As someone said, "There is a moment you realize your Grandparents were way cooler than you will ever be."
Well its a Black American thing...so cool is what it is
Yup
I just can’t believe the number of people who have never been exposed to the classic’s. Some songs are in the elevators or background music in the grocery store…these guys are hands the best dancers ever! Cab Calloway was even in the Blues Brothers movie.
80 years ago! 80! The Nicholas Brothers were the greatest of all time.
Im a white ,ex dancer, and fell in luv with them. A yr ago I had a garage sale and showed this to a neighbor and people gathered around. Everyone was so happy. ❤
Nicolas brothers are still revered in the dance world as one of the best ever.
When they retired from performing, one became the head of the modern dance department at Harvard and the other at Radcliffe.
One thing that I think a lot of people overlook: When they're doing the jumps and landing the splits on the beat, the timing is all down to gravity. That means not only did they have to know how to jump and do the splits, but they had to know exactly how high to jump to come down at the right time, and be able to repeat it.
The Nicolas brothers were definitely the greatest dancers ever no contest!
They were the reason why I wanted to start taking tap dancing lessons when I was 4.
@@almostfm I think you get the hang of that quite fast.
The Nicholas Brothers are the G.O.A.T.
They choreographed the routine and did this in 1 take. Unheard of in todays movie industry.
with no rehearsal. Fayard said he had the idea in his head I was like gtfoh lol incredible!!!!
Actually, the Brothers said they did many takes of 16 bars each. But the last splits probably only did once
#FACTS
Because today, the art of blocking a scene and rehearsing it and the camera movement is too much work for lazy filmmakers.
One. Take.
Gregory Hines said any movie about them would have to include CGI because no one could imitate their moves.
Or they could get some look-a-like actors and use real footage of the Nicholas Brothers.
Fred Astaire called this the BEST ever recorded dance in a movie or in a theater.
And he would know, he was a fabulous dancer himself!!
@@EmmaChihuahua81 there's a video on here for fred dancing with them as kids
@@SingDanceKC probably the better situation - we see the look alike actors not dancing, then when it's something official then we just use their movies. I think there's some of them dancing as children
The athleticism and strength of the Nicholas Brothers was off the charts! Make no mistake, they were athletes as well as great entertainers.
The Nicholas brothers always blow me away. Their dancing deserves to be seen and shouted about! Great! Great! Great!
Cab Calloway and the Nicholas Brothers were the absolute cream of the crop just as separate acts by themselves.... but together on the same stage, and the entertainment level in such a short time on screen is meteoric.
Giants indeed walked the Earth back in the day....
That's what I call talent. They weren't even breathing hard. Nobody I know today could pull that off, especially in one take. Couldn't even come close. 😎🇺🇲👍🌟💯
The dancer are the Nicolas brothers, they are consider the ultimate dancer of their time and to this day
And this is why I love old black-and-white movies. Every time I see the Nicolas Brothers, it makes me smile and want to jump up and move around. Cab Calloway was no slouch either. Thanks for doing this clip. It's one of my favorites.
If you don't do "Calloway Boogie" or "Minnie the Moocher," you're missing a lot of Cab Calloway. My late paternal grandparents were massive fans of his music when he came on the scene back then, swing dancing together in their farm house kitchen while cooking supper after a long day of sharecropping. They passed that love to my dad who passed it to me. Nobody in my family can sit still when Cab's playing.
thanks, Starlee - what a great memory!
Agreed! My grandmother used to sing "Minnie the Moocher" to all her grandkids...it's one of my favorites! ❤️
Yes! That song is in the blues brothers movie 😍🤩👍
I love that story. In the middle 70s my dad took to SF as a kid for NYE but my surprise we also got to see Cab Calloway live and in person and get to do the shout back. I'll forever have goosebumps...
You don't see dancing like this anymore. I grew up on these old movies, thanks to my mom.
That my friends, is what you call a performance! ❤️ Remember, there’s no fancy camera work, no auto tune, no take 12. Just raw, beautiful talent. Damn! Thanks for this reaction.
Anyone else rewind to see his facial expressions when they were doing splits?! 🤣🤣 priceless!
😂 😂
First time I have seen him speechless. LOL
Yup!😂🤣😂🤣
🤣🤣😂😂🤣🤣😂😂
It's o the best dancing number I've ever seen, glad you liked it. Hugs from Sweden.
