- A common mistake that new nonprofits make is misunderstanding how to fundraise for their nonprofits during their startup years. Many founders believe that they can win substantial grants, which will cover their operating expenses. Learn how grant funding should not be the only place you look to finance your early years.
In this video, I discuss 5 sources of funding for startup nonprofits which include board giving, peer-to-peer fundraising, grants, government funding, and support from local businesses. Relationships are key to any nonprofit fundraising efforts, and it's no different when looking for startup funding for your nonprofit.

Create budget, how much do you want to raise…
1. Board- should be donating for the start up; don’t have connections established yet; monthly amount per board member $50/mo.
2. Peer-to-Peer Fundraising- example- Facebook fundraiser, other people fundraise on your behalf, reach out to circle of influence; keep a list of donors- have an ongoing conversation
3. Grants- local Walmart grants, community foundations ex. nashville- hands on Nashville, Middle Tennessee Community Foundation, local clubs, banks, neighborhood grants, local businesses- stores;
4. Public (Govt.) funding- more so contracts; ex. Veteran affairs, after school programming, community development, etc. Build relationships, attend community meetings; local politics; the government may subsidize services you provide so clients don’t have to pay;
5. Corporations- In kind donations, sponsorships for events, a mutually beneficial relationship, companies with headquarters in your city. BUILD GENUINE relationships.

First off thank you so much for all you detail videos!!! I do have a question when should I file for a 501c3?
You're very welcome! That's an individual decision, but you have the ability to file as soon as you incorporate in your state. You may want to do that quickly since the IRS is a little backed up. But if you're not going to raise more than 5K in a year you don't HAVE to apply for 501c3 status, it's up to your board. The IRS prefers that you apply for your status within 27 months of incorporating. There are so many caveats so it's hard to say :) but you have the ability after you get your certificate of incorporation.
What is the Facebook group?
Thank you for making these videos!

I have a few thousand dollars to invest in my nonprofit start up expenses; is there a way to recoup that money somehow later on when you are already getting donations?. could you give me your comments on this. Thanks
I can only give general advice. You could think about giving a loan to the organization (the board will need to vote on this independently) and writing out a promissory note so that the terms and amounts are clear with everyone.
@@BossonaBudget Thanks for your input.
I have a question that has been bugging me for some time: does anyone know what the break down is of grants vs donations for new nonprofits?
There isn’t a perfect formula but generally you want to build a strong donor base in the beginning and it takes time to start winning major grants. I teach people to focus on local community grants, individual donors and earned income strategies to start out
I understand It's unethical expect the grant writer to get paid after the grant has been granted. Okay. I can see how that's unethical, just as hiring someone to do fundraising and paying them a commission percentage based on the money they raise. Okay. Now, on my end for example. What can you recommend me to do, in order to not have to take all the risk of paying upfront for a service, without any guarantees that I will have any positive results?
The best guarantee is to write them yourself because no grant writer can promise a win, no matter how good they are. Good ones can help you pick the opportunities that you're the most likely to win. But I would get a grant writer to help you develop a sample proposal that you can use repeatedly.
How do Iget more information
Hi, what more info do you need?
Hello and good morning I hope you are well. We are new community interest company in Stockport who provide counselling/psychotherapy to people on benefits and low incomes. We are looking for funding for our first project. Do you know anyone who can help with this ? Thank you George
