I’ve been on the Cyclone twice...in a row. Those turns are really something else. It really feel as if the cars are going to come off the track when you hit some of them.
For those of you who are blowing smoke out of your butts. The Coney Island Cyclone is a historic wooden roller coaster, that opened on June 26, 1927. It was declared a New York City landmark on July 12, 1988, and was placed on the National Register of Historic Places on June 26, 1991. So for the person who thought it would be cool to turn it in to a hybrid it will never happen and I am happy about that.

@@kevinthompson6986 Yep, it’s at Luna Park in Melbourne & is called the Scenic Railway, not as violent as this ride tho. The park & the coaster opened in 1912 & another roller coaster similar to this one, called the The Big Dipper, was built at a later stage. I believe The Big Dipper was based on this design & was intended to keep with the Coney Island theme of exhilarating roller coaster rides. Unfortunately, it was dismantled during the mid to late 80s due to maintenance costs but I got to ride it during the late 70s & early 90s & it was amazing! The original Scenic Railway coaster is still operating & running today :)

Rode it in the AM, and it was surprisingly smooth. Three hours later, it was a totally different beast, nearly took my head off. Those woodies change as the day goes, the wood bends and warps.
Yes, it indeed is one of the best woodies made...ever. You think about it, this coaster is ONLY 85ft tall yet it boasts a 55 degree (some say it's 58) first drop that reaches a seamingly impossible 60mph. That's pretty fast for a small coaster.
My father made a bet with me and my brother Michael that if we go on The Cyclone more than once we can keep the 20 dollars. It was 1982 I was fifteen my brother was fourteen. We rode The Cyclone 5 times and I rode roller Coster's all kinds all my life but my favorite is The Coney Island Cyclone.
My favorite Cyclone moment was 1979/80 and seeing one of the employees testing the ride... with a German Shepherd in the car. The dog seemed used to the experience
This is rollercoaster history right here! As much as I love The Beast for being my first "big" coaster, I have to say that this beauty built 50 years prior will always be the granddad of ALL rollercoasters, wood or steel. It all starts somewhere and this is a great way to put rollercoasters on the map at the time! Still looks amazing to ride today!! Can't wait to get my chance next summer, I'm there for sure!
I lived in Coney Island as a kid in the 50's and the Cyclone was my first coaster ride. Loved it and so glad they have maintained it and it's now on the Nat'l Register of Historic Place. I was saddened when they turned Steeple Chase into a parking lot. Loved the steel horses!
I did it guys. Today, 6/12/21, i achieved my lifelong goal, my bucket list item, of finally riding the Cyclone. Let me break it down: Yes, this is an OLD ride. It's almost 100 years old. It's not a smooth RMC coaster, it's not a kid's ride. This ride is quite violent, especially because it was built at a time when amusements rides were still in their kindergarten years, and the technology just wasn't there. This ride has: a station, a chainlift, a track, and then brakes at the end. There's no brakes before each turn to slow you down enough to the point you don't get jerked in your seat. Not here; you take those near-hairpin turns at almost full speed. You WILL crash into the person riding next to you! All that said though? Waiting and hoping all this time was totally worth it. One of the happiest moments of my life and lived up to the hype!
In the Spring of 1966 or 1967 there was a 2-for-1 promotion on most of the rides in Coney Island, the Cyclone included. About a dozen of my friends and I (from Seagate, Warbasse and Luna Park) cut school (Mark Twain JHS) and spent the day on the rides. The Cyclone was 15 cents per ride. I went on 13 times in a row! It was awesome!
It opened in 1927. It's a classic in every way. While small by today's standards at only 85ft tall, it still has a pretty steep (for a woodie) 55 degree first drop and hits 60mph (that is fast for such a small drop). It packs quite a bit of ride (it goes around 3 times on itself) in an only 800 foot long space. It is also known as a 'rib tickler' for the shallow turns that throw riders to the outside of the turn (being a classic coaster the seats don't have dividers). This was my first woodie.

