LegoGuy87 yeah but if you’re already driving for 6 days (which is 144 hours), 19 hours is a piece of cake. 19 hours is like 13% of the trip, so if he says “6 days, it’s not even close!”, you’d expect a few more days. 19 hours is not even a whole day, so I feel like it’s kind of a bummer

Then if Japan and Korea build a bridge or tunnel, the furthest distance would be from Sagres, Portugal to Oma in Aomori. The only physical connection from southern Japan to Hokkaido is by rail, so it doesn't count.
There’s a longer one. You can drive from Capetown to Cairo and then Cairo to Khasan Russia crossing the Suez Canal by bridge. They already said bridges were legal at the Panama Canal. There appears to be a problem at Lake Nubia where you have to take a ferry (according to Google maps), but if you go straight at the Al Multaqa cafeteria instead of turning right as Google maps shows, you can stay on the left side of the Nile most of the way and avoid the ferry. This trip would be 14,099 miles, 5373 miles further than their example. Not good for a premier.
The Cape to Cairo route is well trodden by bikers, and you don't need to take any ferries, just cross bridges and many borders. This video is misleading and wrong
The route from Pointe-Noire in Kongo to the same place in Russia is actually longer. By 7302 km.... (It also takes 12 days to travel according to Google maps...) Yes, we "can't" drive from the very tip of Africa due to a ton of rivers without bridges, but that doesn't mean we can't drive from a place very far down in Africa. Now, we can actually continue for another 5+ thousand km down to Durba in South Africa, this still only uses roads, but it does need us to drive over a road that is part of a residential area. So it is illegal to just drive straight through. (but nothing stops one from visiting someone there and then continuing on the journey. (And yes, Google maps doesn't actually want to use such roads if one just plots down two points on a map, one needs to force it to take the road. (And yes, it took me some time to find this road...))) So that means that we can technically drive from Durba in South Africa, all the way to Khasan in Russia while only using actual roads, tunnels and bridges. A journey of some 26537 km that according to Google maps will require 14 days and 15 hours of continuous driving. (Now, this might not actually be a mistake on HAI's part, the video is from late 2017, and I make this comment in 2020.)
@@jamcdonald120 A lot of roads north of Pointe-Noire have existed for a fairly long time and Point-Noir to the town in Russia is already noticeably longer than from the town in Portugal. This has been the case since long before this video were published. In short, the route from Portugal is based on really outdated information.
@@Z3t487 To pass the Suez Canal there is 1 bridge and 2 tunnels to choose from. Technically one doesn't get directly to Europe, but rather the middle east, but there is road connections from here over to both Asia and Europe. But Google maps for unknown reasons doesn't feel like prioritizing this route and rather takes a ferry to Spain/Portugal even if one forbids it from using ferries..... ie, one needs to put down a marker on the highway nearby to say, "I want to make a stop here."
8726 miles in 163 hours is travelling at a speed of 53.5 mph. Let's make it more realistic and enjoyable for the traveller. Plan would be travel for 6-7 hours at 50-55mph which would result in a distance of 350 miles (All rounded to a nice figure). Stay at destination for 6-8 hours sleep, leaving 9-12 hours to explore area. This means 24 hours = 350 miles travelled. Therefore, it would take 25 days to travel the full distance.
Ok, but why do you use miles and on what basis do you choose a 50-55 mph speed limit? Almost everywhere travelled on this route will use kilometres measurement
@@BranMan10 No it wasn’t, and the route he said was the longest isn’t even the longest because he should’ve started in Cape Town and just crossed the Suez Canal

