- I spent a day with 2016 Olympian and 2019 National Trophy Individual (NTI) match winner Dan Lowe talking about service rifle offhand technique. This segment covers setting up and ends just as firing begins. Watch the other two segments for more.
Thank you both, very informative.
Thank you for sharing this. The car alarm made me giggle. Informative and interesting video - very helpful. Watching these get me excited about the coming season :D
I'd like to see the warmup stretches.
No you don't. We look like ducks dancing during those stretches. Definitely not sexy like the good Instagram influencer videos. Lol. But Dan will eventually visit again and I'll ask him if he feels like doing the waddle of shame for the camera.
Thanks Dan and Dennis.
Exactly what I needed to see. I have my first match Sunday. Coat and glove coming tomorrow. Will have 2 days practice
isn't that cheating
they should have every contender naked or in underwear, to keep the playing field level
I can't afford a fancy coat or fancy gloves and that's the only reason these people have an advantage on me
Excellent Dennis and thanks for this informative video. I too would be interested in the equipment you're using here such as rifle, upper, barrel, scope, scope mount, etc. I'm new at this but your video motivates me to give it a try.
super helpful- thank you
Too damn smart. Reminds me of you Dennis. Kudos
Could you put the names of the equipment you use in the description. I'm sure we can all google search for a link but it is a little difficult to hear the names because of some of the background wind noise.
I see in the article it says the ammo is loaded to mag length. I have seen some other articles where they say the ammo is loaded "long"...which i assume is longer than mag length. If this ammo is mag length...then why isnt he using the mag? just out of habit? if one is not going to use a mag, then do you need to crimp the rounds or even use a cannelure to start with? Thanks Dennis Edit: nevermind lol, I see that there are different stages, some single loaded and some rapid fire from mags
Thought you couldn't use the sling as a part of support? Per cmp
Using the sling as a height spacer is not considered support.
That rule is meant to prohibit using the sling in what’s called the “hasty sling” support method which involves wrapping your arm around it to create a triangle of support.
The “hasty sling” technique does work and a good rifleman should know how to implement it particularly for hunting use.
The only part of the stock that is in the pocket in my offhand is the sling swivel.
What club is this recorded at? Burbank? Where is that? Noise canceling mic needed
BRRC is in Castaic, California just north of Los Angeles.
a dumb question. I always hear that "ARs arent accurate" etc. Then how are CMP shooters routinely hitting x ring at 200 yrds?? Are these highly modified ARs or mostly stock? handloads or factory ammo? What MOA would someone like Dan be hitting if he took that same gun and shot off a bipod or bags??
That is a misnomer. The M-16/AR-15 system is one of the most accurate series of rifles ever invented. They are capable of shooting around 1 moa with a free floated barrel and good ammunition. Most of the accuracy problems with the gun start to the rear of the buttplate. Marksmanship matters.
@@CMPInstructor hand loaded ammo used in this vid though, correct?
@@JohnProph yes it is. Almost everyone competing in across the course matches uses handloads. Burning an average between 2,000 to 5,000 rounds per year in training and matches, its uneconomic otherwise. The economics are that you can shoot two to three rounds for every factory round. That's a lot of affordability leverage.
Given that, please also note that the load combinations that work for XTC shooting are pretty standard at this point.
@@sjb3460 natchez has some small rifle primers recently
@@sjb3460 its different for those of us who just got into the game. I dont have any "good old days" to compare to. to actually physically lay my hand on primers AT ALL is a big deal
Dennis which rail covers do you use on the gieselle hand guard? Thanks
Anything that covers the sharp rails so they don't tear your glove up works. Use either thin ones or thick ones as you prefer. They all get the job done.
@@CMPInstructor Thanks
What the barrel length of this rifle ? Is it 20 inch ?
Yes. CMP and NRA Service Rifle competition is done primarily with 20” barrels. However, the same shot technique principles apply with any other type of rifle, including the 16” variants of the AR-15, when used for this type of offhand target shooting.
What was the name of his glove and jacket?
Jacket looks like it's a Kurt Thune high power jacket: www.kurtthune.com/products/jackets?product_id=121
Glove looks like a Kurt Thune glove as well: www.kurtthune.com/products/gloves
