Respect to him, respect to Solfa, and I'm kind of uncomfortable that people's takeaway from this video was the heavy Southern accent, since white Western expat entitlement in Asian countries like Korea is the elephant in the room, at least for me.
Seriously, he was the only one who didn't try to deflect and play dumb about white privilege in Korea. I don't need every video to discuss the consequences of white Western imperialism in East Asia, or the fact that the US owns military bases on sovereign Korean soil, but it's very uncomfortable to see white expats in Korea complain about minor disadvantages like "Koreans are prejudiced because they don't think a white person can truly be Korean" or "Koreans shouldn't be so racist and assume white expats are all here for sex tourism" when they enjoy massive overall benefits like favorable employment, compliments about their looks, etc.
It's very very rare. I visited Korea many times and meet ESL teachers and most are white and they usually act ignorant and just party at hong dae on the weekends.
Can't tell if dude's accent is real or fake. But as a non white American, I'm really appreciative of the words the gentleman shared at the end of the video. Thanks for that.

I was honestly surprised by the fact that he was able to speak out about it. I alot of white people somehow feel threatened when people tell them of their privileges so I have a lot of respect for him to be able to not only admit to it but also to inform others of it.

As a non-American and a non-native English speaker - the bald guy is what I picture as the most American thing, heh. Not just his accent! But his sarcasm, that sarcasn right there - that's so American. And not sitcom American, but folk American. It's so awesome!
Well, he's privileged in Korea only in the sense that blacks, for example, are privileged when applying to college/university in America thanks to affirmative action (universities in America reserve so many spots for students of varying races in order to meet diversity quotas, so races with lower average GPAs have an advantage over races with higher average GPAs in the application process). Westerners are highly prized for teaching positions in Korea ("fetishized" might honestly be a better word). I have a cousin who taught English in Korea for a couple years and he told me that Korean parents seemed to sort of lord it over other parents when their children were being taught by a Westerner, in the same sort of way Westerners will lord it over each other when they drive fancier cars. My cousin is half-Chinese, half-white too, so I don't think skin color plays as much a role in job competition than does one's place of origin and education. Whether or not that's what the guy was really getting at, I'm not sure, but that's my impression of the situation in Korea these days.

It's a different kind of "white privilege". Remember that Korea is not a European/Western nation. White males are not the majority and are often seen as outsiders in an Asian country even if they have lived there their entire life. What the man was talking about is much more similar to a Korean teacher in America. If you are female and Korean, you will have a much easier path into teaching Korean in America than a white male would. If you are Chinese then you have an easier path into teaching Chinese. If you are in any way Hispanic, people will expect you to be a better Spanish teacher even if you speak Portuguese. The bias is that people of the "correct" ethnicity are also expected to be well-versed in the culture associated with that ethnicity, regardless of their actual background. There are certainly perks for being white and male, but "white privilege" isn't quite what the man at the end was talking about. In fact, he even said that being a white woman would make it even easier to land an English teaching job in Korea. This is probably due to the stereotype that women are more nurturing and thus make better teachers. The fact that any of these stereotypes exist is what the man took issue with.

I have a cousin who taught English in Korea for a couple years and he told me that Korean parents seemed to sort of lord it over other parents when their children were being taught by a Westerner, in the same sort of way Westerners will lord it over each other when they drive fancier cars. My cousin is half-Chinese, half-white too, so I don't think skin color plays as much a role in job competition than does one's place of origin and education. Whether or not that's what the guy was really getting at, I'm not sure, but that's my impression of the situation in Korea these days.

It's a different kind of "white privilege". Remember that Korea is not a European/Western nation. White males are not the majority and are often seen as outsiders in an Asian country even if they have lived there their entire life.
What the man was talking about is much more similar to a Korean teacher in America. If you are female and Korean, you will have a much easier path into teaching Korean in America than a white male would. If you are Chinese then you have an easier path into teaching Chinese. If you are in any way Hispanic, people will expect you to be a better Spanish teacher even if you speak Portuguese. The bias is that people of the "correct" ethnicity are also expected to be well-versed in the culture associated with that ethnicity, regardless of their actual background.
There are certainly perks for being white and male, but "white privilege" isn't quite what the man at the end was talking about. In fact, he even said that being a white woman would make it even easier to land an English teaching job in Korea. This is probably due to the stereotype that women are more nurturing and thus make better teachers. The fact that any of these stereotypes exist is what the man took issue with.

I think most people -- non-Southerners -- will typically say Texas, but my guess is that he's probably from somewhere within the geographic rhombus of Virginia to Kentucky to Mississippi to Georgia (and then back to VA). His accent is a rich, southern country twang. I'm a New Englander, so it's a little difficult for me to pinpoint where he may possibly be from.

I live in Chicago and its just so strange to actually hear someone with a southern accent lmao because I'm just so use to hearing the general american accent but its a cute accent. Contrary to everyone's belief, us Chicagoans don't all have have that midwestern accent. Its much more concentrated in the older generations, younger generations have the general american accent.
