I completely agree, but I would also like to add that my take is that unless either EVERYONE is evil or you are actually a sleeper BBGE for the DM, "evil" doesn't really work well in campaigns.
Like, unless it's well accounted for, "evil" characters just tend to be this really cool idea that flops hard when it comes to execution, because either it really jams what the other members of the party wants to do or it drags the campaign to cater for those characters, and often just to them as they behave so differently compared to the other members.
I actually think the "safer" and often more fun approach is with neutral characters, since they tend to be much easier to allign to the group motif and motivation, while still playing that "devil on the shoulder" role that is what I at least perceive as the draw of evil characters (other than the cases I referred to at the start, of course, but then again I personally found that moral tension and sleeper BBGE are usually the main usecases for "evil" characters, at least in my admittedly not very extensive experience).
Anyway, sorry for the word vomit, and I think those are good guidelines to work with. Also, sorry if I said something you already referred to in the short

Another option is a play a group of Lawful Evil characters who are tasked by a Lawful Evil BBEG to help with a plan, like turning that a major demon into a god. The party could be nice to most NPCs and to each other, but will still use horrible means to accomplish their goals where pragmatic, and their goals are also evil.

Most PCs are already evil, just have to shift your POV.

something to also note from my own experience: it is *significantly* harder to make chaotic evil characters work outside of scenarios where the whole party is evil/working towards an evil goal. imo it's best to stick to lawful/neutral evil because it's hard enough to successfully play a fun evil character, let alone a chaotic one.
