Armadillo is the most loyal sidekick. Miguel and Tulio aren’t even aware that they saved armadillo in the jungle and that was why he started to follow them. They were just cutting through the vines and happened to cut a tree branch where a snake was about to attack armadillo.
It explains not only why he follows them, but also why he was okay with being used as a ball in the game. He owed them his life.

I watched this movie way back when because I'm an Elton John fan, otherwise I may not have given it a second thought, but wow, I'm so glad I did. Possibly the most underrated animated film out there. Loved watching you guys fall in love with it too!

"Oh, then I suppose you'll be wanting these back?"
    "Hey... how'd you get those?"
    "WHERE was she KEEPING them?"
Fun Fact: Started as a tribute to the "Road To" series of movies starring Bob Hope and Bing Crosby.
Historical Fact: The name of the Spanish General in the movie is Cortes, but in real life, the man who tried to find El Dorado (The City Of Gold) was Gonzalo Pizarro.
Music Enthusiast Fact: The Backstreet Boys performed "Friends Never Say Goodbye" with Sir Elton John on the soundtrack, but not in the movie. In that same year, A.J. McLean could not perform with the other Backstreet Boys for London's Party in the Park concert tour because his grandfather had surgery. For that reason, Elton temporarily replaced him.
Lost In Adaptation Fact: The story is loosely inspired by Rudyard Kipling's The Man Who Would Be King (1888), featuring con men who try to trick the natives of an isolated city in Kafiristan, with disastrous results. The Man Who Would Be King (1975) is a more faithful adaptation, starring Sean Connery, Michael Caine, Saeed Jaffrey, and Christopher Plummer as Kipling/Narrator. I highly suggest the 1975 movie go on the list.

I actually owned this movie on VHS when I was a teenager. I haven't seen it in 20 years though. Funny that you mentioned enjoying the music because it was done by the musical team that did the music for The Lion King six years earlier. Hans Zimmer did the score, partnered by John Powell here instead of Lebo M., and Elton John and Tim Rice wrote the songs. So that's why the music is so good.

(Apologies, this got long. Enjoyed the reaction, I have nostalgia about this film, so I waffled.)
I loved this ridiculous film immediately with my entire heart. I watched it the theatre as a teenager, I went on a whim one afternoon when I had skipped my classes after lunch (shh :p) I watched it all the way to the end of the credits, left the theatre, bought another ticket, and turned right back around and watched the next screening as well. And then saw it again 7 more times before they stopped showing it (and so many more since then). I remember nothing from any classes I took that year, but I can quote this film almost verbatim, lol. (my brain is an odd place). It's always been desperately underrated, I had the whole theatre to myself every time. It's beautifully animated, the music is great, the characters are loveable, and it doesn't try to do anything but tell a simple story very well.
I've heard this film described as "The rogue and the bard split from the main party and go on a sidequest" and I love that so much :D This whole thing could absolutely be a DnD game. Miguel rolled a nat 20 on that acrobatics check to get the final ball through the hoop (just as the DM's sand timer ran out on the puzzle) and I can 100% hear a DnD table having that planning conversation on the ship ("in the dead of night" etc)
5:40: "Seagulls only fly out to sea to die" THANK you! You're the only reactor I've ever seen appreciate the whole of that layered joke. Joy!: A seagull, must be close to land! Despair: It's a dying/dead seagull. Joy (tempered): Dead seagull = lunch? Despair!: Shark.
It's just a perfectly constructed visual joke that I've always enjoyed, (which I have obviously utterly ruined by explaining) and I've never seen a reactor catch that first part.
(Aside: The seagull thing IS a myth, they don't deliberately go out to sea to die, they just sometimes...die at sea, because it's a dangerous place. But it is a oft-repeated myth that's been around for a very long time, and it fits what Miguel and Tulio would know of the world, plus it's still widely enough believed today for this joke to land. [/waffling] ANYWAY, I just liked that you appreciated it too. )
Re: the volcano, that moment is probably the best support for a common fan theory that makes the whole film make a little more sense, which is: The exposition song at the start ("This glorious city" etc) is TRUE in this universe. The gods really did build El Dorado 1000 years ago, and DID send these two knuckleheads to save it, they just didn't TELL them. And the prophecy was a real prediction (just misinterpreted as them being "gods" themselves.) From the lucky 7 on the dice, and the apple that falls from the basket, to Chel running into them at the rock, they were sent rolling towards the city like a couple of pinballs in a machine, with the gods knowing their presence would cause the chain of events that lead to the city staying hidden.
Also, that the armadillo is a tiny god or a spirit of some kind. It's involved every time they have a lucky escape or convince people of their "divinity", like the volcano actually stopping when Tulio yells at it. (Iirc the armadillo part was meant to be true in canon originally, but it was mostly cut out. It's still somewhat implied though. That lil guy KNOWS things. Altivo too.)
"All of the sacred writings say you will devour the wicked and unrighteous" these sacred texts of prophecy came from somewhere. It seems appropriate that the only person in the city who qualifies was devoured by the mouth of Xibalba, and met a terrible fate. Just as predicted.
I always feel bad for Tzekel-Kan at the end. Yeah he was awful, but he really believed he was fulfilling his purpose, and if the gods really are pulling the strings in this universe then they did him dirty AF. The look on his face when he finds the waterfall closed is so well animated, the confusion after being SO certain. Can't help but feel for the guy as he's dragged away from his home.
Of course, another theory that ties into the previous ones is that not all of the gods want the city to be saved, and Tzekel-Kan serves one of the others (maybe unknowingly). Who knows. Lots of room to theorize about the worldbuilding, lol. (Yes, it's based on somewhat "historical" places and figures, like Cortez, who did exist, but this is clearly a world with slightly different physics, magic, etc so it's fun to roll out the red thread and the pinboard sometimes).
Yes, I have thought about this too much. I told you, my brain is an odd place.
Yeah, the animation of the stone jaguar is magnificent, I love how it moves, you get a sense of the weight of it as it passes through the space. It ISN'T graceful, it can't change direction quickly, it has momentum, it moves exactly like you'd expect several tons of magically animated rock to move, and the attention paid to sound design so that it SOUNDS like stone is fantastic. The cuts from the creature back to the high priest are great too. That whole sequence is just *chef's kiss *
This rambling train of thought was bought to you by overthinking, caffeine, nostalgia, and ADHD.
Tl:Dr: Great movie, great reaction! I know this comment is SO late, only found this reaction today.
If you ever see this comment, as far as recommendations, you might enjoy the Dungeons and Dragons: Honor Among Thieves movie (the 2023 one, NOT the older one, lol) random I know, but The Road to El Dorado does have a very DnD feel to it and honestly, similar vibes. It doesn't have many fluffy animals, but the owlbear is pretty neat? :p

Please react to a movie called "Mary and Max". It's a claymation movie (stop motion with clay) and it's not for children (its PG13) because even when it's very funny, it deals with some strong adult themes and it's very intense emotionally, but it's such a work of art and it's so beautiful.
