I grew up having a traditional Sunday tea of shellfish, cockles, mussels, winkles and whelks, that my dad would bring home from a small fish stall outside our local working men’s club if we had my Nan and Grandad staying. We enjoyed taking out the winkles from their shells and would be mildly told off if we broke the winkle. Interesting point is we were always taught to remove the “sandbag” from the whelk before eating it. It is then small intestine that you find if you put pressure on the whelk underneath the flap. We would just pinch the skin and squeeze so the “sandbag” would come out.

If you are in Birmingham Indoor Market and fancy some whelks ,to eat there or take away , there are two excellent seafood stalls. On the back wall , Arcadian centre side is ,George Smith Ltd (tell John or any of the others working there, . Aitch (H) sent you) .He cooks some whelks up freshly on Tues and weekend days, otherwise supplied ready - cooked to him. Pearce's Ltd is the other one ,slap- bang in the middle. Both are excellent and feature all the seafood you could need, from cockles mussels, whelks , jellied eels to crabs and lobsters, both cooked and live. Well appreciated by the nearby Chinese Quarter. I'm just a very appreciative customer, unconnected to either business.

My mother used to get these from the mussel and whelks shops in the Barras area of Glasgow in the 80's. Would usually have a bag of whelks and some pins to pick them out for the train ride home. Surprisingly tasty, shame they are hard to get nowadays.

Hi, well done for trying what are a 'challenging' seafood! They can be chewy (like squid & octopus) if not cooked precisely. The best way to avoid over-chewiness is to cook briefly or slowly for a longer period (i.e. steaming for around 10 mins). Another method is to steam them them finely slice and add to a stir-fry or similar. Let us know if you try again!

@@halfpintawhelks Whelks must be one of the tastiest of seafoods, but through loss of some chewing teeth, had to give them up. Have to make do with second best now. Dressed crab. Yummy.

I had some pickled conch or whelk many years ago, as i remember it was good, but it was very chewy. unfortunately not many folks up here in Maine eat them, i'd love to try them again.

@ShellfishGB The classic. Stir fried in black bean sauce, I think you can look it up. It has a very strong flavour (might be acquired) and a nice kick to it if chilis are added!

Who's here because of Sean Lock from 8 out of 10 Cats does Countdown? Only me then. I still wouldn't eat 30 of them for £10,000, don't even reckon I could manage one.

Used to love sitting with my gran with a load of these and an eggcup full of vinegar between us. We would eat them with a hat pin she saved solely for that purpose. Never had one again after she died
