Queen Mab is proof that a great story demands a great antagonist. It's tragic seeing this ruthless deity we're told was once just and benevolent, who first enters the story in response to the desperate pleas of her worshippers being massacred, only to watch as her people, religion, and world all fade away, until even she is forgotten. Yes! I've just answered someone else's comment, about how it would be with CGI. Must be a young man, between 14 and 20, who left that comment; boys and young men are all about speed, loud noises, and bright lights. CGI would ruin it. Without current CGI, filmmakers must be creative. For example: Rather than showing close-ups of a king's head being lopped off, it's eyes glaring, it's mouth still muttering a curse, it's far more poignant and powerful to show the death of a king by showing the shadow of a sword falling, then to cut to a golden crown rolling away, through darkness, to land at the feet of another. This hits the viewer deeper, causing the viewer to think about the implications, if only for a moment: the king, the leader, the symbol of the prosperity and safety of the kingdom, is dead, and his crown, the symbol of this kingdom, is "rolling" away into darkness, without direction. THAT is what not using CGI causes viewers to understand, at a deep level. CGI causes the viewer to simply focus on what we can now do with computers. Bleh.

This mini-series is an excellent example of how to do special effects on a rather thin budget. The producers utilized techniques that work and an overall layout to this world that remains consistent. I'm surprised at how well this has aged after 21 years.
I watch this movie with everyone who means anything to me, just so I can share this magic with someone else. Since I was a kid, THIS was my favorite story. The light and dark contrast, the style, the story... its a true masterpiece that more people should know about.
Merlin's love, Nimaway, reminds me of a friend of mine from the distant past, when I enjoyed the vigour of youth, wine, women, and hashish. She was Paula, beautiful Paula, who had been burnt as a child and scarred. She lived her life amongst us with great pleasure, laughing and smiling, yet would not believe me when I avowed how beautiful she was and meant it with every fibre of my being. Aaahh. The memory of her is such a treasure in my jumbled mind.
Wooow loved this movie as a kid. We had just migrated to England from Nigeria and this was one of the first English films I watched. Ahh time is flying
I remember I was in either middle school or high school, I’d never seen this movie before, but I instantly grabbed it to rent at the Inglewood Public Library in California, after seeing the cover with all the actors on it. I grew up watching the 10th Kingdom, so this was right up my alley, they have similar vibes, and it was good to see the Huntsman from The 10th Kingdom play the King.
The King Vortigern story arc really sold this movie for me and actually was a big influence on an Albion themed D&D home brew game I built. Rutger Hauer did a fantastic job and added so much depth to the point you almost feel bad for him at the end when he has literally only 1 person shed a tear for him.
When I was little I was in love with this movie because of all the magic. I never realized how sad this movie was until I got much older. From then on I wanted to hug him. I've loved this movie with all my heart
Every time I watch this movie, I’m instantly a teenager again! It will always be my favorite interpretation too. So different in look and feel than any other movie I’d ever seen before. I fell in love with every character! And still get misty eyed for what happens to Frik and his love. Agreed! Many thanks to the person who uploaded this magical movie in a quality format. ✌🏼🧚🏽♂️🧙🏼♂️💞
@Gingers Keto Kitchen By why? That is what you are supposed to dwell on, to figure out. Great films do not force feed the viewer; they use the visual + sound to cause the viewer to dwell upon the meaning.
@Gingers Keto Kitchen He couldn't because of Mabs Spells and Magic was keeping her disfigured after her death..all her spells began to loose there power and hence Nimue imprison and scarred face.
@Gingers Keto Kitchen I always wonder why didn’t he try to learn as much as he could from her and be the best wizard, would be much easier to defeat her, he could have been smarter but he was so young anyway lol.
Martin Short, Sam Neill, Helena Bonham Carter, Rutger Hauer, James Earl Jones! what an absolutely stacked cast for a tv movie! It has no business being this awesome
Back when Hallmark made works of art not the romantic clichés they make nowadays. I grew up with Hallmark's Merlin, Cleopatra, Noah's ark, Arabian nights, The prince and the pauper, Battle of the bulbs, Odyssey, Jason and the argonauts, Sherlock Holmes, 10 comandaments etc. Such masterpieces, such days, such memories, they don't make masterpieces like that anymore nowadays 😢
How I love this movie! It’s a true masterpiece, a very underrated classic! No matter how many times I watch it, it never fails to catch and hold me completely. Thank you very much for uploading this wonderful movie!
