In fact after watching the movie I didn't watch the series again, I think it's because I was busy with other things like drawings and school, but I got to watch the movie again at some point.
As long as there's great artist, 2D animation won't die i'm sure of it. The West is just so obsessed with 3D which is sad, but they're starting to slowly realize how important 2D animation truly is as they're blending the 2 more in order to make 3D actually appealing. Art style is super important
Alright. We know that 2D animation is classic and 3D CGI animation is getting better and better at a break-neck pace, but what if there was a type of animation that was 3D, but had the same effort and tactile feeling that 2D animation has? That's where stopmotion and claymation come in. It is both visually pleasing and difficult to pull off, but unlike 2D or 3D animation, it doesn't have a very costly barrier to entry. At least, comparatively. I just want more stop motion projects because it is amazing.
Except stop motion and claymation are way slower and more labor intensive than 2D and 3D. Pretty much the only major claymation studio that can manage to turn a profit is Aardman, and that's only because they're a cultural institution.
@@splat-trainproductions Yes. All of those are terrifyingly uncanny and creepy, plus they constantly pul you out if immersion since there is not a moment in which you can't see that those are just lifeless dolls with empty eyes. The only good stop motion are Warner Bother's CG emulation of stop motion in LEGO movies, or movies that use the fear factor of stop-motion as an advantage to make scary movies, like Coraline and Nightmare Before Christmas
I'm so glad that I'm not the only one who misses traditional 2D animation in theaters. I know some 3D movies have their own unique art style, but most of them just kinda bleed in to each other for me.
I don't care what these corporates says, we need traditional animation style to return! It's just way more visually stunnning and humanly effortable than CG! Pencils and paper are the most creative combination for entertainment.
I don't know how many attempts it took for me to explain to my dad the difference between 3D and 2D. I was like 2D = flat drawings, 3D = computer virtual puppets, and he still to this day doesn't understand what exactly 3D is, he sees films like Lilo and Stitch and he's physically incapable of telling if the characters are 3D or 2D, I don't know how something that's really easy to tell for us (in most cases, cause there are some impressive ones that are 2D and look 3D and vice versa) and for him is just so difficult to understand the concept of a 3D computer generate space being different from drawings made on a flat surface.
I couldn't agree more on 2D excelling with action. Genndy Tartakovsky knows what's up when it comes to making you feel the adrenaline of battle with endless minute details such as, a samurai's combat techniques (Samurai Jack), a caveman's survival instincts (Primal) and even a jedi's knowledge of both the force and lightsaber combat (Star Wars Clone Wars 2003). Seriously, Genndy's depiction of Mace Windu is the most lore accurate depiction of the force to date. I would totally kill for a theatrical Samurai Jack movie, it would do Genndy's 2D action justice!
the fact that someone tried to say that 2D is more limited than 3D?? they might as well spit in my food and call it gourmet. i dont hate 3D, in fact id quite love to learn it for myself, but lying like that? yeesh.
I think a really good argument for why 2D has demand for a comeback is, we're just at a point where audiences can't really be wowed by visual spectacle anymore. These days in the film world, such attempts tend to do little more than over-blow budgets to unsustainable enough levels that they now bomb more often than they should. Meanwhile more artsy studios like A24 opt to just fund more personally-driven stories for a few mil each, and have taken more of the conversation with each year. Technical fidelity, while still having its place in certain circumstances, is beginning to take a backseat to just good storytelling. And I think this is starting to hit animation as well, what with all the foreign and independent films catching on more. And because of this, I'm very inclined to believe a 2D film with enough major backing and mass appeal, has a dang good chance of being more profitable than your standard big-budget 3D film even if it technically grosses less. Genndy made Fixed at $30 mil, Klaus was reportedly $40 mil. Contrast with how WDAS and Pixar currently hover around $200 mil. The numbers speak for themselves.
I like 2d animation also and the main reason why Winnie the pooh 2011 failed was because it released the same day as Harry Potter and the deathly hallows part 2.
2D movies like Spirit, Sinbad, Prince of Egypt, El Dorado, Treasure Planet, Atlantis, Brother Bear, The Iron Giant, Cats Don't Dance, Titan AE, Anastasia just hit different. The world was so ungrateful to them 💔💔💔
There’s one movie I love called “Flee” (2021; ‘Flugt’ in its original Danish) about a refugee’s journey from Kabul to Denmark that is a wonderful example of beautiful 2D animation!! It’s incredibly underrated imo and to this day is one of my favorite films
Actually many 3d films in the early 2000s also bombed like Chicken little for example. The issue was companies, especially Disney ignored this to push their agenda of sticking to 3d animation and claim it is better.
