Immaculate performance, the additional cello adding just the right amount of extra depth in the lower registers. The opening and closing movements are perfectly realised while the second movement encourages remarkable technical virtuosity from the musicians. The Andante looks yearningly inward. Full-bodied string tone throughout....as to be expected from the Shostakovich ensemble.

I love this quintet! It's a great work! And the combination of pizzicato and arco in the scherzo (1891-92) seems to have influenced the scherzi of the quartets of Debussy (1893) and, in turn, Ravel (1903) and Villa-Lobos (n.3 "Popcorn Quartet" 1916).
Glazunov certainly knew how to write for strings.

es música desatada, con una soltura magnifica de cada instrumento y haciendo una unión perfecta de surrealismo y expresionismo.
Thank you for sharing that fabulous audio. It is a real treasure difficult to find

This is one of Glazunov's most impressive and satisfying chamber works, featuring some of his playful pizzicato passages and a plaintive meditation sandwiched between outer movements of inner persuasion, all inventively integrated.

A beautiful quartet. I prefer this to most of his symphonies. But the violin concerto is special, a real masterpiece.

I don't know why, but I have a hard time liking Glazunov. Seems insipid and uninspired to me.

Sheryl Smith, Have a listen to the Suite for String Quartet or "The Sea". They may change your mind. On the other hand, they might not.....
