  • To pass your road test, passenger vehicles must maintain a following distance of 2 seconds. Watch the video! SUBSCRIBE TODAY! ► / smartdrivetest
    Passenger vehicles must maintain a following distance of 2-3 seconds in good conditions.
    Large vehicles (trucks & trailers, buses, lorries, vehicles towing trailers) must maintain a greater following distance of 5 seconds.
    Following distance is measure in time, because it is relative to speed. In other words, the faster the vehicle travels the greater the following distance.
    For example, at 60kph (40mph) your following distance is approximately 34m (111'ft) when following at 2 seconds. When the road speed increases to 100kph (62mph) your following distance increases to 54m (177'ft) when following at 2 seconds.
    When travelling along a roadway, find a fixed object in the distance. When the vehicle in front of you passes that fixed object your start counting.
    "one purple tequila, two purple tequila..."
    When you pass the same fixed object, stop counting. The number you reached is your following distance. Under ideal driving conditions in a passenger vehicle it should be 2 seconds minimum.
    As road conditions deteriorate, your following distance should increase.
    Good defensive posturing dictates a safe following distance. And for the buffer of space around your vehicle, you can always control the space in front of your vehicle - always.
    A proper following distance will also reduce stress, fatigue, and improve fuel economy. As well, good speed management in combination with space management will allow you to use cruise control and brake less. Both of these will improve the overall life of your vehicle, thus costing you less money because you won't have as many repair bills.
    Good luck on your road test!

    To pass a road test you must maintain proper following distance, which is 2 seconds in a passenger vehicle and 5 seconds in a commercial or recreational vehicle. This is the space management component of the road test.

    In rainy or snow/icy conditions, how would you be able to know if you're tailgating if in those conditions that more following distance is required in ideal conditions where you would have to see the car's wheels to know that you aren't tailgating?

    I soved the roblems pussled me for years!! I have always been taught to count. I really didn't know how ans what for. in fact, counting is for the right distance. I needn't to count! I only need to know the distance by putting the span in my eye to the road!!! So that I have time to do something to slow down or speed up my car!!!!

    • @smartdrivetest
      @smartdrivetest  6 лет назад

      I still don't think you've got it. I might suggest that you find someone who can demonstrate the technique and go out with them and have them show it to you. All the best, Cheers Rick

    Thank you so much for your reply.
    I am still confused. I tried hundreds of counting, but I still don't know how far I am from the front car. So, I have got a conclusion, I doun't think I the only thing I need to do is to count the crocodiles. I think whehn start counting, I should also remember where the count start, i.e. what is at the roadside to mark the start, after I stgart counting, I should immediatel keep the mark in my sight, and count the crocodles while my car moving forward. acctualy, my eyes should keep two things in, the roadside mark (a tree, stone, etc), and the crocodiles running into my eyes (keep counting). am I right?

    and, I can have both of them, the crocodiles and the roadsidemark in my eyes synchronously while I am far enogh, but as I am closer and closer, I have no such wide sight to keep them both in, what shall I do? Can I do this, while watching the road ahead, and give a quick glance at the side to make sure where my car is so that I can make stop counting exactly when reach the mark? Is the glance allowed?
    If is, how long should it be? one second? half second?
    Thank you !!!!!
    And I am still worried. Is that true while you are driving a car, you still have the ability to find a mark and do the counting? In my eyes, the crocodiles just flash too quick into my eyes for me to count, not to say find a roadmark!!
    So I wonder, is it a nessasery ability foe driving?

      You can glance over to the side of the road to check your marker. Cheers Rick

    Hey Rick,
    So we were talking about this on your livestream last week and come to think, is that why the distance between each traveling vehicle increases with speed, but the time is still the same? I have always thought of what it'd be like when cars weren't around whenever I'd think of the road, and we have gone on some really long roadtrips ourselves, perhaps some maybe even the same as last year and this year, maybe even the distance between two or more humans walking to an event instead of driving there. Wow, how the fuck do these people drive? I was confused on time and distance because distance is measured in how many feet a car is off the rear bumper and speed is just solely measured in velocity. Also we'd need to get somewhere by a certain time. That all makes sense. That is nothing new, but over a span of a lot of cars I've seen on the highway, a lot of them drive too fast, and a lot of them end up in accidents. I also can count the seconds between two cars when one passes a fixed object and the one with the dashcam passing the same fixed object because of the DASHCAM. Obviously, it has a little clock on it that will always tell you the time, and whether it's 2 or 3 seconds, I don't know. Here's the part where it might affect when you arrive to a certain destination, not necessarily work or anything but some place where 20 cars are at least likely to get in front of you. Keeping a 3 second gap of enough space isn't enough to delay us a minute of several or multiple cars getting in front of us from here to going to the movies because there isn't enough distance from here, but this most commonly happens on the freeway. Now traffic only goes faster if the speed limit is higher normally, not if people are tailgating other drivers, and it might make it hard for some people to exit their lane?

      Hi MichaelXD - thank you for your comment. Simplify my friend, simplify! What is your questions? I'm really not sure what you're asking me. And higher speeds do not get you to a destination faster - a higher average speed gets you to a destination faster. All the best, Cheers Rick

    How to count? pls say it one step by another.

    • @englishforume

      while I count, do I have to watch where I am (By something at the roadside?, what should I take?) and I have to remember the car in front of me? How can I do the three things at the same second? Is it a trici? How can I get it?

    I got the size of a crocodile!!!! 6 meters!!! That measn, at 60km a car travels 3 crocodile a second., so you must 6 crocodiles away from the front car. while at 100km, a car travels 5 crocodiles per second, so you must be 10 crocodiles away from the front car. so I needn't count. I need only to have a span in my eye!!!!, that makes it much easier!!!! Isn't that great?

    • @smartdrivetest
      @smartdrivetest  6 лет назад +1

      crocodiles or any other animals has nothing to do with the measurement. You're simply saying "1 crocodile" because it takes exactly one second to say that phrase. If you simply count 1,2,3,4 - you're timing is off because a single number only takes about 1/2 second to say out loud. All the best, Cheers Rick