I don't quite get the reason why you can't start in South Africa? So are there no continous roads from there to the bridges over the Suez canal? Or from there to wherever in Russia?
I don't get it either why you don't count the road from South Africa through the Middle East to Russia. Yes, you said "only the shortest routes between two points count", but you discount that because there is a faster route which involves a ferry (through Europe)? By the same logic you might as well discount everything because a plane is faster...
Yeah, that confused me too. I only have one explanation that kind of makes sense to me, which is "because Google Maps didn't give that route". If we're really looking for the shortest routes by distance, then you wouldn't be taking mostly highways either, since many local/rural roads run more straight than highways and so are shorter. That would make checking all possible "shortest" paths an enormous amount of work. So I'm guessing he took a shortcut and just relied on whatever Google Maps said was the best route.
I defeated this in Google Maps. The route you propose from Khasan Russia to Sagres Portugal is 14,022km. And sure -- that is likely the longest "Safe" route (without ferries). In this video, you gloss over the security situation in the Middle East // East Africa. And sure, many parts of the Middle East and East Africa can be dangerous and are dangerous today. However, we are speaking in theory. There are several possible routes longer than what you described. Here is one. If you originate in Khasan Russia and continue across Russia, heading south at Saratov to Volgograd and then onward to Tbilisi in Georgia. Now, there needs to be a note. It will likely be dangerous to go any further. The considerations depend on what country you are a citizen of, what languages you speak, who your friends are, etc. However, speaking of times before Covid -- and speaking as an American citizen -- if Covid ended today -- and if you had a lot of balls -- You could go from Georgia through Turkey and to the Ibrahim Khalil border crossing into Iraqi Kurdistan. Before COVID, if you were a US citizen you could pass through here with a proper 6-month visa from the Iraqi government. Whether it is safe to do so is another question. Now you are in Iraq. The average normal person should not go here right now. Without trusted and secure friendly contacts within the country, I would personally be on the good foot driving, looking to get into and out of the country as quickly as possible. With that said, I would not transit the western frontier. It is very dangerous. I would attempt to blend in by driving through Mosul and onto Baghdad. From Baghdad, you are going to the western frontier with Jordan. Cross into Jordan at Karameh border crossing. Now take a deep breath. You are on relatively safe turf again. If ferries were allowed, you could take a ferry across the Red Sea from Jordan to Egypt and not have to cross into Israel. However since we stipulate no ferries, you need to cross into Israel, likely at the Jordan River Border Crossing. From there, continue on to Tel Aviv. From Tel Aviv, you will head south to Taba border crossing, the only border crossing for tourists from Israel into Egypt. You will then go on to Cairo and overland to Aswan. From Aswan if ferries were allowed we would try to take the ferry to Wadi Haifa. However from what I can find online, I believe it is in fact possible to drive a personal car from Aswan into Sudan. Keeping in mind there are no settlements for miles around West of the Nile in the desert. Although it does not show in Google Maps, from the Google satellite photos there does appear to be a manned border crossing west of the Nile overland called the Arqin land border crossing, opened in 2017 goo.gl/maps/hfmshAym9ENUNUdCA I believe the roads are now done on the Sudanese side as well... In Sudan you will go on to Khartoum and cross into Ethiopia on to Gondar and then Addis Ababa. From Addis you can drive overland through Kenya and the rest of East Africa all the way South to ZA and onto Cape Town. I have never been to SE Africa so I will leave that up to someone else, but Google routes you pretty straightforwardly. Here is the journey on Google Maps -- it clocks in at 23,868km or a whopping 14,080 miles www.google.com/maps/dir/Khasan,+Primorsky+Krai,+Russia,+692730/Ibrahim+Khalil+Border+Crossing,+Iraq/Baghdad,+Iraq/Tel+Aviv,+Israel/Taba,+Egypt/Cairo,+Egypt/Aswan,+Egypt/Khartoum,+Sudan/Addis+Ababa,+Ethiopia/Cape+Town,+South+Africa/@34.4793227,27.0950486,3.96z/data=!4m62!4m61!1m5!1m1!1s0x5fb596808136e70d:0x6e5b668bd85bb5bf!2m2!1d130.651644!2d42.4241158!1m5!1m1!1s0x40091a6e00c2382b:0xd5bd4f7c73073435!2m2!1d42.5710728!2d37.139472!1m5!1m1!1s0x15577f67a0a74193:0x9deda9d2a3b16f2c!2m2!1d44.3660671!2d33.315241!1m5!1m1!1s0x151d4ca6193b7c1f:0xc1fb72a2c0963f90!2m2!1d34.7817676!2d32.0852999!1m5!1m1!1s0x15000b19c6d2624f:0x78755cbe15dafa6e!2m2!1d34.8937208!2d29.4938662!1m5!1m1!1s0x14583fa60b21beeb:0x79dfb296e8423bba!2m2!1d31.2357116!2d30.0444196!1m5!1m1!1s0x14367b5ab1a30e5f:0xfb109fe337cabccb!2m2!1d32.8998293!2d24.088938!1m5!1m1!1s0x168e8fde9837cabf:0x191f55de7e67db40!2m2!1d32.5598994!2d15.5006544!1m5!1m1!1s0x164b85cef5ab402d:0x8467b6b037a24d49!2m2!1d38.7577605!2d8.9806034!1m5!1m1!1s0x1dcc500f8826eed7:0x687fe1fc2828aa87!2m2!1d18.4240553!2d-33.9248685!3e0