No saxophonists were kicked in the head during this performance. Cab's band were the house band at the Cotton Club for a looong time.
You witnessed the greatest dance sequence of all time unrehearsed and in one take. Fred Astaire said this was the greatest he ever saw
You can practice 5 hours a day for the next 20 years and not even come close to what the Nicholas Brothers just accomplished.
-Al
These guys were almost SUPERNATURAL, dude!!!!! 🙃👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻✌️
Their legs had to have muscles of steel. Doing those splits were awesome, but that they pulled themselves back up witth only their legs was incredible!! Phenomenal control and talent.
There’s a movie called Tap (1989). It’s starred Sammy Davis Jr. and Gregory Hines. But it also starred all the legendary tap dancers from back of the day. Harold Nicholas at the age of 68, still had those legendary moves. Now that’s a film you should take the time to see.
👍
Yo...Harold Nicholas did the SPLIT at 68 in that movie! FU#$king amazing!!
Absolutely LOVE that movie!
AND JUST SO YOU’LL KNOW, ALL OF THESE GUYS MADE APPEARANCES IN JANET JACKSON’S VIDEO “ALRIGHT” AND “WHEN I THINK OF YOU”
and the crazy thing is they did that in ONE TAKE!!
This is when there was talent and people worked hard on their talent . Music brings people together things where not has good then but people still enjoyed GOOD MUSIC AND TALENT which is a lost art today.
One of the best performances on the silver screen. Never get tired of seeing it. Cab was the best at what he did.
You're reaction to the Nicholas Brothers is perfect and very common. Not too many people these days understand how influential they were to modern dancing. I'm a professional dancer myself and I have loved the Nicholas brothers for years and still am amazed at what they do. But you will not believe all the influence from these old dancers in movies. Breakers didn't start in the 1970's in the Bronx, it goes back many decades before.
Check out a clip from the movie "Hellzapoppin" with Whiteys Lindy hoppers. No singing, just unbelievable dancing.
See cab Calloway on the first blues Brothers movie before he passed, at an old age he was still phenomenal!
Going into the splits is tough. Getting up without using your hands....that hurts just thinking about it.
📣 _For Real!_
Dancing is one of the best ways to get in shape!
You should check out the movie, "Stormy Weather" that this clip was from. It had all the great Black talent from that day-Lena Horne, Cab Calloway, Nicholas Bros, Fats Waller, Bill Robinson, and Dooley Wilson (the piano player "Sam" from the movie Casablanca). It is a classic Black Musical.
It's a classic musical in any colour! The story is nothing to shout about but, man, the music and dancing is incredible!
Now you know why old timers laugh at today's so called "artists".
📣 💯!!!
They ain't got nothing on old school..
@@oreally8605 no fucking way… this is true talent
The best tap dancers that ever lived. Truly. No one can replicate them, two amazing men as well.
Interestingly Cab Calloway and Benny Goodman were some of the first bandleaders to publicly perform with integrated bands. A small step, but an important one.
In the 40's rock n roll was only a glimmer in someone's eye. The blues surely made its mark on RNR, but the music of the time was called swing and big band. A great video to watch for an example of the awesome dancing found throughout history would be under the title "'Step Back In Time' - Old School Dance Mashup." The song playing for the video coincidentally goes with everyone's dance routine as well.
The athleticism, flexibility, and grace of those guys was incredible. If they'd trained in martial arts, they'ld both be fricken Batman......Batmen?
Before "You Think You Can Dance" there were these guys, killing it, lol.
You should watch The Blue Brothers movie.
Cab Galloway is in it.
He sings Minnie the Moocher near the end of the film. The audience sings along with him. This is about forty years after this clip was made.
I love the scene where the boys were outside, creepin to the beat of Minnie the Moocher!
The Nicholas Brothers are LEGENDARY TAP DANCING. CAN'T NOBODY I MEAN NOBODY CAN TOUCH THEM TAP DANCING !!!😂😂😂👍👍👍
Gene Kelly once said that was the greatest dance routine ever put on film.
Yes tap in itself takes years to learn and is as much a difficult skill as ballet and those hip hoppers who can spin on their heads. People can learn these things but only certain people can perfect them and invest their whole beings and lives in them, and some elevate their skills to the next level, like The Nicholas Brothers.
