  • In this edition of Back in History we take you back in time to the events that characterized the 6th Military Coup in the post-independence history of Nigeria. This was the coup that saw to the overthrow of Major General Muhammadu Buhari and his Deputy - Tunde Idiagbon. At the time of the coup, Tunde was in Saudi Arabia observing the hajj. The coup was led by soldiers who were instrumental to Buhari's ascension to power but the soldiers soon fell out with Buhari for several reasons, one of which was that Buhari did not carry them along in his government. The other reason was that there was extreme hardship in the country with prices of goods becoming unbearable, hence the need (according to the coup plotters) to unseat the regime and form a new Government. The overthrow was announced by Brig. Joshua Dogonyaro while the names of the new leaders was announced, 12 hours after by Sani Abacha. Now I see why most people were against Buhari coming into power as a civilian President, the same hardship experience then is what we’re facing now.
May God have mercy on our dear nation.

Our elders have really dealt with us. So they witnessed all these about Buhari and yet led us to believe that he was the best for us. Chai! That man can never change.

Good presentation, maybe a bit more information on inner goings on within the inner circle of the coup plotters in the first few days and the detention of buhari and idiagbon would have even made it more interesting. A shorter IBB speech could have made space for these details. But well done, I enjoyed the video

Isn't it funny that all these characteristics are what we see in his present Government? Sigh!

Once again, another master stroke research. Please do another piece on all the subsequent coups. By the way, you had the wrong picture for Ebitu Ukiwe. Instead you had the picture of Wey. Nevertheless, this was very informative.

Pray for Nigeria, and Africa and most especially African Americans and coloured people in America and Asia. The black skin needs serious deliverance and prayer to God. This west and colonism are really principalities and powers children of fallen angels to subdue us ynder the curse of God. Pray and go close to GOD and not human being. GOD is doing this to us through them to know who he is and not them. Please make an alter of prayer of fire, and watch how GOD moves in fire and force for our continents, country, districts and state wherever we are. Africa, and coloured people all around the world must be paid whats due to us and our reperations. GOD BLESS AND SHALOM.

Unfortunately the Babangida regime took the nation even further down than Buhari's government. The Babangida regime was as bad maybe even worse than the Buhari-Idiagbon government they took down!!

Point of correction: Tude Idiagbon was just Yoruba by name but full bodied Fulani by both his parents.

We don't know that one. What the world knows is that he was TUNDE (a Yoruba name) IDIAGBON (I guess Yoruba name too). He was from present-day Kwara State of Nigeria.