Bob MiLaplace the classical world has a meaning, it contains part of Asia and Africa and Europe but does not extend across the sahara or all the way to China
It is possible to drive a much longer distance while following all the criteria you set. We can in fact drive from Cape Town, South Africa to Khasan, Russia without using any ferry. We simply have to cross the Congo river via the Matadi bridge in Matadi, Democratic Republic of the Congo. The total driving distance is then 25 337 km, about 11 000 km more than the route you suggest. To reproduce this route in Google Maps, enter the following way points: Cape Town in South Africa, Matadi in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Pointe Noire in the Republic of the Congo, Eilat in Israel, and Khasan in Russia. Google Maps states that this route would take 345 hours to complete. Happy driving everyone! We could probably get a more direct route by going through Iran and China, but Google Maps stops showing directions as soon as I enter a way point in China. I am guessing this route would be shorter by about 5 000 km, for a total of around 20 000 km.

Incorrect! I found a much longer route! How? After looking at the border of China and Kyrgyzstan I found out that road A371 actually goes into China (39.694859, 73.923347). Google maps, however, did not add in the roads that is in the vicinity of the A371 loop, so it is actually possible to get off A371 and make it to mainland China! We then have to go to Longchuan, on the border to Myanmar. Once again, google cannot calculate any route from China to Myanmar... but it is possible at 23.980239, 97.897083! From there you take the road to Singapore! Total distance: 18,387km!