An example is, I personally am a trained Tap dancer, that's all you could call me, but the Nicholas Brothers are on a whole other stratosphere, you won't find ANY tapper who does exactly what they do, even now.
In a sense tap is so wide berthing in ability from person to person and country to country that so many styles can come out if it. And you'll never find too many tappers much like the one next to them. Especially those who tap from their soul
Cab was an amazing talent. What an entertainer. The dancing speaks for itself. Top shelf talent on display in this clip. Epic!
Yep - and Cab could dance -ruclips.net/video/E_Qi_MbaOyk/видео.html he stepped aside for these guys.. he was a generous performer, by all accounts...
And the great Cab Calloway! My Dad used to go see him and his band at the Cotton Club in Harlem in the 30’s.
You should check out Ms Lena Horne singing the theme song to this movie, Stormy Weather. Her voice is velvet. Actually, you should check out the entire movie, it has some incredible performances, although it's a bit dated from our eyes.
one of the most astonishing dance performances ever filmed. I get goose bumps every time I watch the Nicolas Brothers leap down those stairs. Oh and Cab Calloway is excellent to.
Props to you for being willing to research or look at up. I encourage you to do more research on acts like the Nicholas brothers, Cab Calloway, Dorothy Dandridge, Sammy Davis, Junior, Ethel, Waters, Louis Armstrong, Hazel Scott. There’s so many from that. In Harlem between 1920 in 1950, which was referred to as the Harlem renaissance. A lot of black folk were moving up from the south to cities like New York and Chicago and bringing with it, jazz, blues, Gospel, tap, bebop, trip, hop, hip hop. Those are our routes and jazz is the only indigenous form of music to the United States and it’s based on African rhythms, and harmonies, but look it up. I really appreciate you.
From back then till now. the world never saw this kind of talent. Because it was the 1940's they did not received what their greatness deserved. Four generations have past and not seen talent like this probably never will
Take your time young man. There is *nothing* more important than learning History. I love to see people research for better understanding and I have to say that you, Twon, are the very first Music Reactor I've seen do it while reacting. :) Thanks.
Most dance routines are practiced countless times before they’re performed, but the legendary Nicholas Brothers could dazzle audiences on the first take. A clip from the movie Stormy Weather (1943)-featuring Cab Calloway and his orchestra performing Jumpin Jive-captures Fayard (1914-2006) and Harold (1921-2000) Nicholas jumping into tap-dancing action to perform an incredible routine that was completely unrehearsed and recorded in one take.
Harold appeared in The Five Heartbeats as their dancing coach.
That dance was several takes, but there were no cutaways, which suggests each take used was perfect!
Loved these guys, saw them often on TV when a boy (63 now), and have since seen clips of them from a few years before; they were barely out of their teens in this performance in Stormy Weather.
My parents met them and had dinner with them. They were nightclub dancers in the 50s and danced around Europe in many of the night clubs and had the opportunity to be on the same tickets as Louie Armstrong and The Nicholas Brothers, The Nicholas Brothers were my dad's favorite dance teams. He had pictures of them performing and also at the dinner table with them. Incredible!!!
Cab Calloway was one of the main bandleaders at the mafia controlled Cotton Club. I urge you to look it up, you'll be amazed at what they had to put up with. Later, when this movie was made (1943), there were just 2 movies made with an all Black cast, QUITE an accomplishment! And, these movies were not shown down South to White audiences. When the beautiful Dorothy Dandridge and lovely Lena Horne appeared in all White movies as singers, that part would be excised from the reels shown in the South. I only mention this because it is an important part of our history. And, so that young people will understand how hard if was to be a Black performer back then. BECAUSE THEY OPENED MINDS AND HEARTS, we have newly minted millionaires, actors, singers, artists who are freely able to ply their craft. The Nicholas Brothers were PHENOMENAL dancers. NO ONE has EVER replicated the dance on the stairs! Cab Calloway was AWESOME. People who keep their minds open to something other than RAP, can see it. Cabela was a band leader, music arranger, actor, singer and fantastic showman. Check him out in the Blues Brothers part 1. And listen to Minnie the Moocher from back in the day and compare it to him doing the same song in The Blues Brothers ( I think he was 68). If you pay attention to the LYRICS in the song, you'll see that the old folk you see crippin around now ( I guess I should speak for myself I'M crippn) are cooler than you thought! HAH!
