    It began well before that.
    In 1860, Professor Julius von Sachs published the first standard formula for a nutrient solution.
    Modern nutrient theory/composition is attributed to Hoagland (1919)
    The birth of modern hydroponics is usually attributed to Dr.Gericke's application of hydroponics
    His methods were adopted by he US Armed forces, which built several large hydroponics farms on non-arable islands in the Pacific in the early 1940s, Ascension Island, Iwo Jima and Okinawa.

    How can there still be so many hungry people in this world when we can do this?

  • @djjulienl
    @djjulienl 9 лет назад +1

    Though contested, many people espouse the notion that we must maintain a predominantly alkaline stomach/gut environment versus an acidic environment. It's said an alkaline environment is inhospitable to viruses/bacteria/fungi/parasites. The same people then state that vegetables such as iceberg lettuce, though lacking in vitamin and mineral nutrition, are nonetheless beneficial as they alkalize your body. It is stated that if we eat a lot of alkalizing foods versus acidic foods (fried cheese, sugar soda etc., being 'acidic' foods) our immune systems would then be much relieved of unnecessarily strenuous digestive duties and more able to focus on promoting our immune system response. That is, a healthy gut is more alkaline than acidic promoting proper absorbtion of nutrients and not ladden down with processing acidic/sugary (starchy?) food - we would have the body focus and energy resources for healthy immunity as well as fending off viruses/bacteria/fungi/parasites. By the time we are 30 we harbor many parasites, generally.
    If Iceberg lettuce is beneficial, then are hydroponics a solution? The fish tank/hydroponic approach is neat, maybe if tiny robots cleaned the filter lines? I like the large warehouses, even underground bunkers solar powered (as we more effectively learn to transcribe sunlight to stored battery power). However, pumping 'solution' never seemed right to me as a way to make a real healthy diner salad plant.

    Hydroponics is an effective system but it also have some drawback, you will need to purchase some "plant food", nutrition and supplements which may be costly. Before setting up any hydroponics system, you have to think about the benefit of aquaponics system, which could automate 95% of work.

      actually aquaponics is more or less not useful. THousands of growers have tried it but it totally limits you to not being able to optimize the nutrients buy building up the blocks you need and not being able to use any organic or inorganic pest controls because you will kill the fish. Aquaponic gunk will build up in your lines and its not profitable. If it was there would be huge aggrobusinesses using the model. Alas its great for the home grower with a need for fish and some space.

      Greg Espey The basic idea of these technologies are that pest controls with chemicals will not be needed,water and air are easier to desinfect than soil.
      In a modern factory the water and air are desinfected by UVC and Ozon.

    Well this isn't the most economic solution for that issue. The infrastructure and capital cost makes it far more economic to ship food to refuges at this time. Besides you'd need thousands of these to feed all the starving refuges, and I doubt they have ramped up their production that much yet. Still though this system does offer solution for getting rid of long term famine issues.

    i just love how in all these videos the caretakers are all wearing hairnets, gloves and doctor coats-no you are not doing surgery you are raising crops, crops dont care if a piece of your hair or skin falls on them All that cleanliness means to convey a high tech look to potential investors whereas in the real world its totally useless-in fact oi just adds an extra cost If you see a hydroponic video where surgeons-type people delicately snip a lettuce you have to wonder if that company really cares about doing things efficiently or are just doing vaporware
    Economically hydroponics and other such sundry techniques are still nonviable compared to trad farming-after all trad farmers just stick seeds into real dirt, they dont have to buy lab coats and buy electricity for 24 hour lighting among other things
    Beware of investing into such schemes-after all as the videos show, these companies dont even know that you dont need hairnets to raise lettuce

  • @Paulieg691
    @Paulieg691 11 лет назад

    Not completely true. Aquaponics depends on commercial fish food, which comes primarily from non-sustainable sources. Extracting nitrogen from the atomosphere by the Haber-Bosch process provides nitrates (from ammonia)for hydropnics. Other trace minerals can be added. With aquaponics, commercial feeds typically come from oceanic fishes = unsustainable.

    keep in mind that lettuce has nearly zero food calories.. so it has nearly zero utility in feeding people we think of as "hungry" People who are underfed need green, leafy food, yes, but they also need calorie rich food. grains, tubers, etc. IMHO, this is a luxury system, profitable in areas where people can afford high prices for convenient food. I believe it is always worth asking how many calories of energy went into creating the calories worth of food you are eating. Here, with a life cycle cost of energy for building and running the system, the answer is, many more calories in than you get out.

    • @homoinstabilis76
      @homoinstabilis76 10 лет назад +1

      I agree with you about the amount of calories in the lettuce. I just want to point out the little amount of water used comparing this to a traditional method. It could be useful, according to your idea, growing hemp seeds in a hydro system. It is a vegetable with a huge amount of essentials amino acids! Almost 50% of its weight in protein. We just need to talk about it to our governments mate!

    • @jazztocountry1047
      @jazztocountry1047 10 лет назад +1

      Well, it's good to get some magnesium into people and green plants do that very well (chlorophyll has an atom of magnesium where hemoglobin has an atom of iron). Lettuce is easy and high end. There are some higher protein spinachlike plants in Africa that will be good candidates for hydroponics. The only thing that Growponics seems to offer is an "automated" production system. But it's a sytem that rewards capital and not labor. If labor can't buy then there is no market, because capital has no stomach (no need for food).

    • @homoinstabilis76
      @homoinstabilis76 10 лет назад

      Well... I believe that a system for communities in remote areas or where water isn't easily available could be possible. All members will look after it and they will have a share of food to consume or money in case they sell what they produce. Stomach full and money to buy what has not been produced, at least in part! :)

    if someone went to the UAE and ask for %50 and then ask the local Gov. the other %50 for set up and one year operation cost to feed their own people The International red cross would find Volunteers to help run it even there was some lost to the program the Promotional of feeding the Masses with the backing of World Vision and IRC on both sides of the World Would be great
