Basically, in both cases, what seemed to have happened is that the people running the contests didn't think to ask artists (in the case of the BBC contest) or animators (in the case of the TNT contest) to just send links to their existing publicly available online portfolios on something like a dedicated website or Behance profile.
I don’t think Shaq is the primary person at fault for terrible animation ownership terms or even the low cash prize. This is *definitely* a case of corporate greed.
I don’t want to believe that Shaq would take advantage of other people for money, he is genuinely an amazing guy and despite what many people think, he is quite intelligent. I met him once when I was younger (he went to LSU with my dad), and genuinely he did many things out of kindness, so if anything I would hope he may have not been informed of this aspect of the work. If anything he may just not have been educated on how animation and the rights to animations is vital to artists.

Openly asking for submissions and then receiving those submissions from a public who could choose to participate or not doesn't seem to exploiting anyone.
This reminds me of the Annabelle horror movie contest from a while back.
Almost the same concept where you make a short horror movie with an Annabelle doll, and you would get *a chance* to win a trip to potentially see David F Sanburg, the Director of Annabelle, and receive a cash price of $50 dollars (so much money I know).
But what WB didn’t tell you, but was said in the contract in small print, was that they owned the concept of your short movie you sent, whether you won or lost, for 5 years and you couldn’t do anything about it…

he endorsed it. if he was unaware of the details, he's less at fault than the corporate suits who wrote the contract terms - but he still carries some responsibility. he's famous, a role model for countless people over the years, and throwing his reputation behind something like this without doing due diligence _would_ be his responsibility.
however, if - _and I must stress that this is an if_ - he was aware of the details of the contract? that's something else entirely.