Cab Calloway was one of the first artists to be known as a scat expert. Took it mainstream.
Check out another old B&W clip, The Lindy Hop from Helzapoppin'. As for this, Fred Astaire called this the best dance sequence ever put on film.
Youve just seen three legends at once, Cab Calloway and the Nicolas brothers.
The Nicholas Brothers been performing since they were children. They can also sing. Check out 'Lucky numbers' they sang and dance. They had to be about 8 and 11 years old
Cab Calloway was the man. Listen to him doing Minnie the Moocher. Keep on, young Gentleman.
Just the height of each step and how they went up (and down) them as if they were nothing is daunting. Let's not even go into the splits!!! Love Cab's voice and his performance on this. The orchestra: fabulous. Love this performance 🔥🔥🔥
Let's just say that Cab Calloway was a favorite of the mob, and he definitely kept on their good side.
Those Nicholas brothers were somethin' else. Elite athletes!
When you went, "Wow" and I'm thinking, "just wait for it..." 😁😁🤣
I remember watching old movies with my Momma when I had to stay home, sick, from school. Fell in love with the music, the fashion and oh my, the dancers! Nicolas Brothers are legendary! Thank you for sharing young man! 😽
🤩 Oh yeah...Nicholas Brothers👍👍👍. . they're my favorite tap dancers of all time. Love seeing them in the ole classic movies.
Amazing fact: The Nicholas Brothers were not formerly trained dancers. They were mostly self taught. Fred Astaire (considered one of the best tap dancers ever) said that this dance number was the best he'd ever seen in any movie.
Entertainment like no other.
You got the bonus package with this clip!! 😂
Won’t see finer than the Nicholas Brothers. Best in the biz.
Cab Calloway- class and style .. a genuine performer.. had a way of making you feel like you’re part of the fun not just watching it.
This era produced absolutely incredible talent.
What would make you think that it didn't hurt to dance the way that the Nicholas Brothers danced? It would have hurt to some extent every single time they performed these extreme dance steps. They were absolutely astonishing! As many times as I've seen this song and dance routine, I'll never get tired of it.
These dudes....are world class athletes! to have the leg strength to get up after that splits down the slide....and not use their hands!
Love this. Cab Calloway was such an entertainer. This is big band/swing music. Its awesome. It gets you moving. You should react to couples swing dancing...bet no one nowadays could do it. Fred Astaire was once quoted as saying this was the best dance routine ever recorded on film. He felt his talent could never even hold a candle to theirs, and he was the most famous dancer in history. The Nicholas Brothers deserve a lot more recognition than they get. And most of all....no slutty stage performance to hide the fact that some entertainers have no talent.
Yeah, these were some BAD BOYS! THE shorter one was in the five heartbeats❤ the Nicholas Brothers
You should check out the 1940's Lindy Hop Dance in "Hellzapoppin" Video. It's another AMAZING/How did they do that? dance video.
Cab Calloway awesome and Nicholas Brothers awesome
The most amazing dancing I’ve ever seen - EVER! So so artistic and beautiful to watch. Such flexibility!!!!! Wonderful
Loved your astonished reaction‼️. Cab Calloway and the Nicholas Bros! Talent to spare. Thanks for doing this and thanks for that million dollar smile of yours❣️
I was lucky to have seen Cab on Broadway in The Pajama Game with y McNair in 1979
Doo Wop was the 50's
Glad you enjoyed it. ❤ I've seen many reactions to this vid but still no one has commented on the shadow play throughout the video.
I had the same thought as it was playing. The use of the shadow to emphasize their motions was brilliant, and you're right, none of the reactors seem to catch it.
A masterpiece! Nuff said. ❤
I hope you find some of Gregory Hines dancing too! He was amazing.
Doo Wop wouldn’t come along for another 10-15 years. This is a fusion between jazz and the big band era where they played swing music in World War II.
Aw dang
I believe Stormy Weather was the very first all black movie to ever be released in mainstream cinemas. I know it was the very first; not sure if that is the record it holds, and I cannot recall when I would have first seen it but it wasn't until I saw The Blues Brothers and realised where I knew Cab Calloway from that I also discovered who the Nicholas Brothers were; though I had heard the name mentioned more than once, and they were the dancers from this movie, kerk
Doing a split is one thing, pulling yourself upright like that is something else. Then doing in multiple times while smiling? Jeez!