There should be no customs checkpoints between Russia and Belarus (though you need separate visas and paperwork for both). So technically only one checkpoint between EU and Union State of Belarus and Russia.
I got interested and tried looking for more routes on Google Maps. Apparently you can drive from Port Elizabeth, South Africa to Skarsvag, Norway. It is almost 16,800 km long. Pretty cool.
The longest drive in history was a test carried out by US Army and AASHTO in the 1950s. They drove around a track continuously for years. It was to test road materials ahead of the Interstate Programme.
There is actually a logner route that google maps doesn't list due to China. And An african route as well. You can go via Mongolia or Kazakhstan (Most likely via Kazakhstan) and then on chinese highways, where you can cross down to laos and thailand then down to singapore. Theorectically you can even go via Turkey ->Iraq ->Iran - >Pakistan -> (India if you want to) ->China -> Laos -> Thailand ->malaysia ->singapore. Also, you CAN go from africa to asia IF you have 2 passports, one for... israel. AND if the Taba border crossing reopens or if you can use the upper crossing. Then you can cross into jordan, iraq etc. So the shortest route to Iraq would be: South Africa->Botswana ->Go Via Zimbabwe or Nambia to cross the river -> Zambia ->Tanzania -> Uganda -> South Sudan ->Sudan (Uganda and South Sudan replaced by Kenya and Ethopia for practical crossings) ->Egypt, DON'T GO VIA THE FERRY, GO VIA THE ROAD CROSSING UNLISTED ON GOOGLE MAPS ->Israel (Taba crossing) -> Jordan -> Iraq ->Iran (But a faster, longer route is: Zambia ->DRC->Central African Republic ->Chad->Cameroon->Nigeria->Niger->Algeria->Libya->Egypt (Sure, the visas will be a nightmare) But this route, Pretoria up to Cairo already takes 8755km. (The Chinese, pakistan->India sudan->Egypt crossing aren't on google maps, but they exist if you do some digging)
Note: If you wanted to do this in real life, you would need: A rental car, A LOT of maintanence stuff, spare gas, visas for the countries, A LOT of research, 2 PASSPORTS since you don't want to take the egypt->jordan ferry, you have to go via israel, A LOT of TIME and A LOT OF MONEY.
Also, submiting documents to cross border on your (or rented) car in Africa might take up to 2 weeks per border. And as far as I know, you can't cross Laos border on rented vehicle (may be you may need to hire local driver to go through Laos)
The Cairo to Cape Town highway would allow you to cross Africa on the East entirely on roads, and then cross over into Asia using the bridges over the Suez Canal and drive through the Sainai, Israel, Syria, Turkey etc. to Russia which would be much longer than your route.
Russia had the best roads in my travels even better than many European countries. Kazakstan/mongolia had bad roads but russia was beautiful. Altai, siberia, east russia, astrakhan, chechnya grozny.. etc chechnya for example has this super motorway which was the most smoothest motorway I been on
I may be wrong but from "Google Earth" & "Rome to Rio" it seems you can drive from Sagres, Portugal all the way to Singapore. The drive takes you past Moscow, Russia then from there Xinjiang, China then through Bangkok all the way to Singapore. A distance of approximately 10,508.2 miles. with an approx. time of 8 days 1 hour. - fellow map nerd here =) Edit: grammar and found a shorter route between Sagres and Singapore.
It does count, he just didn’t have the resources. You can literally drive north into Algeria, and then east across the Suez Canal. Brazzaville to Khasan without ferries 13,470 miles, which is 5,000 miles more than his silly Sagres adventure
CBaccari's PC Simulation Channel If you set Al Fashir Sudan and Cairo Egypt as waypoints, then you can get to Cape Town South Africa without ferries, a journey of over 27.000km... this video was poorly researched and argued, considering it took me two minutes to find the "avoid ferries" option on Google maps. There actually seems to be a road down the Eastern side of Africa, but Egypt and Sudan don't get along to well, so I guess you can't cross that border.
Aidan Gardiner it’s actually not possible to drive from Sudan directly into Egypt and go up to the Suez Canal without taking a ferry through the Nile River. However, there is a route from Sudan to Egypt via Chad, Niger, and Libya. It’s an extremely dangerous drive but it’s 100% doable (Edit: I just found a route. It is possible, it’s just not mapped on Google Maps)
FunFact Lister you don't need to drive through Sudan for the longest trip. You can drive through Nigeria, Niger, Algeria, and Libya and you can cross the Nile River in Egypt
CBaccari's PC Simulation Channel I’m talking about going from Cape Town to Khasan, not from Brazzaville to Khasan (my apologies for the lack of clarification). What I was trying to say is that if someone would want to get from Cape Town to Khasan without taking a ferry, driving through Sudan would be a requirement (there is also a Central African Republic-South Sudan route but it’s impossible for a real car to make the entire route because of closed borders/towns and extremely poor road/environmental conditions in the latter country)
Australia has the longest straight section of road in the world including the longest straight section of rail line, both crossing the nullibor.. might not be the longest but it's longest straight section with 0 turns
You'd need roughly 24 hours non-stop driving to complete a 2000-km route. So, no. 12000 km is not close to 14000 km by today's standard of car-driving.

Oddly if the Korean reunification happens then the longest route would have been Sagres Portugal to Busan South Korea.
Yep, that may very well become the longest driving distance should the Koreas reunify.
Then if Japan and Korea build a bridge or tunnel, the furthest distance would be from Sagres, Portugal to Oma in Aomori. The only physical connection from southern Japan to Hokkaido is by rail, so it doesn't count.