LOOK, IM TIRED OF THIS USELESS DEBATE *not talking about this video. Just in this general debate that be going on for years.* sometimes, 3D art is better than 2D, and sometimes 2D animations is better than 3d animation, it doesn't matter. it all depends on how well it's made and passion for the product, but yes, 2D animation needs to make a return besides cartoons and anime. great video.
Too bad the movie still sucked, with its plot basically being like the Fat Albert movie or Barbie, not to mention the controversies surrounding Zachary Levi like his political leanings and being an anti-vaxxer, also movies he starred in bombing at the box office
I like 3D and a lot of 3D stuff is good, but as far back as I can remember, I was always drawn towards the 2D things, I gravitated towards things that were drawn, I liked watching the original Disney princess movies made by Walt Disney. I liked the original Naruto and One Piece, I loved ATLA, and it was what inspired me to start doing art something that I still very much enjoy doing in my free time to this day. I like 3D because of all the crazy stuff it can do that traditional animation cannot, but at the same time I love, traditional animation, because you can see slight mistakes and it feels like a human hand made it, idk if I’m rambling in this comment but I’ve just wanted to say something about this topic for a long time
I really can't help but think that if there was RUclips, I don't know, 40 years ago, someone would make a video for "Why Charlie Chaplin Will ALWAYS Be Better Than 2D Animation" or something, it makes me laugh
Remember that an 2D animated movie from Looney Tunes is going to release on theaters this year. Looney Tunes: The day the Earth blew up. It's good to give support to the movie because there is a chance for 2d animation come back for more stories with a theatrical release
I think a large problem is the lack of direct connection between TV and film parts of an animation studio. I feel like they should try to put films based on TV in theaters more often and make more TV shows based off movies.
I miss that 2D isn't in the spot-light, I grew up seeing Disney's Pocahontas and the sensation of 'awe' never left my developing childhood brain. I'm glad I turned to anime, they never abandoned 2D. Thanks for compiling this video, I want to seek out 'Robot Dreams' and I already bookmarked the release date for, 'The Day the Earth Blew Up: A Looney Tunes Movie'
About the limited releases for international films, when I saw the re-release of Spider-Man No Way Home last year, the trailer for Robot Dreams played. I got so hyped! But when the film's release came around it never came out in that theater or any other theater except for this ONE AMC theater. Why tf would you show it to me if I can't have it? 😭
On the subject of 2D vs 3D, I wanna bring up stop motion - my favorite form of 3D animation. What I love about stop motion is that it is hand-crafted, much like 2D. The best part is that with stop motion, you really feel like you can reach out and touch it, it’s like toys come to life. It does however have its own limitations, though stop motion animators and puppet makers have found ways around them. Stop motion is just as rare, however, with only ONE studio here in the US that really produces theatrical stop motion films (that being Laika here in Oregon). Wendell & Wild and Guillermo Del Toro’s Pinocchio didn’t even get theatrical releases and just went straight to Netflix, and I heard nothing about the recent Wallace & Gromit movie in American cinemas (though I’m sure it got theatrical releases over in England - any Brits reading this, is this correct?). So Hollywood pretty much doesn’t like any form of animation that isn’t CGI and isn’t willing to give stop motion a chance either unless it’s from Laika. Even then - when was the last time Laika had a theatrical release? Anybody remember Missing Link? No? Neither do I….. Just like 2D, stop motion needs to be given a chance in theaters, and Hollywood just refuses. It had a nice resurgence in the mid 00’s to mid ‘10s though with Corpse Bride, Coraline, ParaNorman, and Isle of Dogs to name a few. Perhaps this post-lockdown world and era of streaming is another reason why we’re seeing less theatrical releases for stop motion….idk…I know that’s a form of 3D though, when this is supposed to be about 2D, a medium Hollywood is terrified of. But there is a demand for it. At least there’s Studio Ghibli and movies of anime franchises…which only get released in select theaters…
Short answer to the underlying question: 2D animation is inherently an abstraction and reduction of detail down to (often) the minimum necessary elements. Sure, an artist COULD invest the same time and quality that might go into a standalone 2D artwork (even including photorealistic rendering/shading), but it's so extremely time-consuming to do that as to be counterproductive to animation.