All filmed in one take for the film. Crazy!
The cotton club was in Harlem it was a black night club.
This is genius. If everyone could do it, they would be legends as well. No one will ever touch this, ever.
That was a blast! I loved seeing your face during the performance!! It's a classic!!
Best dance routine....EVER!! I saw Cab and his band twice later in his career and he was great.
WOW! This is SO good! Thank God it is on videotape so that future generations might discover Cab and the Nicholas Brothers. I'm wondering how many hamstrings they pulled doing those crazy splits! Probably NONE because they were obviously in GREAT shape and so athletic! I remember seeing them in old movies on TV when I was a kid. And tap dancing is now a lost art. The last one I can remember was Gregory Hines .... back in the 80's I think. He was SO good at it that he and Barishnikov (not sure of the spelling) made a MOVIE together, blending ballet and tap dancing. It was just thrilling to watch BOTH of them -- they were masters of their art/craft.
I know I'm coming late to the video but I always enjoy seeing younger people discover the classics. This was filmed two years before I was born. I grew up with things like this being relatively new and the entertainers were still alive and active and making performances on the early TV programs (all in black and white). The thirty's, forties and fifties are/were full of great entertainment and entertainers and music. Continue your discoveries!
There is a color version of this performance on RUclips. Cap Callaway and the Nicolas Brothers are legendary. My father was a tap dancer and knew these guys. Yes, tap dancing is very difficult, and no one ever repeated or copied this performance -- it is too dangerous.
Here is the thing I don't like when people call the Nicholas Brother's "tap dancers" even though technically they were. To me they are complete dancers. They didn't just do acrobatics or tap; from their head to their toes they danced period. Their arm movements and leg positions were so beautiful almost like a ballet dancer. They to me could have don't any style of dance. They were that proficient. Also they each had their own particular style within the team that fascinated me. They were individual and at the same time one. I will never see a dance team like this for the rest of my life I am convinced. Please do some more reactions to some of their other performances as well...like this one ruclips.net/video/T5k1u_9_L10/видео.html
Cab Calloway was a legend in his day and the Nicolas brothers are still two of the best tap dancers in history
I've been watching many of these reactions to Cab Calloway and the Nicholas Brothers. Most were met with skepticism and an air of disdain, but the final reactions of most, such as this young man, were uplifting and a joy to watch.
Today's young people have unlimited access to a history of pure talent, without the need for CGI, computers, synthesized orchestrations, audio effects or profanity. Music back then transcended the color barriers, and everyone enjoyed it. I only wish they would take time to learn what our parents (in my case) and grandparents grew up with.
Very Talented Legendary Entertainers!.... Cab Calloway started his own Big Band when he was only in his 20's! was well known everywhere! The Nicholas Brothers also were very well known even had their own Chauffeur driven limo! quite a feat for Afro Americans in the 1930's! There is a excellent documentary on their life on RUclips. Glad you are checking out different genres of music young man.!
The cab ..now your in the archives of old school..
This was sometime in the late 40s
Cab one of the greatest this country has ever produced & The nicholas brother one of the greatest dance team's of all time. .The way hip hop has influenced music. &culture Cab did the same 30s 40s
Great!!!!! 💞👍Did you NOTICE the splits on stairs at end,,They protected themselves, W their hand to protect EACH JUMP!!
I had to play your reaction to the stair splits 5 times! I needed that laugh! 😆
I love the reactions for this one. Its just so good. The Nicholas Bros were crazy amazing
I grew up watching this because it was my father’s favorite & it actually played on TV in the 50’s & 60’s. The Nicholas Brothers cannot be matched. There were some great tap dancers in those musicals, but I’ve never seen anything like them. And Cab Calloway & his band were fire. I’m so glad to see you kids finding this.
Man I love your reaction to Greatness the best there was No One Compares To The Nicholas Brothers Cab Calloway check out Minnie the Moocher and more swing jive music. I'm 65 and I've never seen anyone likes them thank you and merry Christmas
I scientifically decalre Cab Calloway is the coolest Aerican who ever lived. You gotta listen to his whole retinue of music.
The best part is that they weren't even winded at the end...how does that work? I love this video...