That one Kim Jong Un comment nearly aged well there.
Thank you. His reasoning for disqualifying Africa didn't really make sense.
The Cape to Cairo route is well trodden by bikers, and you don't need to take any ferries, just cross bridges and many borders. This video is misleading and wrong

The route from Pointe-Noire in Kongo to the same place in Russia is actually longer. By 7302 km.... (It also takes 12 days to travel according to Google maps...)
Yes, we "can't" drive from the very tip of Africa due to a ton of rivers without bridges, but that doesn't mean we can't drive from a place very far down in Africa.
(And yes, it took me some time to find this road...)))
So that means that we can technically drive from Durba in South Africa, all the way to Khasan in Russia while only using actual roads, tunnels and bridges. A journey of some 26537 km that according to Google maps will require 14 days and 15 hours of continuous driving.
(Now, this might not actually be a mistake on HAI's part, the video is from late 2017, and I make this comment in 2020.)
I found a similar route, starting in cape town via Pointe-Noire, through Cairo. So maybe its new roads
Russia recently reconnected Magadan in Siberia to their road network so it’s probably the terminus of the longest route now.
Did i miss a tunnel/bridge from Africa to Europe?
@@Z3t487 To pass the Suez Canal there is 1 bridge and 2 tunnels to choose from.
Technically one doesn't get directly to Europe, but rather the middle east, but there is road connections from here over to both Asia and Europe.
But Google maps for unknown reasons doesn't feel like prioritizing this route and rather takes a ferry to Spain/Portugal even if one forbids it from using ferries..... ie, one needs to put down a marker on the highway nearby to say, "I want to make a stop here."
But of course you'd also need to take a break and sleep.

This is more do-able and sensible 👍
Ok, but why do you use miles and on what basis do you choose a 50-55 mph speed limit? Almost everywhere travelled on this route will use kilometres measurement
osobowy43 because I'm British and it won't make any difference to the calculations. 50-55 just seemed reasonable imo.

Totally not relevant
I don't quite get the reason why you can't start in South Africa? So are there no continous roads from there to the bridges over the Suez canal? Or from there to wherever in Russia?
I don't get it either why you don't count the road from South Africa through the Middle East to Russia. Yes, you said "only the shortest routes between two points count", but you discount that because there is a faster route which involves a ferry (through Europe)? By the same logic you might as well discount everything because a plane is faster...
I was thinking the same thing. No roads through the middle east?
thumbs up cause planes
Yeah, that confused me too. I only have one explanation that kind of makes sense to me, which is "because Google Maps didn't give that route". If we're really looking for the shortest routes by distance, then you wouldn't be taking mostly highways either, since many local/rural roads run more straight than highways and so are shorter. That would make checking all possible "shortest" paths an enormous amount of work. So I'm guessing he took a shortcut and just relied on whatever Google Maps said was the best route.

It's possible to drive the Darien gap if you are part of an American military convoy.
However, speaking of times before Covid -- and speaking as an American citizen -- if Covid ended today -- and if you had a lot of balls --
You could go from Georgia through Turkey and to the Ibrahim Khalil border crossing into Iraqi Kurdistan.
Although it does not show in Google Maps, from the Google satellite photos there does appear to be a manned border crossing west of the Nile overland called the Arqin land border crossing, opened in 2017 goo.gl/maps/hfmshAym9ENUNUdCA
I believe the roads are now done on the Sudanese side as well...

Yeah but it includes a ferry

CrimsonFox209 Imagine That happening in the middle of the Sahara desert. They would burn in the sun.
Sorry but as others have pointed out, it is possible to drive from Khasan Russia to Brazzaville in the Republic of the Congo with no ferries for a total distance of 21,048 km.
perhaps...but who in their right mind would want to do that drive..?
Alice Soaker There is a land
border crossing between egypt and israel. The problem is you could only come in one direction because if you go through israel first you won't be able to enter syria.
Andrew Long you can further drive to Cape Town if you instead go via Cabinda, Angola..26,270 kms of road route without any ferries! :)
The Israeli-Egyptian border is open to pedestrians, and, with enough paperwork, probably vehicles.
@NusRad you don't have to go through Syria, but you do need to go through Iraq and Iran. You could always just "lose" your passport in Jordan and get another.
Imagine starting your GPS you see "Distance to destination: 13999 km"
12070km NOT EVEN CLOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOSE TO THE STAGGERING 14043km, iiits kinda close
2000km aint nothing tho
And if south and north America were connected they would become the longest route easily.
Max Half but if they built a Gibraltar bridge than it would get ridiculous
USA: *bulids road through Cambodia*
Europe: *Bulids bridge through Gibraltar Strait*
USA: *Builds Bridge to Antarctica from argentina*
Europe: *bulids bridge through Pacific ocean to Australia*
USA: *bulids bridge to the moon*
TheObsidianX I've totally forgot about that possibility, in the future there will be a bridge in there, definitely.
There should be no customs checkpoints between Russia and Belarus (though you need separate visas and paperwork for both). So technically only one checkpoint between EU and Union State of Belarus and Russia.
There is actually only one customs check point between Sagres and Khasan as Belarus and Russia form a customs union.
They say it’s half as interesting, but I think it’s double as interesting.