You know this 2D animation situation is like the original disney films all over again where you have these original movies that bomb in theaters but the sequels are the big bucks now. The only way to see original films these days is to look at indie projects, Netflix animation content and even foreign films.
Let's not forget the great 2D movies of the past like "The Transformers" from 1986. The animation for Unicron was a beast. Also, the animated films of Ralph Bakshi like "Fritz the Cat" and "Heavy Traffic." Another great 2D animated film, and very surreal, is "Fantastic Planet" from 1973 and "Son of the White Mare" from 1981. Eastern Europe has some fantastic 2D animation.
This is why the upcoming Looney Tunes movie, The Day the Earth Blew Up, needs to be a hit. I urge everyone reading this comment to PLEASE go see it, and convince others to go see it.
Having watched a lot of animation over the decades and even to the early advancement of 3D, nothing can beat a good quality 2D animated show or movie. Its a huge reason why anime and its knock-offs have gotten so popular over the years. On top of that 2D has aged very well, which is why so many classics hold up, even to some of their remakes. It was good growing up with Miazaki, Don Bluth, various late 80s and 90s series, and a shit ton of anime especially back when bad dubbing, gore and nudity were king.
I've seen some people talk about whether or not the original 1995 Toy Story should be "remastered with better CGI" today since they seem to acknowledge it looking dated now. Meanwhile you would never really need to be saying this sort of thing about Disney's Pocahontas, or even Snow White, when their traditional hand-drawn animation still looks as timelessly beautiful today as when these films originally came out. Unless of course the agenda has to be that "they're not CGI" and they ever had to be completely remade as 3D animated films like how they looked in Ralph Breaks the Internet. Heaven forbid. At least Disney's Once Upon a Studio short was more willing to embrace their classic 2D movies being 2D movies.
i know what you mean when mlp the movie and teen titans go to the movies came out they were the 1st non anime 2D movies to come out in theaters in wide release since winnie the pooh which were 7 or 8 years apart from each other
me personally both have their space. i love both as mediums, its just a matter of taking as much advantage as possible with the tools in ones own kit. however one i want to see advanced further and used more is stop motion. it's clearly forgotten despite how many advancements we made. i see constant fan stop motions which are smoother then those of classic movies showcasing that tech has improved. maybe also other practical effects like that which was seen in the dark crystal age of resistence.
heck, 3D and 2D can look really good when melded together (ex: The Prince of Egypt, The Iron Giant, Gravity Falls, Demon Slayer, The Great Mouse Detective, and Aladdin). Both 2D and 3D have their benefits and downsides. 2D animation tends to take longer and depending on the quality, very expensive. 3D animation is more cost-effective, and the subjects tend to be more on-model than with 2D. I honestly think it is good to have both 2D and 3D animation, and we shouldn’t confine ourselves to just one medium of animation.
Yes, abseloutely! I fully agree that 2D Animation deserves a comeback and once again capture all of our ❤✨️ Because it's such a timeless artform! Like, wouldn't it be a miracle if we actually got a new Disney Renaissance?
As I'm watching this, i too agree. I miss 2d animation, specifically the animation style from the 1990, like gargoyles, batman the animated series, batman beyond, etc etc... But also miss the animation style of ben 10, symbiotic titan, and generator rex.
I completely agree. I wish there were more 2D media out there. I always think, why not do both. have 2D and 3D film. Not just one or the other. I do hope that 2D animation returns to more media.
Now a-days most 2D animation isn’t REAL 2D animation. It’s actually a form of flash animation or digital animation using modern computer technology. But these movies and shows either very rarely see release or get canceled after just one project. It’s sad how much 3D has infested the market. I miss the days of watching traditional cartoons every Saturday or 6AM before school on week days. Or popping in a VHS or DVD in and being able to enjoy what they put on. It’s sad how Pixar once evolved and changed the animation industry only to kill it as well.
Honestly, 2D animation is visually appealing for me since it allows for a hugh variety of distinct styles in movies and TV shows which almost makes them stand out against 3D, honestly, I still like 3D but 2D animation is right up my street!
I've been saying this for literally my entire LIFE. I hope that when the time comes, I can make my idea for a major 2D animated film that hits theaters.l and restarts that spark for 2d animation!
2D animation, like the model series of Thomas, has an extremely timeless look. 3D is that one animation style where it will continue to deteriorate over time. Which is why I prefer 2D
Lego Monkie Kid Season 5 has a different animation studio than previous seasons (which was I believe Studio Bones or something like that), but I love Lego Monkie Kid all the while. 2D animation will always be more intriguing to me than 3D or live action shows or movies.

