    Hello Jeff, that's a trip and a half from Hereford to Aqueduct Marina, bet it was worth it though when you stepped back aboard Gladys, she looked in great shape after all the wind, rain and snow that's been around the last couple of months. That tung oil you used looks really good, be interesting to see how much shine it has on it once it's dried. All the best for now, Karen & Al.

      Hi Karen & Al !
      Yes, its a good distance - but not so bad by train, - less than 90 minutes. I'd have taken my bike with me to do the 5 miles to marina from the station in Nantwich, but as you see on the video, the forecast was largely right and there was lots of rain. ☹️ I could have driven instead but last time it took me 3.5 hrs along the M6 and M5 - which was a real pain in the...
      A few people have said that the oil will dry with a lesser shine, so I'm having to wait and see for now!
      But yes, I was very pleased when I opened the door and stepped inside - must admit I'd been anxious about all the bad weather we've had. Hoping for better weather from now on but it does seem unpredictable these days.
      Thanks for the comment and all the best to you guys too! 👍

      Hi Madison! Thanks - yes, and she looked like she'd just been washed - there must be very clean rain in Cheshire! Glad I didn't take the Brompton, as I'd have got soaked the moment I got off the train in Nantwich.
      I'm hoping the oil will dry to leave at least a nice sheen, if not a shine.
      Looking forward to starting Season 2 of GTN 😉

      @@Gladysthenarrowboat- Partly depends on the oil of choice. Linseed will shine, tung will not exactly shine and Danish starts off with barely a reflection with a first coat. The greater the number of coats of Danish oil, the greater the sheen.
      Just have to be careful using Danish oil. You can’t leave the brush/cloth/sponge, in direct sunlight or in a place of heat. As Danish oil can spontaneously combust. It’s safe once dry.
      Tung oil is a natural oil, gained from crushing, then pressing the nuts of the Tung Tree. It grows in China and the oil has been used for millennia. The nuts are roughly the size of a small pear, slightly heart shaped and a pale apple colour when ripe to greyish-brown in appearance when dry. I don’t think they’re edible.
      Used neat, (pure) tung oil can take 5 days to a month to fully cure. And can form a wrinkled texture. But thin it with spirit and instead of sitting on the surface taking weeks to cure. The spirit helps the Tung oil to be more easily absorbed into densely grained woods, (such as oak). The spirit evaporates in apx. 30mins., leaving the oil within the wood and hastens the curing process.

      Hi DC! Great to hear from you. Yeah, I'm hoping for some shine at least - as there was another tin, of the same make, (I went to Handyman House to buy it - which you'll know is an Aladdin's Cave of goodies), and that tin was labelled matt, but we'll see how it looks when I go back. Thats a bit worrying about Danish Oil!

      @@Gladysthenarrowboat- Danish oil is like a lot of things in life. Treat it with care and respect; and it’ll do you sterling service without ripping your head off in the process.

      Hi Rob! Yes, I'm anxious about how it'll look when dried. Hoping for more than a matt finish - but it'll need more coats anyway. I was super happy that she was dry inside.👍
      Ahh... the series numbering... good question Rob! My idea is to start season 2 when I finally cast off from Aqueduct Marina to start my big adventure. (Around the start of March all things being well). Then it'll be "season 2, episode 1, vlog number 1XX" - my ambition is to make it as complicated as possible!😁

    Morning Jeff, Gladys is raring to go!
    Did you wipe off the excess Tung after you finished? It's supposed to dry matt & you use less spirit in each coat & none in the last. You should be able to forget about the surface then & just get on with using it.
    I'm a fan of IKEA for mirrors & shelves, don't know if you like them or not. My home has benefited greatly from their simple & clean styles.
    Almost time to crack on & start living the dream, you can put shelves & mirrors up while you're travelling so all part of being a live aboard.

    • @Gladysthenarrowboat
      @Gladysthenarrowboat  День назад

      Morning Annie! Thanks for the comment as always!👍
      Yes I went over it again with the brush - it said to use a cloth or a brush. With that excess I did the wardrobe edges. The tin said 'clear' finish but there was also the same stuff in another tin with 'matt', so I'm hoping this type at least dries with a sheen.🤞It says to give 4 coats - the last one being neat, as you suggest. I am planning on at least 2 more coats, but each time means clearing off the worktops - which won't be so easy to do after I've moved back onboard.
      Yes I do like Ikea and have had stuff from the Cardiff store in the past. I'll check their website and if anything looks promising I can jump on a train this week (any excuse for a train ride!). One of the other Beetle owners, Andy, has also come up with an option available on Amazon, which he's used on his new boat 'Mud In Your Eye'.
      Yes, February now, and soon be time to start cruising again. Weather forecast suggests snow for week after next - I hope it won't disrupt my plans.
      Yes, I can fit things as I go along - one of the problems I have wrestled with, is which / how many tools to take onboard 🤔, as I do have quite a good collection here at home!

    • @anniemac3075
      @anniemac3075 16 часов назад

      @@Gladysthenarrowboat Yes I can see the drying process might be a problem between coats, might need a few days living in the marina to finish the oiling before setting off on your adventures to make it easier for you then. Wood looks lovely, very homely.
      Haha, I imagine you have a lot of tools, I'd take a comprehensive but small collection of basics to cover most eventualities. Nobody ever seems to take some form of sharp snippers with them.
      Have you painted your windlass yet so you don't leave it behind somewhere?
      Little touches like the mirrors & shelves will finish Gladys off nicely when you find them. I have quite a few ikea spice racks as shelves around the house, depending on what you want to put on them as they're not very big the bar across keeps things from falling off.
      A nice thick fleecy throw would be a definite must for me too for curling up reading on the sofa or extra warmth in bed.
      Snow!!! 😮 oh no!

    • @Gladysthenarrowboat
      @Gladysthenarrowboat  15 часов назад

      Morning Annie - its fine but still cold here in south Herefordshire. So my rough plan is to stay at Aqueduct a couple of weeks before finally setting off, and there'll be some days when I won't go out for a cruise, so, as you suggest, I'll aim to clear the worktops and do the additional coats on those days👍The window frames don't present such a problem.
      Yes, over the years I have amassed some great tools - though most of them are seldom used in reality now. So I have taken a relatively small toolbox with basics on Gladys now. No doubt, I'll come to regret not including something or other!
      No I haven't got around to the windlass yet - but another option is to use stick-on reflective yellow tape - which I used on bike-mudguards in the past. Quicker solution!
      I've ordered a nice rectangular mirror from an online chandler for the front of the cabin. They also show a nice circular one on website which would look great, but its out of stock now. Plenty to choose from on Ikea though - in fact there's too much to choose from and mostly very well priced. Good suggestion about the spice racks - as something to prevent slipping off is desirable.👍
      Forecast is changing every day! But still looks like sleet and very cold ☹️☹️☹️

    More chimneys on the houses surrounding the Nantwich Station. But then they are older than the houses adjacent to Hereford Station.
    But for shame. You’re from Wales and you couldn’t find any leeks. Yes. Just getting my coat
    But there’s nothing like a good joke; and that was nothing like a good joke. Just fastening the coat.

    • @Gladysthenarrowboat
      @Gladysthenarrowboat  День назад +1

      Can't say I noticed them much - as I was rushing to avoid the rain when I got there! The station itself has won many awards for 'best kept' - although it can't match the majesty of Hereford's grand building.😁
      DC... what can I say about your joke? - Except that you should be on the stage! I'll help you with your coat sir... 😁
