  • The Half Fast Travelers are taking another cruise. This time in Europe. Our third stop is in Le Havre, France where we rent a car & travel to the site of the World War 2 D-Day Invasion on the beaches of Normandy. We explore the Dog and Charlie Sectors of Omaha Beach and take a walking tour of Pointe Du Hoc. We also tour the D-Day Museum at Omaha Beach seeing multiple dioramas and displays of actual equipment and uniforms from the June 6, 1944 invasion. We see the multiple memorials in the area including the Ranger Memorial at Pointe Du Hoc, the National Guard Memorial & the D-Day Memorial to the allied coalition forces. Along the way, we walk through abandoned German Bunkers and see the remnants of the epic battle including bomb craters, bullet holes, and shrapnel damage, We get a sense of the bravery & determination of the United States Ranger Battalions as we see the cliffs along Pointe Du Hoc where the US troops scaled the cliffs under heavy German fire. Experiencing this area gives us new insight and perspective on the D-Day landings, much more than watching movies like "Saving Private Ryan" or "The Longest Day." This area is a "must-see" when visiting Northern France for history buffs, or those interested in one of the most important battles of World War 2.
After we leave the beaches we also explore the city of Bayeux, France and tour the Notre Dame Cathedral. We hope this information is helpful for those planning a trip to Normandy.
