    Very pleasant vlog Jeff , Great to see the flight of locks loved the boat with all the wood on they'll be alright for the winter, I do apologise if you've said it before but where will you be mooring your boat, take care , 😊

      Hi Robert! Thanks very much - yeah, he had loads of wood on the roof... plenty of sawing up needed though...
      I'm getting a continuous cruiser licence - so I'm not tying myself to a specific mooring / marina. Towards Christmas (assuming I have the boat!!!!!), I aim to head down towards Worcester/Stourport area, which is easily reachable from home by car/train and will book into a marina there temporary if I can, but not necessarily - they may be full. I hope to set off again in the new year to start my adventures properly!

      I actually edited this one twice... because after accidentally clearing the temporary cache on my Power Director video program, I managed to delete all the edited clips I'd done, complete with the sound/light adjustments I had made on some of them... so it meant that hours of work was completely gone forever! (Imagine my reaction at the time?!) Oddly enough, my second version - as you see on here - worked out at almost exactly the same time length as the first.👍

      Yes indeed. I am partial to a cup of GOOD tea. When finally onboard Gladys the narrowboat, I shall stop whatever I'm doing each day at 4.00 pm for a refreshing cup of Earl Grey. On fine days, I shall enjoy it outside on the stern deck, ideally with some Yum Yums - preferably bought from Waitrose (theirs are definitely the best) 😁

      Hi Rachel! Very glad you enjoyed it! The Worcester & Birmingham is a lovely canal and I've walked / cycled along the entire length. I love this canal, the only downside being that in some places the towpath is - well, awful, with huge tree roots crossing over it, or else quite stony - So, either on foot, or on a mountain bike, is the best way (if you're not on a boat!). Tardebigge Flight really is super impressive!👍

    Morning Jeff, nice canal towpath if a bit rough in places to walk/cycle along with some interesting looking boats - especially Cassie's Dream with a chopped up small woodland on the roof & the unusually coloured orange one.
    Lock 36 no. 8 - huge amount of water gushing up from underneath at the side before the lock what's the source of that as I don't know anything about these things.
    Definitely sort out the Brompton to help you cycle uphill, we need you in good nick to show us Gladys on the water very soon!

    • @Gladysthenarrowboat
      @Gladysthenarrowboat  4 месяца назад

      Morning Annie! Misty and damp here this morning ☹️
      Thanks as always for the lovely comment - yes, Cassie's Dream had more wood on its roof than I can remember seeing before on a boat. He will have his work cut out sawing/splitting that lot. Gladys has a multi fuel stove, and although I'm going to mainly burn smokeless coal, I am lucky that we have a limitless supply of firewood here that I can use.
      The only other orange boat I've seen was in Birmingham I think - very unusual.
      Lock 36 - I think the water you see bubbling up is from what they call a by-wash. - When the canals are full of water, there is usually an overflow ramp/tunnel at the back of them, where excess water can bypass the lock and flow into the canal just below the front gates - these can be quite a force sometimes and can push a boat to one side when entering an empty lock. On lock 36, it looks to me that the water from upstream must be entering from somewhere below the waterline - hence 'erupting' as it does. That's my theory anyway! I could be wrong - if anyone knows better, please add a comment.
      My new 39 tooth chainring has arrived, and I have the necessary tools to fit it, so I may get around to it this weekend - first task though is to give the chain a really good clean - it picked up a lot of fine grit on the towpath, and to fit the chainring, I will need to 'break' the chain, remove 4 links, and then rejoin it, so it works efficiently with the smaller chainring. Good thing I like tinkering with bikes eh?! 😁

    • @dcvariousvids8082
      @dcvariousvids8082 4 месяца назад

      @@Gladysthenarrowboat- I used to carry a pin-pusher the split links worked well but if ever the chain were to come a cropper, it was invariably the split link that would catch & fly. Just easier to eliminate the split links and as a bonus, my pin-pusher’s tail end, had a spoke spanner.

    • @Gladysthenarrowboat
      @Gladysthenarrowboat  4 месяца назад +2

      A pin-pusher sounds like a villain you'd find hanging around behind the back of the Red Lion! In the old days I used to use SEDIS chains on my racing bikes and only once have I had a chain snap on me whilst out riding (I hadn't fitted that one myself, it was someone else) - happened while out of the saddle riding up the big-dipper in Llanhilleth towards Abertillery...not a nice experience is it?!
      The Brompton chain comes with a magic-link, so its easy to take off if you need - although the right pliers do help force the special links apart. I'm just going outside now to give the bike a clean and especially to clean/relube the chain, so its ready for me to perform surgery later... 👍

      @@Gladysthenarrowboat That's a good explanation of the gushing water, sounds perfectly sensible so I'm sure you're right.
      Yes, tinkering is great if you like it, awful bind if you don't. I'm a bit of a tinkerer too, follow my late Dad in that respect. Good luck, cleaning the muck off will help rather a lot too.
      I once rode a bike on a sandy beach for the exhilaration of wind in my hair etc & it was a wonderful feeling but unbelievable how much rust formed on the bike within days from the salty air. Took a lot of polishing with Solvol Autosol to get it back to clean metal.

