The full interview in June 1990 of Yankees Principal Owner George Steinbrenner with Mike Francesa and Christopher "Mad Dog" Russo on "Mike and the Mad Dog" on WFAN
The best in the business and we’re pioneers. There is no “first take” or “undisputed” without Mike and the Mad Dog. That’s why I give Stephen A credit for bringing Dog on wednesdays because of the relationship that he had with them in the past. It’s great TV now and was incredible radio then👍🏿
Especially in light of Mike's disclosure a couple years back that most of the pre-2000 Mike and Mad Dog catalog was lost. Which is almost unfathomable in the digital age.
one of the best interviews Mike and the Mad Dog has ever done this is probably one of the greatest interviews in the history of Sports Talk R I P George Steinbrenner
This is a BRILLIANT INTERVIEW. George Steinbrenner was as transparent an owner as there ever has been. He could be the greatest owner in the history of sports. Mike and the Mad Dog asked all the right questions. Classic content.
Rare interview in which everyone looks good. Dog & especially Mike, do not back down from asking tough questions, and Big Stein does not duck away from answering everything. This is the best sports related interview I've ever heard. RIP.
It is really good. Not a big Yankee fan but I miss Steinbrenner. So many owners across all professional sports know how to work the system and make a buck regardless of wins and losses. Steinbrenner wanted to win and was a great character. Put his money where his mouth was.
@@topspot4834 it’s a reference to George Steinbrenner’s Seinfeld character (voiced by Larry David), the character would refer to himself as “Big Stein”
From 1 newyorker to another, thank you so much George for all you did for your fans!! U were the biggest Yankees fan of all. Rest in comfort as your anniversary approaches ❤ LETS GO YANKEES!!! 2024

Amazing George saying this in 1990 changing the franchise strategy and the results that followed with the last great dynasty of the century and 4 World Championships, one of the best owners in sports history
The Boss turned out to be right....on the precipice of a dynasty. He let Stick Michael run with the farm and they got it right. I have not listed to this in quite some time. Makes me miss Mike and Dog together, wow. One of the best if not the best sports interview of all time IMHO . George handled himself so well here. what a gem
Steinbrenner was a man of character. All you have to do is listen to this interview to find out. The guy had the gift of patience and tact. I wish I was as tactful as him
Wow i havent heard this in years, 2 against 1, all 3 know their stuff, rapid fire debate, no stone left unturned, the pace was relentless amazing radio ...gotta be the greatest sports interview in history!
Great interview. The Boss actually sounded kind of humble here. The players he mentioned like Nokes, Mel Hall, Steinkeiwicz,, Sax, and Kelly were blasts from the past.
I feel like if you had an interview with any manager today it would be tight lipped, im surprised at how much info George let out, really showed his personality through this interview, this is a real treasure here!!
To you young Yankees fans, I remember these days!! They were hard!! We are spoiled lately, but I never take anything for granted, cause I remember the dog days...now, we have a shot every year at the playoffs....
I wasn’t alive during this interview but from watching plenty interviews you can tell maddog and Mike were extremely prepared. I often see some of my fav shows tuck their tail between their legs when they have a big guest on. Mike and maddog were slobbering at the mouth for this interview. Rip boss!!!
100% spot on. 99% of sports interviews, especially with A list guests, are just pathetic at this point. Scared, weak questions that just praise the person because they know they could lose access in a heartbeat if they go anywhere tough. Respect to all involved here for doing a great job. I'm too young also to have been around for this (and not from New York) and it's such a breath of fresh air to hear compared to today's sycophant sports media.
Listening to this interview in the year 2023, I would have ran through a wall for George Steinbrenner. There are certain men that you do that for and he was one of them.
George you were one if a kind but you were our Boss real Yankees you restored the glory baseball history cannot be talked about without mention your name Bless you Boss
Tremendous on both ends. George stayed to the end. And, he took heat and stayed calm. Conducted with dignity... I miss all three. I realized only one is deceased. Great radio. Never be another duo as good...
Lol. “You’re interrupting my filibuster”. And “Do you believe everything you read in the newspaper?” “It depends on what kind of food they’re serving” hahahaha. George was classic!
It's interesting to hear how honest and vocal both sides were back in the day. Today when execs are interviewed the questions are bland and the responses blander. The hosts want the guests to come back, and the guests don't want an internet controversy exploding if they criticize someone.