People might have derided him for his other slapstic roles and thought this would be the same, but he really look Frik above and beyond just a support character or comic relief. He has his own arc and faces loss and growth. When he joins Arthur's army to avenge Morgana, you can see his viciously fighting not caring if a mortal blow strikes him down at any moment. Then afterwards, you can see him sitting with his fellow soldiers, traumatized by mortal warfare and broken inside, until he see's merlin and throws up his old playful pretense on the outside, wishing to make a more meaningful contribution against Mab but you can see that look on his face again when he turns away from Mab as she calls to him.
I can’t count how many times I’ve watched this movie over and over and I’ll never get over that music in the beginning and Merlin riding to Avalon. Thinking back I got to grow up with a lot of great movies and tv shows and this is definitely one of them
Queen Mab was such an awesome villain and character. The books on this mini series were great to. They included a lot of extra stuff and insights into each character thoughts etc that you don’t get in a movie 🎥. For the record Queen Mab isn’t a sorceress she is a pagan goddess. This is Miranda Richardson at her finest.
Watched this when it came out back in the day. This, along with Earthsea and then of course The Lord of the Rings trilogy eventually cemented my love for the medieval fantasy genré 😍 In spite of the rather outdated creature effects this movie has indeed earned itself a place among classic Fantasy movies!
Israel Resurreccion I remember watching it when it came out on TV. Advertisements for “Don Quixote” with Jonathan Lithgo and how good it looked came on during commercials. The scene where Arthur offered Excalibur to Lord Lott and knelt to be killed if Lott truly felt he was right to wield it. It went to commercial at the moment he raised his sword!! It returned and we hear the 🗡 ‘s song being hummed and Lott declares Arthur is 🤴... And an especially touching scene as Lott and his son embrace forgiving each other :)
Thanx for posting. I have watched this little masterpiece more then 5 times and I could watch it over and over again. One of the best fantasy movies ever made.
Unlike a lot of other Arthurian movies and series this actually sticks quite closely to the Medieval legends and Romances. People like to talk about the 'original' or 'real' Arthurian legends, but the ones we know today really came down to us from the 11th- 15th century via Geoffrey of Monmouth, Chretien de Troyes, Mallory and others.
Loved this movie! I never realized until now that the Lady of the Lake was subtly working to stop her sister's scheme from the start ( Telling Merlin about his true mother ). Then she gave him the key to defeating Mab -- "When we're forgotten, we cease to exist..."
I really Love this version of Merlin a beautiful fantasy movie, how i wish i can download it so i can watch over and over again. The story is about Love , kindness, fight for righteousness...

This mini-series is an excellent example of how to do special effects on a rather thin budget. The producers utilized techniques that work and an overall layout to this world that remains consistent. I'm surprised at how well this has aged after 21 years.
I never knew it was a mini series, I thought it was a movie. I remember watching with my grandmother
I watch this movie with everyone who means anything to me, just so I can share this magic with someone else.
Since I was a kid, THIS was my favorite story.
The light and dark contrast, the style, the story... its a true masterpiece that more people should know about.
right this is a great movie for kids too; i cant think of many movies I enjoyed equally at 8 and at 30, but this is one of them.
Its actually spelled Nimue (sorry I hate incorrect spelling)
W0w
One of the most amazing and memorable things I've ever seen on TV
Absolutely wonderful piece of art
Have loved Miranda Richardson ever since
Agreed. All time favorite .
Merlin forgot Mab so much he told a 3 hours story involving her.
THIS was my childhood 🙌🏼🙌🏼🙌🏼 I adore this movie so much, so well done
Ladies and gentlemen, this is what you call a comfort movie.
RIP Rutger Hauer you will be missed. You were brilliant in this.
Was very surprised when he passed.
Wooow loved this movie as a kid. We had just migrated to England from Nigeria and this was one of the first English films I watched. Ahh time is flying
I used to watch this daily when I was a kid back in 2000 along with the mummy. Love this movie though.
My teacher just forced us to watch this in class for the past week. Goddamn, this was one of the best shows I've ever seen
Must have an awesome teacher
Good teacher
I remember I was in either middle school or high school, I’d never seen this movie before, but I instantly grabbed it to rent at the Inglewood Public Library in California, after seeing the cover with all the actors on it. I grew up watching the 10th Kingdom, so this was right up my alley, they have similar vibes, and it was good to see the Huntsman from The 10th Kingdom play the King.