It's not the biggest roller coaster or even the fastest anywhere, but just the fact that it's wooden and it's freakin' old you feel like it's not maintained-You feel the creaks and wood give and you feel like it can break and fall from underneath you at anytime... it's also amazing!!!
Video doesn't do it justice, it's one of the funnest roller coaster that have ever been on... You can feel the whole structure shake, the car moves side-to-side on the track, almost feels like the wheels are coming off the tracks when it turns, looks like you're going to fly off at the turns, so much fun
They have maintained it well, so it would not unless a huge storm came in, and even that is pretty unlikely. It has survived probably several hurricanes
The Giant Dipper at Santa Cruz was built three years earlier, and it has an even more exciting first-three-hills combination--you won't be sure that you'll survive when you approach the third. The rest is kind of bla, and the Cyclone is longer. The Cyclone sustains the thrill factor for a longer time. Two classics that still hold their own.
This video is making me tear up. First roller coaster I've ever been on. My stepdad(may he rest in peace) dared me to get on when I was 14 back in the late 70's. We rode in the very last car and it effing took my life. After this no other roller coaster can scare me.
One of the greatest coasters ever! I've been on this numerous times and after riding it 10 times in a row, my head was pounding and my body hurt all over but it was so worth it.

One of the all time greats! The new steel coasters have their moments, but the design of the curves and dips on the Cyclone make for a wonderful positive to negative G coaster experience. Short sweet and still making my heart pound after 30 years.
It's great that this historic landmark still works and it's a super long coaster. I'm just wondering how bad z "shocks" r on z cars. ie, does it rattle & vibrate so rough that u feel like ur riding on a paint mixer or jack hammer leaving z coaster wif migraines & who knows what else
For example, that old wooden roller coaster at Hersheypark (I think called the wild cat) is so rough that u almost get a concussion and a broken jaw!! Is so rough and uncomfortable, is too painful to enjoy the ride! You almost need to leave in the structure because it's so rough

Me and my 9 yr old son just rode the Cyclone last week 7/22/23 and we both absolutely loved it. I grew up going on the cyclone back in the 1970’s with the P.O.P. deal. You could ride the Cyclone all day long which me and my brother did. If you enjoy rides this is like a trip to the roller coaster version of Mecca.
I remember riding this Old Beauty when I was on Holiday to New York from London many years years ago, what an Awesome Coaster. There is Nothing better in this World than a Woodie. ❤️😊
Now that's a roller coaster! I've looked at POV's for at least 100 coasters and it just dawned on me I haven't seen the one for the most famous roller coaster of them all. That looks like a long, fast and rough ride, just the way they're supposed to be. The next time we're in Jersey City in the Summer we're going to have to take a drive to Coney Island and ride this and chalk it up next to the Phoenix in Knoebel's and the Comet in Great Escape.

Years ago, my late wife knew how to tease my ego. We had just filled up at a local Italian restaurant and were driving past Coney Island in early April. We were surprised to see the cyclone was open independent of the rest of the park that was still closed. I said to my wife, if I wasn't so stuffed, I would ride it. She said, I'm sure you would. It's good to have an excuse to cover up for being chicken. I slammed on the brakes and backed up the car three blocks and pulled up next to the ride. I was stuffed and the safety bar was pressed against my belly. I enjoyed the ride. She always knew how to motivate me. Of course, she didn't ride it.
I rode this in the front seat a couple weeks ago for the first time, really didn't think it was very rough. I liked it, got some airtime toward the end. All 3 woodies at Holiday World are much, MUCH more painful to me.

Actually it is a hybrid. If you would lay steel track on the steel supports it would become a steel coaster wouldn't it?
But it’s not actually a “wooden” roller coaster. If you actually look at the framework, it’s supports are made of steel.

Rode it in the AM, and it was surprisingly smooth. Three hours later, it was a totally different beast, nearly took my head off. Those woodies change as the day goes, the wood bends and warps.