George's draft highlights that year (June 4, 1990): Andy Pettitte was drafted by the Yankees in the 22nd round, but did not sign. Jorge Posada was drafted by the Yankees in the 24th round. Player signed May 24, 1991. Shane Spencer was drafted by the Yankees in the 28th round. Player signed June 7, 1990.
The Cincinnati Reds let go of Tommy Helms after he managed the last 37 games of the 1989 season (marred by the permanent ban of player-manager Pete Rose). October 13 saw the hiring of former Yankee front officeman Bob Quinn as general manager. Pinella was hired by the Reds on November 3, 1989 on a three year deal for $350,000 after getting approval from Steinbrenner to be released from the personal services contract that paid Pinella $400,000 each for two years.[22] Piniella managed the Cincinnati Reds from 1990 through 1992. In his first year, the Reds won the World Series in a four-game sweep of the heavily-favored Oakland Athletics, who were the defending champions. The sweep over a team with twelve wins more than the 91 win Reds was considered a massive shock, and it was the first Reds title since 1976. His three-year contract totaled over $1 million.[22] The honeymoon with the Reds would not last long. The 1991 team saw them finish under .500, but the most noted moment was an outburst by Pinella in an August game. Gary Darling overturned a call that cost the Reds a home run, and after the game, Pinella accused Darling of being biased against the Reds. Two months later, Darling and the Major League Umpires Association sued for defamation to the tune of $5 million against Pinella. When he asked owner Marge Schott for help, she did not budge on helping with paying for a lawyer, which Pinella had to do out of his own pocket. While he stated that realized his own error in making the statement against Darling, the fact that he received no backing from the Reds played a key part in him not wanting to manage there (as for the lawsuit, it ended in compromise, with Pinella issuing a statement).[23] Following his third season, he announced in October that he had rejected a contract extension.[24] He finished with a record of 255 wins and 231 losses.[21] He was replaced by Tony Pérez, who was fired 44 games into the season for Davey Johnson. Since Pinella's departure, the Reds have won only one postseason series.
Damn....Chris sounds young and energetic and Mike sounds like a fucking accountant sitting there with his long island accent & sounds like Barney from The Simpsons !
He makes interesting points about the draft system. It is actually ridiculous when you think about it. If a team is trash because an owner doesn't spend their money to better their team or spend money at all, they are rewarded with draft picks. That's stupid. These are billionaires, if the team constantly sucks, open up your wallet or gtfo. They shouldn't be rewarded like a charity case. The draft system has also inevitably led to the whole concept of tanking, which is a huge detriment to sports. If teams weren't rewarded for losing then you'd never see that obviously. You'd still have competitive games to the end with players trying to win jobs for the next season and teams trying to build chemistry and momentum into the offseason.
Yankees would have had a dynasty had they kept the young players in the 80s, Willie Mcgee, Jay Buhner, Fred McGriff, Doug Drabek, Jose Rijo and others. Good thing George kept his word because the old George would have traded Bernie, Mariano, Posada, Pettite.
TheNYJets15 Probably, “I like the guy; he’s a humble man, and I have nothing against his character. Great power too, the guy’s a heck of a ballplayer. HOWEVER, if that sum bitch doesn’t get his strikeouts down, he’s in my office and I’m strangling him.”
Whether was George Stainbrenner or Brian Cashman or the Wilpon’s or any athlete except A-Rod Mike and Dog had the balls to ask tough questions without sounding phony or soft!!
Oh come on! In the 1970s-90s GS made the Yankees the legendary Yankees. Now that he is gone, all you have to do is look at his history as an owner. Case closed. 'Forget a-bout it already!!!'
It actually started in 90. You don't get younger draft picks, especially first round picks, overall 1 picks unless you finish last with the worse record. In 1990, they finished last. Bryan Taylor was the first pick over all. Even though that fucked up. But Jeter in 92. Different story, and etc. They only had bad seasons in 91, and 92 with mediocre teams while the top draft picks and so on players in the farm were rebuilding. 93, they were close, except Toronto won. 94 was there year, but the strike. 95 was the beginning, but fell short. Now 96...it took off.
U won’t see an owner do this ever again. They are too chicken to face hard questions!!! Look at the Wilpons cowering in their mansion!!!! Him and Jerry Jones best owners in pro sports hands down!!!