I adore this series. The casting was superb!
Absolutely brilliant and beautiful performances , I still watch often
The King Vortigern story arc really sold this movie for me and actually was a big influence on an Albion themed D&D home brew game I built. Rutger Hauer did a fantastic job and added so much depth to the point you almost feel bad for him at the end when he has literally only 1 person shed a tear for him.
Yes I liked his character too.
When I was little I was in love with this movie because of all the magic. I never realized how sad this movie was until I got much older. From then on I wanted to hug him. I've loved this movie with all my heart
Many thanx to uploader for this quality piece. This is my favorite iteration of the Arthurian legends
Best retelling in film, I agree.
✌🏼🧚🏽♂️🧙🏼♂️💞
And the most accurate one :)
Same!
I used to watch this movie back in 2017 when I was 15. I've been loving this movie a lot.
me too
When Merlin used the last of his magic for him and nimue, he showed how powerful he really was since that’s generally an illusion but he made it real
@Gingers Keto Kitchen that was man’s doing
Mabs doing
I am too glad.... Thanks... This film reminds me my childhood... I used to watching with delight. .... it is the best
For some reason the line,
“I didn’t lie to you, it was the boy - Galahad”, has stuck with me all this time
She should’ve just told Merlin it’s the was boy he needed to bring back, especially since Merlin even said he was never a good judge of character.
Martin Short, Sam Neill, Helena Bonham Carter, Rutger Hauer, James Earl Jones! what an absolutely stacked cast for a tv movie! It has no business being this awesome
you seem to have missed out 2 of the finest british actors, sir john gielgud and the superbly talanted miranda richardson.
@@peterbamforth6453 To be fair Gielgud was in it so briefly it was practically a marketing gimmick to list him in the cast :P
Such an awesome, magical movie. One of my favorites. Miranda Richardson is an amazing actor. Love her! And amazing cast!!!
Don't forget The 10th Kingdom!
The same as me! I loved watching Hallmark back then!
I'll take old school 90s and 2000s Hallmark epic tales over crappy and corny Hallmark romance Christmas movies of today
The music is so beautiful. ❤
How I love this movie! It’s a true masterpiece, a very underrated classic! No matter how many times I watch it, it never fails to catch and hold me completely. Thank you very much for uploading this wonderful movie!
What a joy to see this movie again and it still brought a tear to my eyes. Thanks Frigg. Magic can't work if you don't believe !
Yep, 10 minutes in and already there 💧
Out of all the Merlin/Camelot movies out there, this one remains my favorite! Sam Niell is a PERFECT Merlin, and Martin Short is a PERFECT Frik!
Twenty minutes in "oh hey there's Martin Short for the comic relief"
Two hours later **emotionally devastated**
No doubt, this movie is a complete MASTERPIECE. I simply love it!!!
This was my favorite movie when I was a kid. Still ranks in my top 5 as an adult.
A true classic with one of the finest actors of our time, Sir Nigel John Dermot "Sam" Neill, KNZM OBE
All things change, sister...
It's sad...
But Heaven, Hell, and The World move on...
It's Fate...
This is Miranda Richardson at her finest.
i agree, Miranda did amazing performance on this, as well shes one of the most beautiful actress ever...
I understood she was a goddess already? (Hence why she appeared from a rock and gave random life out at
I think she was miss understood she was only trying to save her enviroment it was life or death to her right or wrong i respect that
Best part of the movie, only competition is Frik. lol.
@@lydellb Frik was never competition! As soon as he served his purpose she destroyed him (removed his magic)
Watched this when it came out back in the day. This, along with Earthsea and then of course The Lord of the Rings trilogy eventually cemented my love for the medieval fantasy genré 😍
In spite of the rather outdated creature effects this movie has indeed earned itself a place among classic Fantasy movies!
Earthsea trilogy!!!❤❤
Unlike a lot of other King Arthur movies, this actually sticks quite close the original Medieval Romances.
Same here.
Thanx for posting. I have watched this little masterpiece more then 5 times and I could watch it over and over again. One of the best fantasy movies ever made.
