet, which covers the North Atlantic and East Coast, in 2018 in response to worries about Russian submarines operating in the waters.