Yes, it indeed is one of the best woodies made...ever. You think about it, this coaster is ONLY 85ft tall yet it boasts a 55 degree (some say it's 58) first drop that reaches a seamingly impossible 60mph. That's pretty fast for a small coaster.

My father made a bet with me and my brother Michael that if we go on The Cyclone more than once we can keep the 20 dollars. It was 1982 I was fifteen my brother was fourteen. We rode The Cyclone 5 times and I rode roller Coster's all kinds all my life but my favorite is The Coney Island Cyclone.

Y'know, I had a strange feeling from the start
This is rollercoaster history right here! As much as I love The Beast for being my first "big" coaster, I have to say that this beauty built 50 years prior will always be the granddad of ALL rollercoasters, wood or steel. It all starts somewhere and this is a great way to put rollercoasters on the map at the time! Still looks amazing to ride today!! Can't wait to get my chance next summer, I'm there for sure!

I lived in Coney Island as a kid in the 50's and the Cyclone was my first coaster ride. Loved it and so glad they have maintained it and it's now on the Nat'l Register of Historic Place. I was saddened when they turned Steeple Chase into a parking lot. Loved the steel horses!

I did it guys. Today, 6/12/21, i achieved my lifelong goal, my bucket list item, of finally riding the Cyclone. Let me break it down:
Yes, this is an OLD ride. It's almost 100 years old. It's not a smooth RMC coaster, it's not a kid's ride. This ride is quite violent, especially because it was built at a time when amusements rides were still in their kindergarten years, and the technology just wasn't there. This ride has: a station, a chainlift, a track, and then brakes at the end. There's no brakes before each turn to slow you down enough to the point you don't get jerked in your seat. Not here; you take those near-hairpin turns at almost full speed. You WILL crash into the person riding next to you!
All that said though? Waiting and hoping all this time was totally worth it. One of the happiest moments of my life and lived up to the hype!

In the Spring of 1966 or 1967 there was a 2-for-1 promotion on most of the rides in Coney Island, the Cyclone included. About a dozen of my friends and I (from Seagate, Warbasse and Luna Park) cut school (Mark Twain JHS) and spent the day on the rides. The Cyclone was 15 cents per ride. I went on 13 times in a row! It was awesome!

The refurbished this many times this isn’t the same ride from almost a century ago
It opened in 1927. It's a classic in every way. While small by today's standards at only 85ft tall, it still has a pretty steep (for a woodie) 55 degree first drop and hits 60mph (that is fast for such a small drop). It packs quite a bit of ride (it goes around 3 times on itself) in an only 800 foot long space. It is also known as a 'rib tickler' for the shallow turns that throw riders to the outside of the turn (being a classic coaster the seats don't have dividers). This was my first woodie.
So glad I grew up in NYC and got to come here, it was a huge part of my summers as a kid

It's not the biggest roller coaster or even the fastest anywhere, but just the fact that it's wooden and it's freakin' old you feel like it's not maintained-You feel the creaks and wood give and you feel like it can break and fall from underneath you at anytime... it's also amazing!!!

The new Luna Park lacks the grandeur of the original.
Video doesn't do it justice, it's one of the funnest roller coaster that have ever been on... You can feel the whole structure shake, the car moves side-to-side on the track, almost feels like the wheels are coming off the tracks when it turns, looks like you're going to fly off at the turns, so much fun
I just went on this ride for the first time and I was scared it was going to collapse because it’s like 90 years old
They have maintained it well, so it would not unless a huge storm came in, and even that is pretty unlikely. It has survived probably several hurricanes

Went on the Cyclone for the very first time a couple weeks ago, and this coaster STILL holds up! One of the world's very best!
The Giant Dipper at Santa Cruz was built three years earlier, and it has an even more exciting first-three-hills combination--you won't be sure that you'll survive when you approach the third. The rest is kind of bla, and the Cyclone is longer. The Cyclone sustains the thrill factor for a longer time. Two classics that still hold their own.
And the Giant Dipper has that cool train whistle and the dark tunnel with that grease smell before you hit the first hill 😆
This video is making me tear up. First roller coaster I've ever been on. My stepdad(may he rest in peace) dared me to get on when I was 14 back in the late 70's. We rode in the very last car and it effing took my life. After this no other roller coaster can scare me.