Bambi’s saving Faline from the hunting dogs is another impressive scene. And back then no CGI was used.
You know, I watched the Bobs burgers movie with my mom and sometimes I forgot that Bob's burgers has a movie.
In fact after watching the movie I didn't watch the series again, I think it's because I was busy with other things like drawings and school, but I got to watch the movie again at some point.
2010’s Started with 2D Animation with BFDI
We need more 2D animation
I like both 2D and 3D animation
As long as there's great artist, 2D animation won't die i'm sure of it. The West is just so obsessed with 3D which is sad, but they're starting to slowly realize how important 2D animation truly is as they're blending the 2 more in order to make 3D actually appealing. Art style is super important
The moment this video was released, Glitch production announced a new 2D animation project created by Dana Terrance, creator of The Owl House!
Wait what is it?

There's nothing more cursed than stop-motion. It's only good for horror movies, because it's so uncanny that it contributes to the fear factor
@@almas4663 Wallace & Gromit & every Aardman movie: Am I CHOPPED LIVER to you?!!
@@almas4663 Those Lego movies are CGI.
Spiderman 2099 in Batman beyond/animated Batman style as a series or movie would go harder than drake as a school janitor
Koati- where are you then
KOATI is mexican animation film i recommended as show case art of latin jungles with actual native animals that live their
I don't know how many attempts it took for me to explain to my dad the difference between 3D and 2D.
I’m so very sorry about LA and the people that lost their homes 😔
Please show them some support.
Well, I did my part today by donating some money to the people that were affected by the wildfires.

the fact that someone tried to say that 2D is more limited than 3D?? they might as well spit in my food and call it gourmet. i dont hate 3D, in fact id quite love to learn it for myself, but lying like that?
YES!!!! ROUNDTABLE IS BACK, BABY!!!!
It’s crazy how SpongeBob movie and the simpsons movies are 2 of my faves of all time
I like 2d animation also and the main reason why Winnie the pooh 2011 failed was because it released the same day as Harry Potter and the deathly hallows part 2.
Never miss a roundtable video
23:25 I think your editor can't tell the difference between Simba and Mufasa in 2D
Yeah you can clearly tell that image was near the end of the movie, not the beginning.
Fr lol
Scar: "Mufasa!? No, you're dead!"
I like the design of the thumbnail, hats off
2D movies like Spirit, Sinbad, Prince of Egypt, El Dorado, Treasure Planet, Atlantis, Brother Bear, The Iron Giant, Cats Don't Dance, Titan AE, Anastasia just hit different. The world was so ungrateful to them 💔💔💔
Omg Cats don't dance is so underrated!
There’s one movie I love called “Flee” (2021; ‘Flugt’ in its original Danish) about a refugee’s journey from Kabul to Denmark that is a wonderful example of beautiful 2D animation!! It’s incredibly underrated imo and to this day is one of my favorite films
bruh went from YEY tone to when the towers were hit tone 💀😭 1:17
Actually many 3d films in the early 2000s also bombed like Chicken little for example. The issue was companies, especially Disney ignored this to push their agenda of sticking to 3d animation and claim it is better.
23:36 "Which obviously can't happen...IF THEY'RE TRYING TO LOOK LIKE ANIMAL PLANET!" 😂😂😂😂😂😂
You know what I think a balance of shows going for 2D or 3D based on their styles would be a welcome in the future.
Sending prays and all the love for everyone in L.A who have lost their homes🫡⛑️🦺☮️💕
I mean, Harold and the Magic Crayon used 2D Animation for the Opening and Ending Scenes!