      But well done using the good stuff to polish later.
      I gave the chain a thorough clean yesterday so its all ready now for me to perform surgery - I want to film it, so am waiting for fine weather and then I'll do it outside in the garden - maybe tomorrow with luck. Then I'll be able to try the bike out on a hilly route for next week's video 👍

    Hi Jeff, another enjoyable video as always. A lovely stretch of canal indeed and a lot of locks there, but I imagine the ride back down them was a relief. Hopefully your new change ring will make a difference when attempting those road hills. I haven't been on the bike for about four weeks now. I had the family holiday break and since returning home I have been working many 12 hour shifts at work. I only work those hours, as you know, to ensure you have a reliable service waiting for you when you travel on our trains. My hours are returning to normal soon giving me plenty of time at home so the bike can come out of the shed again. I intend to cycle the Tame Valley Canal in the next few weeks. It's just over 8 miles in length and has 13 locks. I did cycle along it many years ago but probably only 1 to 2 miles of it. Have a look at it when you have time, it's a nice picturesque stretch of canal. See you in the next one Jeff .....How were the chips by the way?.

    • @Gladysthenarrowboat
      @Gladysthenarrowboat  4 месяца назад +1

      Ahhh the chips were excellent Dave and I managed to scoff them with time to spare for my train.
      West Midland Railways are NUMBER ONE in my book - although I'm sure you have put in a good word and ensured they are on best behavior whenever I'm travelling!
      The chainring job took longer than I'd anticipated but I managed to make a video - not as professional as say Brilliant Bikes' version, but its actually hard to make this kind of video using a GoPro - much easier filming locks and boats. I'll publish this one as an 'extra' - there'll still be my regular Saturday one too.
      I think I got to the start of the Tame when I did the Fazeley Canal, but didn't go along it. Sounds like an ideal ride though Dave - 8 miles isn't too far and you can stop to admire the locks if you need a rest! Let me know how it goes. Yeah the ride back down to Bromsgrove was mostly freewheeling - other than when I had to jump off on the rough sections.
      Thanks as always for your support - all the best!
      Jeff

      Hi James! Welcome to the club!
      The last update I had was early in the week - that Gladys's engine "may" be delivered this coming week - I mailed back for more clarity but no response. I will chase again on Monday or Tuesday. My original delivery date was "June/July 2023". Things slipped and then in June this year I was very clearly told 23rd August - so I went ahead and booked a marina for launch. That never happened... so I take their delivery dates with a bucket of salt now. That said, once they have the engine, I can see no reason why they won't go ahead to complete the boat - as you probably know, working space is limited up there so I'd think they'll want to get Gladys and Bonnie (Clive's 40 feet Beetle), away as soon as possible. Cheers and good luck! 👍

      No probs James... - a year, yes I guess you could well be right about that. Its a pain having to wait so long, but it does seem that most Beetle owners are very happy once they are finally on the water.
      Best of luck - keep checking my channel for updates - and once I'm finally afloat, you'll be able to see how these boats look/handle - may help you decide on extras for yours - but I think they're flexible and you don't have to make your mind up about them straight away. Cheers again 😊

    I’ve been wondering what I could give you, as an inaugural bon voyage present. I naturally first thought of fizz, then a hand carved something. But I think the most useful and fitting gift, would be a King Edward or Maris Piper potato. Or I could cover the first with an addition to the last… a bottle of vinegar.

    Great video, Jeff. At last, I have a feel for the notorious Tardebigge, although nowhere as daunting as doing it for real. You are a very stable bike rider, especially on a Brompton, I ride one myself and they can be a bit unruly at times. Maybe we could have a shot of you riding the bike before Gladys consumes the VLOGwaves.

    • @Gladysthenarrowboat
      @Gladysthenarrowboat  4 месяца назад

      Hi Roy! Thanks for the lovely comment! Yes, just the thought of boating 30 locks in 2 miles is enough to make we weak at the knees. The towpath was really good towards the top but at the the lower locks was very bumpy and stony - really NOT what a Brompton is designed for - hence you'll hear the nasty sounds from the suspension block/hinges when I go over rough ground. I used to / well, still do, ride a road bike and am quite new to Bromptons - but time trialing was what I was into, so maybe my straight line riding stems from that. In defence of Bromptons, I must say they are much easier to push when holding the saddle than a road bike is - as it does seem to keep its line well, whereas a road bike's front wheel goes all over the place unless you push from the handlebars.
      Dont worry though - even once on Gladys, I intend featuring the Brompton, as I know many subscribers are more interested in the bike than the boat! I've received my 39 tooth chainring and with luck will change it some time this weekend - so look out for me showing that soon.👍