Pretty admirable for a wooden coaster this size (not to mention from this era) to reach 60 mph.
It's pretty cool how it pauses just a little at the top of each crest. It adds a lot to the anticipation and elegance of the ride. It's a classic.
Rode the front and the middle and the back many times through out the years. Coolest coaster - best in the back.
The ride is so rough, When the car went down I hit my nose on the handle bar and my nose started bleeding.

One of the greatest coasters ever! I've been on this numerous times and after riding it 10 times in a row, my head was pounding and my body hurt all over but it was so worth it.

Without a doubt the all time classic roller coaster. Has been thrilling me for 40 years.
I have tried them all and this one is still the best.
I rode on the Cyclone when I was about 7, then rode it again as a teen and as an adult. I always remember how scary it was turning those corners.
We went here at night less than an hour from close down and there was no lines. Best ever!!!!!

One of the all time greats! The new steel coasters have their moments, but the design of the curves and dips on the Cyclone make for a wonderful positive to negative G coaster experience. Short sweet and still making my heart pound after 30 years.

I'm just wondering how bad z "shocks" r on z cars.
ie, does it rattle & vibrate so rough that u feel like ur riding on a paint mixer or jack hammer leaving z coaster wif migraines & who knows what else
For example, that old wooden roller coaster at Hersheypark (I think called the wild cat) is so rough that u almost get a concussion and a broken jaw!!
Is so rough and uncomfortable, is too painful to enjoy the ride! You almost need to leave in the structure because it's so rough

Me and my 9 yr old son just rode the Cyclone last week 7/22/23 and we both absolutely loved it. I grew up going on the cyclone back in the 1970’s with the P.O.P. deal. You could ride the Cyclone all day long which me and my brother did. If you enjoy rides this is like a trip to the roller coaster version of Mecca.
I remember riding this Old Beauty when I was on Holiday to New York from London many years years ago, what an Awesome Coaster.

Now that's a roller coaster! I've looked at POV's for at least 100 coasters and it just dawned on me I haven't seen the one for the most famous roller coaster of them all. That looks like a long, fast and rough ride, just the way they're supposed to be. The next time we're in Jersey City in the Summer we're going to have to take a drive to Coney Island and ride this and chalk it up next to the Phoenix in Knoebel's and the Comet in Great Escape.

Years ago, my late wife knew how to tease my ego. We had just filled up at a local Italian restaurant and were driving past Coney Island in early April. We were surprised to see the cyclone was open independent of the rest of the park that was still closed. I said to my wife, if I wasn't so stuffed, I would ride it. She said, I'm sure you would. It's good to have an excuse to cover up for being chicken. I slammed on the brakes and backed up the car three blocks and pulled up next to the ride. I was stuffed and the safety bar was pressed against my belly. I enjoyed the ride. She always knew how to motivate me. Of course, she didn't ride it.
I rode it once, in 1968 as an 18 year old.
The first drop feels like it's straight down, as it lifts you out of the seat. Truly scary.
What a great time to be an 18 year old, I couldn't even imagine. When I was 18 it was 2012.
And I just went to Cedar Point (first time being a REAL coaster, not six flags wooden stuff) last year!

I rode this in the front seat a couple weeks ago for the first time, really didn't think it was very rough. I liked it, got some airtime toward the end. All 3 woodies at Holiday World are much, MUCH more painful to me.
Got on this gem last night, I was scared at first but was laughing at the end. It was so much fun. I have to go back!