I got interested and tried looking for more routes on Google Maps. Apparently you can drive from Port Elizabeth, South Africa to Skarsvag, Norway. It is almost 16,800 km long. Pretty cool.
3:53 I think everyone would much rather go the opposite direction, Russia to Portugal.
What's the difference?
@@mattiabosio3983 political differences

The only border crossing between egypt and sudan that is open includes the ferry. The unlisted one you mention is closed.
actually you are right, a new border crossing has been opened on the west of the nile with no ferry
RandomGamer 123 That's really cool, but how'd you find out? Is it another channel you found?
1:12 “But then if you go a little bit this way, you get to America.” Yeah it’s so close that the seasons are COMPLETELY DIFFERENT.
The Panama canal is an elevated canal based on locks. North America and South America are one lane mass.
just 1 border / customs crossing from Portugal to Far Russia, as Belarus border with Russia is not usually checked, much like Schengen.
The Cairo to Cape Town highway would allow you to cross Africa on the East entirely on roads, and then cross over into Asia using the bridges over the Suez Canal and drive through the Sainai, Israel, Syria, Turkey etc. to Russia which would be much longer than your route.
nice
Noice
It's going to take you weeks to drive in Russia, due to bad roads and harsh weather conditions. I am telling you this because I am Russian.
Bogdan V and bad driving
there are not mosquitoes, but roads still will be a huge problem
And if you're an American, you'll probably need special permits to travel through some of those areas
briantravelman only visa, because всем поебать
Russia had the best roads in my travels even better than many European countries. Kazakstan/mongolia had bad roads but russia was beautiful. Altai, siberia, east russia, astrakhan, chechnya grozny.. etc chechnya for example has this super motorway which was the most smoothest motorway I been on
I've been in Sagres (Portugal) and it's very windy!!!
so khasan must be the other end..
DRS Portugal Não o foi em Agosto! No.. it was in August
- fellow map nerd here =)
Edit: grammar and found a shorter route between Sagres and Singapore.
Chinese guys are allowed to drive in China, right? So they could take such a trip. c",)
The energy in your videos has come a long way in 5 years.
HAI without the humor
I'm confused why it doesn't count to drive over the Suez Canal via bridge.
It’s an extremely dangerous drive but it’s 100% doable
(Edit: I just found a route.
It's not half as interesting, it's just as interesting!
0:00 A legend was born.
Australia has the longest straight section of road in the world including the longest straight section of rail line, both crossing the nullibor.. might not be the longest but it's longest straight section with 0 turns
Correction...it's Nullarbor, from the Latin meaning 'no tree'.
Is it from Sofia to Sozopol with a very slow bus driver? It felt like 24 hours
So 12000km are not even close to 14000km ? Explain me this.
20 000 km is pretty long distance.
Difference is 2000 Km
@@jeewanguragain9444 eg people rolling in $14M don't understand the value of $2000
Because theese "simple" 2.000km of diference can take you for example from Portugal to France, crossing Spain, that's a long distance.
You'd need roughly 24 hours non-stop driving to complete a 2000-km route. So, no. 12000 km is not close to 14000 km by today's standard of car-driving.
Now I know why my dad hasn’t returned from the grocery store yet.
