If you're looking for the best way to start a city, you're probably looking for the actual game, not sandbox mode. The only reason I clicked on this was to see if there were any tips for improving my start and this was useless. Bad music, no explanation and only useful for creative mode, where, to be honest, it doesn't matter how you build.

first region is trader region
2nd is same too ( different trader )
3rd is max sims population
4th is wealth region
5th is futuristic region

I buried all the highways underground, to maximise space for residential development above ground. Yes I transferred millions from cities to cities as start-up capital. :D
the road is pleasing to see, but it wastes a lot of spaces. so yeah, not the best way
Now do it again with 50k starting budget and no sandbox mode.
This would be a great build if I didn't have to worry about workers and jobs and being startegic about it in any way. However it looks great

fun watch as always. Little OCD tip. If you wanna trim a few parallel roads just cross them with a dirt road to remove the part you want.
Edit: I really like your roads that and might use them in the following way:
\/ Low density
| high density
/\ low density
If this work, this should provide only stop signs. Guaranteed on exits where it connect to non streetcar avenues

Roads are a lot more then density and actually represent a lot of what we see in real life.
Lets take a few real life examples and apply it to sim city.
In a city or town you often have a street with the many commercials.
This street with commercial is a medium density street.*
When you travel on that road, there is very little stop lights as the stop signs are on the crossing road. Which are typically residential zones! Those roads are smaller and called Low Density Streets!
*The reason they usually do not use avenue is because the car cannot turn to park on the left side of the road. Avenues are usually used in higher speed pass thru and in medium density in residential area where crossover is prevented for security reasons. (Schools and sometime hospitals are constructed there as it allow better traffic control for safety and seeing as the hospital is on the corner it does not impact it's ability to turn where it want!)
Typically, the road will have a stop light only when crossing another major artery that convert into more commercial or a way thru to another side of the city. This is generally a Medium, High Density road or an Avenue!
So lets look at connections in sim city

If a) is :
Street car avenue, b) will need to be a dirt road to produce a singular stop on the b) connection
High den. avenue, medium den. avenue or High den road. medium den. road. b) will need to be a dirt or light density road to produce a singular stop on the b) connection
Hope this help! With the diagram you show, there are many places you can see similar. 2 light roads (1 lane), converge into a high or medium density road(2 lane) with stop sign. This allow merging traffic with little jam as the amount of lanes stay the same!
Roads are more then density.
Other things you might not know about road/Avenue.
If you place a few lanes of each road/avenue parallel, and you stuck a car on each by cutting the end you will see that Dirt road is the slowest speed limit and that Avenue has the highest.
Conclusion ? Dirt road and light streets are EPIC for service and light density streets are very good to cross between residential zones. You Zone the medium/high density and make a cross with light density (Stop only!)

How to make fancy road layouts and not paying attention to any other thing about this city.
With this design, it,appears you need more fire stations and hospitals than a grid like pattern

If someone support publishers that buy compagnies and then kill them because it doesn't want to support, make manuals and so forth... Those ppl are the problem. EA is a disease and is the reason this game had plenty of morons that kept bitching "bugs" over some mechanics that work just fine since simcity 1991...

Well, EA is going to kill Maxis if they keep doing this crap like Simcity 2013. They have been on market since 1989 (Simcity) And been kickassed by Cities: Skylines. EA has a lot to learn
@Lolaxo Jr Maxis was already closed by EA. Maxis team kept telling them that SimCity need to be explained and EA does not like manuals... Even SimCity 1989 had over 100 pages on the manual and everyone complained about bugs until Will Wright made videos explaining the game... This game is the same, 99% of bugs I seen ppl mentions are ones that exist only when you try to play the game in a way it was not meant to... Skyline is total garbage, people dont change job, they dont move closer to work, the taxes are irrelevant, losing to budget reasons is the equivalent of someone being mentally retarded.... Skyline is at best a traffic simulator... The skyline sims are so static that it make people think that people do not age, change jobs, get older, and so on... The easiest and most boring game.
Most people playing simcity could not even get past understanding how to use roads.. Just refer to the brief "loved" post I did and the reply I did to his question. It cover some basic road understanding 90% ppl dont even know..
