This article about Michael Jordan turning 50 years old while reflecting on his own legacy has a passage in it that I was pleasantly surprised to see. As I’m reading it I realize this is why MJ made “The Last Dance”. It was his opportunity to say, “I’m not going to let the media manipulate my legacy in favor of propping up someone else” As sports fans we cannot allow the media to manipulate the history of events we witnessed with our own eyes. Social media is more powerful than ever. Propagandists in the sports media particularly working at ESPN/FS1 like Nick Wright and JJ Reddick, are shaping the perception of a previous generation's greatness. But they are iconoclasts. This is very similar to how Mao was able to rise to power in China during the Chinese Communist Revolution. Iconoclasm was one of the first weapons used to replace the government of China with the People's Republic Of China. You tear down the icons of the past to prop up the icons of the present as greater. Since this current generation of fans never witnessed the icons of the past, the media has the ability to easily manipulate their perception.
