Many of these beautiful ladies names, were not actually their “Hollywood name”. They changed their names once in Hollywood.
Secondly, Many of these actresses, actually worked in RADIO as well, and sone made it from RADIO to the Big Screen due to their popularity on radio.
Since everyone had radios in their home, before TV, many stars were radio actors and actresses for years before seeing in films at the theater. (TV wasn’t featuring these real big stars until years later) You had to go to the theater to see them. But then, most people went to the theater at LEAST once a week in those days! But the theater was different than today. For one, it was inexpensive to go. Even when adjusted for inflation, todays outrageous prices to go see a movie, are not at all comparable to the cost in the 40’s and 50’s. So people went often. And many people went by themself. They didn’t feel like they HAD to have company with them to go see a movie. Unlike today, where very few people will go to the theater by themself.
Hollywood made these ladies stars. And put them on contract. So they could only do films with that one studio. There was great competition between studios.
Many of the famous actors in Hollywood films today, are directly related to these ladies. Although many change their name, so it’s hard to tell sometimes without digging. These are the mothers and grandmothers of many of todays stars.
I found it interesting that you mentioned Edith Head. Edith Head was a friend of the family, primarily my father. Edith dressed all these ladies and created all the latest ladies fashions. Edith was quite a woman, and back in the day, heck even as late as the 1970’s, everyone and I repeat everyone knew who Edith Head was. She designed and dressed ALL the biggest stars, and way back also. She was an icon in Hollywood, and still is if you ask any older folks.
Thanks for the video! Lots of great names and memories here. 👍👍👍
