- After the annulment of the June 12 election, the seat of power was no more easy for General Ibrahim Babangida. There was pressure on him, at home and abroad. Babangida was left with no option than to handover to another person and leave the seat. This is where the idea of an Interim National Government arose and the most suitable person for the novel assignment was Ernest Shonekan who had kept an impeccable record in the corporate world where he served for several years.
A military Decree was signed to give power to Shonekan to govern the country. Th Decree also empowered Shonekan to serve as Commander in Chief of the Armed Forces of Nigeria. Shonekan's assignment was a strange assignment. Nigeria had never witnessed such arrangement since Independence. Ministers were appointed to work with him and one of the Ministers was Gen. Sanni Abacha who served as the Minister of Defence.
Shonekan faced several challenges and opposition to his government. There were protests across the nation. Shonekan struggled for legitimacy. There was also a judgment of the Lagos State High Court declaring his government illegal. Abacha was quietly watching all these and was planning to strike.
In less than 90 days, Abacha struck and compelled Shonekan to resign and handover the reins of government. This was done in broad day light. No shot was fired and no blood was shed. Abacha just went into the Villa in the company of Oladipo Diya and one other General and caused Shonekan to handover. Shonekan did as commanded and Abacha took over as the Head of State and Commander in Chief of the Armed Forces. He went on to rule Nigeria for 5 years until his mysterious death in office.
This video graphically captures this auspicious moment in the history of Nigeria. The 8th Military Coup is the last coup in Nigeria, as at the time of the publication of this video.

Thanks for sharing past history.
Wow!
You brought me down the memory lane...
Good job mister...
Kudos to you 👍👍👍👍👍
THANK YOU SIR FOR BEAUTIFUL NARRATIVE STORY
Good one...Content well appreciated. Please keep it coming.
I sure will. Thanks a million.
love your videos and the person doing the recording ... beautiful stuff here
Abacha had the first emilikon. He helped others get to power and he eventually got power himself but we all know how it ended
He felt entitled bcos he had participated in almost every coup that had happened successfully in Nigeria
In other words, by making Abacha as the Secretary of National Defense, IBB knew fully well that it was a matter of when NOT if Abacha would take over the reigns of Government.
A well orchestrated plan between IBB and Abacha.
A compensation by IBB to Abacha, for having his back and been his right hand man, all through IBB regime.
Keep up the good work
Continue to rest in peace Sir Chief MKO Abiola
I love history. God bless you
Correction: The Babangida coup that ousted Buhari was announced by then Brigadier Joshua Nimyel Dogonyaro. I must commend your hardwork. God bless you.

@@backinhistory9 you're very welcome
Best channel so far
Sad for Nigeria shoneiken sounds like good man.
Please, someone should help me to tell Goodluck Jonathan to watch this video and think twice before accepting to rule Nigeria again( under APC ) after conceding power to Buhari.
Una no see how general Sani Abacha was looking at IBB
Nice one brother
Waw this is nice and tell me whereis the home town of Buka Suka Dimka?
British Nigeria
Abacha, my man.
All those military rulers was just embezzling money due the people of Nigeria 🇳🇬. Today their families live comfortably while tens of millions of Nigerians live in abject poverty. Image in the 1970s and 1980s, Nigeria 🇳🇬 used to get 25 billion USD a year as its oil revenue but that money was going straight into the pockets of military rulers and their errand boys. Sad.
It is all power politics whether military rulers or civilians. In fact, they are mostly hand-in-glove meaning if one politician is being overthrown by a military guy, the other politician(s) are backing the guy in the hope of getting benefits themselves. Abiola was the guy who decided not to befriend the rule army guy and got killed instead. Abacha also failed his promise and was killed too.
... Can Nigeria have a 9th Military coup, already?
We minitry to take over
thank you
Pls it was Joshua dogonyaro that announced buhari's removal from office not General Abacha
so Abacha was mistakenly appointed as Minister of defense
He was intentionally put there as Defense Minister; remember, he had saved Babangida before.
@@dodi177 to carry out another coup?
Why didn't shonekan hand over to Abiola immediately he was sworn in as interim head of state?
'Cause you weren't there to tell him that, I guess!
I thought it was 87 days that Shonikor ruled Nigeria!.
Well now you for fact
The comments section filled with ppl praising military dictators smfh 🤦🏾♂️ RIP MKO Abiola