Too bad the movie still sucked, with its plot basically being like the Fat Albert movie or Barbie, not to mention the controversies surrounding Zachary Levi like his political leanings and being an anti-vaxxer, also movies he starred in bombing at the box office
@@erichfiedler1481 bro chill out
23:11 that’s the problem with alien swarm
I like 3D and a lot of 3D stuff is good, but as far back as I can remember, I was always drawn towards the 2D things, I gravitated towards things that were drawn, I liked watching the original Disney princess movies made by Walt Disney. I liked the original Naruto and One Piece, I loved ATLA, and it was what inspired me to start doing art something that I still very much enjoy doing in my free time to this day. I like 3D because of all the crazy stuff it can do that traditional animation cannot, but at the same time I love, traditional animation, because you can see slight mistakes and it feels like a human hand made it, idk if I’m rambling in this comment but I’ve just wanted to say something about this topic for a long time
How cool it would be to see a 2-D remake of the Mufasa movie
Well if everyone would calm down on copyright, I would try drawing that
Yes, 2d animation should make a comeback since we never seen another 2d animation movie until the day the earth blow up comes out this february
I really can't help but think that if there was RUclips, I don't know, 40 years ago, someone would make a video for "Why Charlie Chaplin Will ALWAYS Be Better Than 2D Animation" or something, it makes me laugh
Oh yeah
I definitely agree 2D animation is such a great great art form and it makes me sad how so many people are abandoned it
Remember that an 2D animated movie from Looney Tunes is going to release on theaters this year. Looney Tunes: The day the Earth blew up. It's good to give support to the movie because there is a chance for 2d animation come back for more stories with a theatrical release
It'll take indie animation studios to make 2D animated films happen.
I would kill for a fully 2D animated horror movie
3d only looks good when it mimics and expresses 2d style animation really
Sure would cool if we got a major traditionally, animated, film in theaters again
I’m planning on making an animated series and 3 animated films someday, one being a book adaptation. I want it to be 2D.
0:18 that show was real i thought i dreamed that
Thank you for standing up for 2D I need a job in this industry 😂😂
You know this 2D animation situation is like the original disney films all over again where you have these original movies that bomb in theaters but the sequels are the big bucks now. The only way to see original films these days is to look at indie projects, Netflix animation content and even foreign films.
I'm working every day to keep 2D animation alive and well!
16:53 same , it’s like they don’t think about it that much when they should.
Imagine if the avatar movie revives 2D animated movies🥲
That’d be so sick
It’s their goal to turn all of us into joyless doomers with what they’re doing to 2D.
24:18 I love see the shows get there animated films
Klaus on Netflix was 2d animated but with lighting tricks they made it look 3d
This channel is nostalgic to me as much as these cartoons here
I love both any kinds of the medium even stylized animation ever since spider verse came out
Having watched a lot of animation over the decades and even to the early advancement of 3D, nothing can beat a good quality 2D animated show or movie.
25:59 TMI dude ☹
23:25 Mufasa? That is Simba but understandable like father, like son lol.
i know what you mean when mlp the movie and teen titans go to the movies came out they were the 1st non anime 2D movies to come out in theaters in wide release since winnie the pooh which were 7 or 8 years apart from each other
We’ve still got some awesome 2D animated movies from Japan!
me personally both have their space. i love both as mediums, its just a matter of taking as much advantage as possible with the tools in ones own kit. however one i want to see advanced further and used more is stop motion. it's clearly forgotten despite how many advancements we made. i see constant fan stop motions which are smoother then those of classic movies showcasing that tech has improved. maybe also other practical effects like that which was seen in the dark crystal age of resistence.
Toy Story and Pixar in general prove that 3D animation can be great
heck, 3D and 2D can look really good when melded together (ex: The Prince of Egypt, The Iron Giant, Gravity Falls, Demon Slayer, The Great Mouse Detective, and Aladdin).
"2D can't have complex camera movements" That sounds more like a skill issue to me
Yes, abseloutely!
Your point in clarity is a good one. Animation workers complain about deaths by slave work in Japan & wherever. Hence why I go for comics sometimes
It's not goin anywhere! Especially with independent animators on youtube!
Honestly, 2D animation is visually appealing for me since it allows for a hugh variety of distinct styles in movies and TV shows which almost makes them stand out against 3D, honestly, I still like 3D but 2D animation is right up my street!
The death of the Going Merry wouldn't have the oomph in 3D that it did in 2D.
2d animation has been apart of the world since its introduction
19:46 what movie/show is that?
17:13 I wish this was for UAF
I've been saying this for literally my entire LIFE. I hope that when the time comes, I can make my idea for a major 2D animated film that hits theaters.l and restarts that spark for 2d animation!
2D animation, like the model series of Thomas, has an extremely timeless look.
3D is that one animation style where it will continue to deteriorate over time.
Which is why I prefer 2D
Don’t forget claymation
So, uhm... who wants to tell him about "Knights of Guinevere"?
Lego Monkie Kid Season 5 has a different animation studio than previous seasons (which was I believe Studio Bones or something like that), but I love Lego Monkie Kid all the while. 2D animation will always be more intriguing to me than 3D or live action shows or movies.
flying bark was the original animation studio