RIP Rutger Hauer - a great actor and a fine villain,,,,,,,,
Caron Murphy I always think it’s hilarious when the guy says the tower will stand this blah blah blah and it falls. He doesn’t even look or react 😂
Such a great actor. Rest in Peace
Tears in Rain
If they ever remake this it will never be as good as this
This will forever be a true classic... No remake or reboot would ever do it justice!
It's authenticity remains unrivalled...
They would never be able to find a cast as good as this one is to fit the roles and this was a TV adaptation mind you.
Man this film feels like such an epic. Loved every minute of it
“I don’t care what others think, I am the queen.” Careful Guinevere, your Lannister is showing a bit.
I watched this endlessly as a child when a Merlin DVD came free in the Sunday Times - one of the nostalgic memories I have from the mid to late 2000s…
me too, it was always on during Christmas holidays.
The magic of LOVE😢
Made me cry 4 times during the movie
THIS IS STILL MY FAVE AFTER ALL THESE YEARS !!! Thank you for uploading it !!
Cyrillius1 Mine too. I bought it on dvd off Amazon though it's not blu-ray
Loved this movie! I never realized until now that the Lady of the Lake was subtly working to stop her sister's scheme from the start ( Telling Merlin about his true mother ). Then she gave him the key to defeating Mab -- "When we're forgotten, we cease to exist..."
Few people EVER catch that. The Lady of the Lake is a sneaky sneaky lady. Playing Merlin from day one.
I have loved this movie since it came out....I've watched it more thn 50 times....truly...
me too ..
this movie is so wonderful and underrated
The script could have been better
Back when Cersei was queen of Camelot. This will always be one of my favorite Arthurian films, this and Mists of Avalon
One of the best films I have ever seen.
I really Love this version of Merlin a beautiful fantasy movie, how i wish i can download it so i can watch over and over again. The story is about Love , kindness, fight for righteousness...
1998 was a good year
Not for Godzilla.
@@CobraScarlett95 you mean that .. giant t-rex? I don't think of it as Godzilla! ;)
This Guy Knows.
paulorufalco Truly it was, I was in 7th grade.... but if you ask Monica Lewinsky she’ll say 1998 sucked.
@@brandonbuzz7075 HAHAHAHAHA
I always come back to this film every few years. Love it.
I saw this film many times when i was a child, but didnt remebered many things (for example the end) Now i watched it, and in the ending scene, i was pretty sad that they lost almost all of their lifes together but i thought its quite good ending like that too, then boom....magic...smiled like an idiot, some tears too, made me happy... this is one of the best happy ending i have ever seen. Good old movies
Áron Németvarga “There’s no more, that’s the end o magic.”
Finally their time.
I always liked this version. My first girlfriend and I watched this when it first aired. So well made and so many good memories. I can't believe the time has gone by so fast.
i miss watching this movie during christmas time with my family, 2004 circa.
This mini series made me want to believe in magic and fantasy again.
*_This movie has now become a magnificent Classic..😍 It should be remastered!_*
This is by far my favorite Arthur/Excalibur/Merlin movie ever
I watched this movie when I was 6 years old. Years later, I watched it again. So much nostalgia
Great movie. So glad it was put on here to be watched and enjoy.
I remember watching this on tv as a child. Still love it and the soundtrack has always been special to me❤️
And guinevere ran away with Lancelot and together they traveled to a new land filled with gold and stone and they became house lanister
I remember watching this with my dad when I was a little girl and then he took me to tintagel castle and heard the true story of Camelot and arther!! It was and still is one of the greatest legend stories of all time!!
Glad I was able to find this. One of my favorite fantasy films growing up. Had the VHS, and would watch it constantly. Alan Grant and Merlin will forever be my favorite Sam Neill characters ❤
Same here
Merlin is actually Dr. Grant from Jurassic Park
@@jamessparkman6604 Umm I know that? I said those are my favorite roles of his
I was sick constantly as a kid and missed whole weeks of school. My mom would entertain me with really long VHS movies and mini-series. Moses, Gandhi, Gulliver's Travels, Anne of Green Gables, and, of course, Merlin
I'm 17 and I remember watching this when I was little and being completely in love with it, I'd fall asleep to the music
HiMyNameIs [Luna] holy shit I'm the same age and I too watched it as a little kid. You should really check out the BBC Merlin series if you liked this.
After all these yers, I'm happy I've finally been able to watch it again! Such a great performance by all!
